Statesman #1: John Adams is way into Asian chicks.

Statesman #2: Asians? Where does he meet them?

James Madison: Oh, he’s never actually seen one. But he's heard descriptions, and they drive him crazy!

If they were assassinating someone in South Korea, I'd say 'be afraid, be very afraid'. If they lose the home court advantage, I'd say it's considerably less of a concern.

Planning, executing, and concealing an assassination of a major U.S. official (and let's not be coy here, the target would be the President) is a feat that is probably not within their abilities. The vast majority of people who take a swing at our top dog are caught and ID'd very quickly. Kennedy is the one glaring exception, of course, but we can assume that whatever organization took him out was one that could function comfortably and quietly in the U.S.

North Korean agents, the real hard core, true believers that they'd have to use, would simply not be able to blend in and vanish in America long enough to become familiar with their new enviroment. Moving through Korean communities in the States would leave a trail and raise suspicion; avoiding them could require years before they're able to function effectively. (as opposed to Islamic fundamentalists, who can essentially hide in the open). Different cultures, different standards.

It is possible that they could pull off the hit, but they'd have almost no chance of escaping undetected afterwards. They're excellent infiltrators; patient, tenacious and daring. Unfortunately for them, they lack the technical, social, and organizational sophistication necessary to act effectively outside of Korea, China, and Japan. (Just my off the cuff assessment.)

The NK's reach is not limited to 3rd world countries, they can operate within the Communist Bloc:

Assassination of South Korean Consul, October 1, 1996: In Vladivostok, Russia, assailants attacked and killed a South Korean consul near his home. No one claimed responsibility, but South Korean authorities believed that the attack was carried out by professionals and that the assailants were North Koreans. North Korean officials denied the country's involvement in the attack.

I don't know. I do think the Iraqis came pretty close to Bush #1 in Kuwait some years back, and I place North Korean at a higher level of sophistication in being able to assemble these deeds overseas and the willingness to carry it out.

This is the ad running for this magazine that one would see in Tokyo or Osaka trains/subways at this time. The first article (on the extreme right), written from top to bottom, right to left, is essentially the same headline about Kim Jong il's reported assassination team being developed to take out senior Americans. (And, apologies for some of the borderline photos here, though. Some FReespers might say, 'no apologies needed' but I realize this is a family forum)

It is obvious he is well loved in his Home Country and that North Koreans do not want the USA meddling in their Utopia.

Riiiight. Just like 100% of the voters in Iraq voted for Sadaam shortly before his "denouement".

100% of Iraq did in fact vote for Saddam.

The scenes you witnessed of people tearing down his statue, spitting on his picture etc. in the middle of Baghdad was produced on a Zionist-controlled sound stage in Hollywood.

It has to be true, I read it on DU.

Iraq attempting to kill Bush Sr in Kuwait would be comperably difficult as it would be for North Korea to try to assasinate GW in South Korea or Japan. The closer you get to the home court, where groups of expats or sympathizers are present, it becomes very feasible for undercover agents to function in small groups. The same goes for Iraq. The hit they planned in Kuwait wouldn't have been possible at Camp David.

Iraqi's in Kuwait, North Korean's in the ROK, they're still in their own hood. This would give the operatives the advantage on the ground, operationally. Politically, they're throwing a grenade at their own feet to win a boxing match.

Just being able to kill him isn't enough. It would have to be done in a way that would bring no suspicion on North Korea. If Bush takes a trip to Seoul and gets whacked, the list of suspects won't be very long. If America believes, rightly or wrongly, that North Korea is to blame, then Kim just shot himself in the head.

This is why I think that GW wouldn't be in any more danger than he is already while CONUS. A clean stateside hit would create a JFK scenario, but I don't think that NK special ops could make this particular hit without showing their own hand. That would be a show stopper, as remaining anonymous would be considered mission success critera. The bar for conducting a major assassination is the same for everyone in the U.S., but the North Koreans start with some major penalties that cripple their chances anywhere but in the Far East.

This course of action would also presume that Kim think's that Cheney is less of a hawk, hence preferable, to GW. It's a huge risk to take for what would appear to be very little in return.

Exaggerated alarmist article.

I anticipate that they just want to sell more copies of the magazine. Check out any store in any country and you will find many articles on UFO, astrology etc. Unfortunately this is what many readers want. How would you otherwise sell evening papers?

What were the high points or low points of that specific ST article? Can you read Japanese? I was wondering if you could get a copy and analyze the points for us. Please provide more details. I was glad to hear (via your post) we could find a FReeper to access a copy of "ST" and digress in detail. Thanks.

Gomen nasai.

I was just referring to this type of articles in general, not this specific article. If it was any substantial information in this issue it would be printed in other newspapers.
