To find the bottom of America's economic barrel, you don't have to go very far.

No question, it's not that much of a shock to learn the Bay Area has a soft employment picture. The evidence, after all, is plentiful.

The numbers mentioned in this article are stunning. I knew the tech losses were bad, but wow.

Norm, I am truly sorry to hear of these severe problems. My suggestion for you is to move to FL:

FL’S JOB CREATION GROWS FOR 15th STRAIGHT MONTH
[Also, FL ranks in top 5 states for hi-tech jobs]

And I just posted what I thought might be a thoughtful response to some of the problem. Poorly trained/educated IT personal.

The perfect IT Education? (IT/Nerd Alert)

On a personal note, no race ping today?

at least from an employment perspective, tech is never coming back, the offshoring of jobs guarantees that. US tech companies will do OK, but they will be net dis-employers of americans.

what I do not understand is why the northern CA real estate market seems to be holding up, you would think there would be 30% across the board declines in housing prices, given that these prices were set during the bubble. It does not appear to have happened.

California is such a beautiful state, with so many natural resources. It is a shame that the socialists have managed to do such harm. It is a shame that citizens of this state don't take more pride in California's heritage and excise the radical collectivists from our government.

I wonder when the Real Estate bubble will burst also. Maybe when the techies run out of credit cards and the homes become reposessed?

It is a shame what is happening out there. Plus, CA has such a large economy; what happens out there really has an impact on the numbers for the entire country. I can not imagine taxes going up anymore out there, or spending going up any more, but gosh, that's the only way it ever seems to go there. Also, CA home prices are outrageous!!!!!!!

I am in the East Bay. I got the axe in May. No bites since then. My house and my bike are up for sale. As soon as they sell, I'm gone. And my family has been in California for many generations.

My job moved to Florida, I stayed here. If I got a divorce, it would open up a lot more opportunities for me. But, for now, Im sitting tight and trying to tread water with the rest of my unemployed FRiends.

Our elected officials across the board have done the American people no favors. Especially the demRats, the mutinous SOBs.

Norm, you and your wife should reconsider following your job to FL. No state personal income tax, affordable homes going up in value each day, improved education, low unemploymnet, low property taxes, great weather, etc. There are many good reasons 700+ people permanently relocate to FL each day. And, the state is still beautiful in terms of its environment. Right now there is no other place I'd rather live.

Going soon myself to South Carolina. Wife and I had enough. We are leaving Los Angeles in January. $300,000 for a 1,400 square foot house that we are renting is just silliness. The next door neighbors got $309,000 for a house just this size.

I like to work, but I don't like it so much, that I am going to pull 80 hour weeks in order to buy a house I will be too tired to enjoy. The California dream is over.

The Californians are coming here to Phoenix and building palatial mansion sized warehouse looking things with the revenue from their homes sold in California. I can't even imagine the cooling bill for some of these places.

Whenever I visit SFO, I worry about going into (or even near) recently constructed buildings. It strikes me that the workforce there is so corrupted by drugs and other forms of vicious living that it's a wonder they can make bricks stand one atop the other.

Of course, there are other ways in which the California lifestyle ill-prepares people for the realities of the work world. A lean economy, for instance, requires few Gender-Studies majors.

My wife is close to the end of the road work-wise, but has been with her employer for too many years to leave now. Thanks for the offer. We may end up in Nevada if that state doesn't go nutso taxwise in the next 5 years. Florida is too humid for me and my cats don;t like gators. ;-)

from June 2001 through June 2003, the Bay Area lost about 275,000 private-sector jobs

One thing missing from this article is the picture of a dejected ex-jobholder with a weeks growth of beard, shuffling in line at the Mission Soup Kitchen sobbing "It's all George Bush's fault!".

How on earth did that get left out!

I had someone call on an item that I have for sale. He went on about how awful Bush is, then he hits me up for a deep discount on the price. He could have been curteous and professional and just done business with me, but nooooo...
