SUMMARY: Advocates for transgender rights hailed two developments on Monday that extended nondiscrimination protections for transgender people in Pennsylvania and San Diego.
Advocates for transgender rights hailed two developments on Monday that extended nondiscrimination protections for transgender people in Pennsylvania and San Diego.
In Pennsylvania, Gov. Ed Rendell signed an executive order that bars discrimination among state employees based on "gender identity or expression." Rendell, a Democrat, called the order "an important step for the recognition of personal dignity and freedom."
The San Diego City Council on Monday also added the words "gender identity" to its Human Dignity Ordinance, which bans workplace discrimination. San Diego is now the seventh city or county in California to institute such workplace protections, according to the Human Rights Campaign (HRC).
Pennsylvania is the second state in recent months to expand transgender rights by a governor's executive order. In May, Kentucky Gov. Paul Patton signed an order that prohibits discrimination against gay and transgender state workers.
"This executive order along with yesterday's passage in San Diego of a local nondiscrimination law is another step in our increasingly inevitable march to transgender equality and freedom in the United States," Mara Kiesling, executive director of the National Center for Transgender Equality, told the Gay.com / PlanetOut.com Network.
Kiesling is also co-chair of the Pennsylvania Gender Rights Coalition.
"These important moves echo what millions of Americans already believe, that all people -- including our transgender brothers and sisters -- should be able to go to work without the fear of discrimination," said Seth Kilbourn, HRC's national field director.
This sort of proves that there is hope after all...I think when Jorge went(as an invited guest) to the Bush inaugaration in 2000, it was a road to Damascus experience...I suspect he is fed up...much like many of us.
(not that I can speak for him...though)
GrandMoM, GrandMoM, are you really so slow to catch on?
Just because I'm not a hatefilled homophobic hypocrite doesn't mean I don't know the difference between right and wrong.
Let's not make GrandMoM jealous that I got to attend Bush's inaugaration....while she had to watch it on CNN.
Anyway...my road to Damascus experience was actually more than 30 years ago when I met Christ.
I haven't change my views. And if GrandMoM wasn't so busy assigning positions she feels most comfortable attacking to those who dare disagree with her...she might know where I actually stand.
....excuse me Jorge, you left out a few words!!! he he he
....I attack you Jorge only when you attack me. My frustration with you is trying to understand how someone as smart as you are, and I truely mean that, can be so blind to the homosexual agenda.
I have gay friends, I don't think all gays are in your face about their sexuality or out to hurt our children, but I do think that the majority of gays are .
Twenty years ago gay co-workers (4)went after my two kids and I caught them , I swore then, never to give them another chance with mine or other children and I will fight them to my dying day !
But I'm always nice to you. You must be thinking about somebody else.
My frustration with you is trying to understand how someone as smart as you are, and I truely mean that, can be so blind to the homosexual agenda.
Perhaps I know more about the homosexual agenda than you give me credit for.
I spent more than 5 years arguing with so-called "gay Christians" who are among the worst brand of gay activists around. I know their arguments inside and out. I know their objectives and tactics like the back of my hand.
And I have been called a hate-monger and a homophobe by these people simply because I believe in Biblical moral principles.
But on this board, because I can't agree with the genuine anti-gay nut cases who are about as reasonable as the Taliban...I am labeled as a gay apologist.
In any case..don't worry. I don't lose any sleep about being misunderstood on these boards and neither should you.
