Pity. The man looked sick all his life to me. But he sure could tap and he was a pretty good actor as well.

Started out as Hines, Hines, and Dad. Forst saw them on the tonight show with Carson. I liked the guy. Seem to have a winning personality and for years was the number 1 tap dancer.

He was in
White Knights and
Running Scared, that I can remember right off.
Also, he sang a fabulous duet with Luther Vandross, "There's Nothing Better Than Love.
He started in Hines, Hines, and Dad, with his brother and father.

Yes, that's the group. I can sit and watch him dancing with Michael Baryshnikov in White Knights FOREVER.

He was in "White Nights" (1986) with Alexander Baryshnikov and Isabella Rosellini, he was very good as an American expatriate black tap dancer that the Russkies used for propaganda purposes. I'd recommend this film.

Fox is covering this like he was a senior statemen. They've done the "Fox News Alert" four times that I've seen. Annoying.

Sad. Sadder still is watching the Fox News Channel ad-lib the story:
Eric: "He was talented, talented, actor...and a dancer. He started dancing when he was five years old."
Kieran: "Yes, he was a dancer, and an actor. So talented. As Eric said, he started when he was five years old, tap dancing with his brother."
Eric: "Yes, some sad news to report. He was such a talented, talented actor..."
It's as if their sources are on an IV drip. Why not just announce it and then say "We'll have more details on this story for you once we have something further to tell you." Then move on to other topics. Instead we get this tag-team parroting of the same few details over and over and over...

Nureyev was gay and died of AIDS. It's a shame, he was an amazing talent.

he did a ton of movies and TV, including a 2001 starring vehicle as Bill "Bojangles" Robinson. His filmography at IMDB is at:
http://us.imdb.com/Name?Hines,+Gregory
I loved Running Scared with he and Billy Crystal. He also had a neat part in the HBO movie The Cherokee Kid. One of the smaller, wierder and funnier bits was the cameo he did as the roller skater mugged by Miss Piggy in Muppets Take Manhatten. I think he may have been most pleased with Tap, which involved lots of the best black dancers of the 20th century, including Sammy Davis Jr. in one of his last roles.
He was definitely one of the best and will be missed. I thank God that we live in a time when performers like him will be remembered because people will be able to see their work. That's only been possible for 100 years. All of the history of the performing arts before that is merely rumor.

Yes, he always was kinda sickly looking. Hubby is shocked to hear of his passing. People are dying who never died before as my grandma used to say.

Thanks - I don't mean to help in sidetracking the thread, but I think it is unfair to categorize all ballet dancers as gay, especially ones as unquestionably awesome as Barysnikov. I recall it being part of the conversation that he was quite heterosexual. When he dances, he looks like a man.
Same is true for Gregory Hines. He was a great dancer and it is sad to see him stricken down by disease so young.

He played "Bojangles" in the biography film of Bill Robinson. Duplicated Robinson's complicated "dancing up and down the stairs" routine. That was a great movie.
