GOVERNOR BUSTAMONTE AND LEARNING TO DO SIMPLE MATH

Posted on 08/08/2003 2:51:44 PM PDT by Chancellor Palpatine

California registered voters, by party.

To all the mathematics challenged "true conservatives" gleefully carving up the GOP votes with more candidates, please carefully observe the numerical superiority in the number of registered Democrats - nearly 1.5 million - which is augmented by roughly 150,000 green party members.

Also look at the group of 2.3 million unregistered voters - a group which is not historically wedded to the "true conservative" wing of the CaliforniaGOP - a fact borne out in several elections.

If one considers that Cruz Bustamonte is enthusiastically backed by the state apparatus if the majority of the voters go over the threshhold and ashcan Davis (which I'm now in doubt over, since Simon is entering), and considering that there is no credible prominent Democrat opposition to him, then how does it help to carve up the GOP vote by having Simon and McClintock at the same time as Schwarzenegger?

It allows the Demorats to maintain the Governorship while the good ship California goes down with all hands?

(not my desired outcome, go Arnie!)

Best possible outcome would be Bustabudget winning. If a Republican (or Arnie the RINO) wins, he faces a hostile legislature and only has two years 'fore the next election to do anything. Bascially, all he will accomplish is making the Republicans look worse. "Why isn't it fixed already?" the PRK'ers will whine.
Let the People's Republik of Kalifornia go down in flames with a Democrat at the controls. That is the best chance conservatives have. This whole recall was a crummy idea from the start, like starting a mutiny on the Titantic while its sinking.

The California conservatives are being extremely clever. Bear with me here.

The next Governor will be elected with a minority of voter support, will face an impossible task, and will go down in flames in three years, assuming he's not recalled first.

So, you want to get people out to recall the failed Governor Davis, but the only person you really want to win is your worst enemy.

That's Bustamonte. Republicans split their votes and Bustamonte wins a squeaker over Ah-nold.

Interesting California voting data. I haven't done the math myself yet. I better get out my pencil and calculator.

Thanks for the link.

...like starting a mutiny on the Titantic while its sinking.

That is the most excellent analogy I have seen in a very long time!

You're giving them more credit for more smarts than they ever exhibited before - they're not that capable strategically.

Besides, I'm in the camp that says its always better to get the office, and deal with it, warts and all.

I think there's at least the possibility that Ah-nold could do some good. He's a lot smarter than most give him credit for, and he's very keen on cutting the budget.

He has charisma and star power, and I think that's what is needed when it comes to selling Californians on a new political direction. He's probably not super-frugal, but he understands the need to cut the budget deeply so businesses and individuals will stick around.

All in all, I'm inclined to give him a shot. He can't be any worse than "head in the sand Davis", and he could be truly great.

Thoughts?

Anyone notice how the liberal media aren't reporting Arnold's poll numbers?

I was ambivalent about the recall effort from the start (even though I signed a recall petition -- I did so half-heartedly, because Gray Davis is the most corrupt politician in America). My ambivalence stemmed, in part, from the fact that it was like rolling a bomb into a crowded room...you couldn't predict or control where it would go off and who it would take out.

Let's face it: the recall effort was started by a group of conservative Republicans (not all conservative Republican were behind the recall from the start, but those at the start were conservative Republicans). They should have known from the start that while they might have a good chance at taking out Gray Davis, once the recall qualified for the ballot, they couldn't control the end result. I consider it ironic that those who most strongly pushed the whole recall effort are now those who are "disgusted" with the prospect of Arnold Schwartzenegger becoming Governor out of the process. You wanted Davis out? You're going to get Davis out (in and of itself a good thing), but to those who started this process, you can't complain if the end result isn't what you envisioned.

And what has Cruz Bustamante ever done, other than being a political parasite living off the system? I think he lists his occupation as "Government." He was in the Legislature, in fact he was Speaker of the Assembly, and as far as I can tell, sat idly by as California sank further into the abyss. Arnold's entry sealed Gray Davis' fate. And his presence in the campaign may be the only insurance that that little opportunist Bustamante doesn't get in.

If the mutiny was over who had a better idea...1.(Status quo)staying on the boat or, 2.(mutiny)getting some people off...the mutiny is better, yes? Living in Kalifornia I was not too excited over living with 3 more years of incompetence. But...your point is well taken.

These numbers are where the McClintock and Simon theories come up on the rocks. For a conservative to win in California, he needs all Republican votes and a RAT turnout 33 percent below 2002 RAT turnout levels. (In a race this high profile, how can one sit there with a straight face and predict the lowest RAT turnout in history???)

This is why any Republican in CA must draw votes from indies and liberals (RATS) to win. The numbers just don't add up otherwise. I saw a prediction today from a layperson who thought that 62 percent of all votes cast would go to the GOP candidates. They were smoking some good California weed, I guess. With these numbers how can anyone in their right mind think such things?
