CONGRESSIONAL IMMIGRATION REFORM CAUCUS Rep. Tom Tancredo, Chairman

September 10, 2003 Event Announced

Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-CO) today announced that the Congressional Immigration Reform Caucus will hold a news conference on September 10 to present statements by several victims of the 9-11 terrorist attacks. The victims will tell their personal stories and how the events of September 11, 2001 are related to the nation’s open borders policies.

“The victims of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 in Washington, DC and New York City have a powerful message to share with al Americans,” said Rep. Tancredo, Chairman of the 68-member Congressional Immigration Reform Caucus.

The news conference will be held at 11:00 AM at the US Capitol in Longworth Park, which is adjacent to the Longworth House Office Building.

Other events aimed at spotlighting the victims of open border policies previously scheduled for Sept. 10 will be rescheduled for a later date in order to allow participants to focus exclusively on the 9-11 victims and the issue of terrorism.

Questions about the news conference and the participants may be directed to Rikki Horton in Rep. Tancredo’s office (202-225-7882).

You lucky dog. I wish to high Heaven that I had a representative who would take a stand on illegal immigration.

Can any of you men tell me if you're required to carry the card with you after you've registered with the Selective Service?

My Senator. Go Tancredo Go!

Tancredo I heard is considering a run for the Senate, which could be a steppingstone to the presidency.

Thanks. I'm looking into laws regarding aliens registering with the Selective Service and the benefits (both state and federal) that are denied to those who do not register. The website for Selective Service doesn't mention if the cards must be carried with you, though.

Never even dawned on me about the write in part for President, for some odd reason I kept thinking I had to vote for a specific person on the card. A Republican and an Americans first type of politician. I will keep that in mind come 2004.

I think you mean the vice-presidency. Governors become Presidents.

It's rare that Senators win, Bob Dole was the last nominee from there, but it is possible. If Tancredo goes for it, he's got my vote.

My son registered a few months back, he recieved a 'two-part' card.....one to carry & one to 'safe-guard', I guess...

See if you come up with ANY gov't agencies that are enforcing the law re: ALL aliens, legal & ILLEGAL, must be registered.....or is this just another law that is enforced on CITIZENS ??

Thanks. This is what I have so far (but I'll bet that it is rarely enforced). There's a link at the bottom of my post that tells you what state laws (if any) are in effect in your state. Some benefits, both at the state and federal level, are denied to men who are not registered.

Who Is Required To Register? - Undocumented (illegal) aliens [among others also listed].

Am I required to give my Social Security Number when I register with Selective Service? - If you have a Social Security number, you are required to provide it.  However, you are not required to have a Social Security number to register with Selective Service.

What is the penalty for not registering? - If you do not register, you could be prosecuted and fined up to $250,000 and/or be put in jail for up to five years. Registration is also a requirement to qualify for Federal student aid, job training benefits, and most Federal employment.

What Happens if I Don't Register? - Registration is the law. A man who fails to register may, if prosecuted and convicted, face a fine of up to $250,000 and/or a prison term of up to five years. Even if not tried, a man who fails to register with Selective Service before turning age 26 may find that some doors are permanently closed, such as:

  • Citizenship - The U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) makes registration with Selective Service a condition for U.S. citizenship if the man first arrived in the U.S. before his 26th birthday.).

  • Student Financial Aid - Men, born after December 31, 1959, who aren't registered with Selective Service won't qualify for Federal student loans or grant programs. This includes Pell Grants, College Work Study, Guaranteed Student/Plus Loans, and National Direct Student Loans.

  • Federal Job Training - The Workforce Investment Act (formerly called the Job Training Partnership Act - JTPA) offers programs that can train young men for jobs in auto mechanics and other skills. This program is only open to those men who register with Selective Service. This applies only to men born after December 31, 1959.

  • Federal Jobs - A man must be registered to be eligible for jobs in the Executive Branch of the Federal government and the U.S. Postal Service. This applies only to men born after December 31, 1959.

Some states have added additional penalties for those who fail to register. See State Legislation.

State Legislation [States with laws tied to Selective Service registration.] - States with legislation include Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Delaware, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Northern Mariana Islands, Ohio, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virgin Islands, Virginia,  West Virginia and Wisconsin.
