The Apocalypse Is At Hand (...severe vanity)
AnimeNewsNetwork ^ | Monday, August 4th, 2003 | Me, the Depressed; resigned to the bitter fate of humanity....

Posted on 08/03/2003 9:38:35 PM PDT by section9

Well, folks, it looks as if the End is At Hand,

or a Hillary Presidency at the very least.

Yes, It has finally come to pass.

Those of use who are witness to the agony of live action costume contests at anime conventions feared that this might happen.

Live action Sailor Moon.

Ritual suicide is in order. And to think, I was foolish enough to believe that Western Civilization had a chance.....

Gundam, in all variants, is junk.
Gundam is one small step up from DBZ, which in turn is only the smallest bit better than Pokemon.
In most variants, the animation in Gundam is awful, in the oldest it is no better than Speed Racer. The story arcs lack the epic sweep and thematic maturity of Yamato or Macross. The mecha designs are crap. The characters are dull. The episode storylines are lame, lacking the biting wit of Cowboy Bebop or many other series. The overall continuum is moronic.
Why on Earth anyone wastes time with Gundam is beyond me.
Well, that's my $.02 worth, anyway.

Never seen an episode of Sailor Moon.
I get the picture of it, though - from the various Project A-Ko movies.

Speed Racer? You *really* wanna go there?
OK.
Speed Racer is actually Michael Jackson.
Think about it.

Well, at least the live-action Sailor Sisters (if I remember correctly...) are kinda cute. At least in "conventional" clothing (no, that is not a pun).

Oh, well. Just as in the anime, the live-action Sailor Mars and Sailor Venus are the cute ones.

On the other hand, there's some really great anime out at the moment. My four current favorites are:

Uchuu no Stellvia (“Stellvia of Space”) - a Heinleinesque story of young space cadets growing up while doing their part to protect Earth from cosmic disaster. Appealing characters and more-or-less realistic SF story elements make this one a winner.

Gadguard - Not your typical "boy and his robot" show! Gadguard is a most unusual mix, featuring appealing characters, unusual mechanical design, fascinating background work, and the best jazz soundtrack since Bebop. The story pits the Have-Nots of a decadent future Earth against the Haves in a battle for survival. At stake is the remarkable technology known as GAD -- and the lives of the young people who come to control it.

Ashita no Nadja (“Tomorrow's Nadja”) - Like a magical girl show, only with no magic. Nadja Applefield is a thirteen-year-old English orphan in late Victorian times who comes into an inheritance from the missing mother she never knew. Not long after receiving this legacy, the orphanage she lives in is burned to the ground by mysterious men. After a botched attempt at stealing the jeweled brooch she wears, Nadja is forced to flee. Lost and on her own foor the first time, she narrowly escapes a life of sweatshop labor when her luck suddenly changes -- and Nadja joins a troupe of traveling performers as a dancer. The quest to find her missing mother is on -- but will she escape her wicked pusuers? And what is the secret of the brooch? Luscious Miyazaki-like backgrounds, strong animation, and an optimistic storyline make this show fun for lads and lasses of any age.

Saishu Heiki Kanojoh aka SaiKano (“She, The Ultimate Weapon”) - Elegaic. Moving. The kind of anime J.G. Ballard would have creatted if he'd been a Japanese animation director instead of a writer. SaiKano is a love story, the ”Last Love Song on This Little Planet”. In the near future, small-town Japanse high-schoolers Chise and Shuuji fall in love amid a war with an Unamed English-Speaking Country -- a war depicted with frankness and brutality from the point of view of the innocent civilian. As the thunder of the bombs grows ever closer, the forces of war begin to destroy the bond that holds Chise to her first love. Lives are destroyed, secrets are revealed, and when Shuuji learns the frightening truth about his girlfriend, it proves to be more horrifying than anyone could have imagined. As the storyline draws nearer its inexorable end, you'll realize why the translators chose She, The Ultimate Weapon as their official English-language title -- because, after all, in Japanese the word for “death” is pronounced “shi”. SaiKano isn't a story about war; it's a story about love, loss, and the heartache of growing up.

I'd also like to recommend a not-so-new anime to all of you: Kareshi to Kanojoh no Jijoh aka KareKano (“His and Her Circumstances”) - A charming, realistic, and heartfelt tale of childhood's end. High school sophomore Yukino Miyazawa rules the school. She's the idol of the girls and the heartthrob of the boys -- talented, athletic, top of her class, slender, gorgeous, and sweet. But when the she meets the equally-brilliant, devastatingly handsome Souchiiro Arima for the first time, her “perfect girl” image begins to crack, threatening to expose her as the fallible, flawed, and heartbreakingly vulnerable young woman she really is. Produced with humor and style by Gainax, KareKano will draw you into the world of first love, where nothing is certain, least of all happiness. Great music, wonderful family-values messages, and true-to-life teenage drama -- that's KareKano.

All of these ttles are avaible from fansubbers for free with the exception of KareKano, which is a licensed product available for purchase at the linked website. Ganbareyo, Furipaazo!
