See the problem, then deal with it
He says our seaports are tighter, making America safer.
He says our borders are more secure following the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, making America safer.
But Robert C. Bonner, commissioner of customs and border protection, admits that the border area between Mexico and Arizona is "the Wild West" and is still is vulnerable to terrorists.
Mr. Bonner, we want you to change that. We hope that you realize that we've heard statements from politicians and bureaucrats in Washington, D.C., and that not much has been done, so far.
We're glad you recognize our nation's vulnerability, but it's time to strengthen the security of our borders. And it's time to show that our nation can control its border.
Illegal immigrants cross the border every day. With that comes the trashing of our lands, the deaths in the desert and the violence of crimes. People are affected by this.
On top of that, no one living in Cochise County wishes harm on the United States. We don't want people walking through our border area who would later do greater harm to our nation.
But that's what we fear is happening.
It's time to press the situation along our border. It's time to make sure illegal immigrants and terrorists alike know that we mean business -- we can control our border and turn you away.
Without such changes, we don't think America is safer. The threat is always there. And living with a threat isn't a way to live.
TOPICS: Crime/Corruption; Editorial; News/Current Events; US: Arizona; War on Terror
KEYWORDS: borderintruders; bordersecurity; cochisecounty; illegalimmigration; immigrantlist; invasion
For the longest time, the Sierra Vista Herald has been on the side of the border intruders. Sierra Vista is located just north of the U.S./Mexico border in Cochise County, Arizona. Because of stronger enforcement on the border in Texas and California, Cochise County has become the primary corridor through which the border invasion is occuring. The Herald has always taken the politically correct position and has sided against those who wish to strengthen our border. The Herald was very negative against congressional candidate Jim Behnke when he ran against RINO Jim Kolbe on a platform of using the military temporarily to seal the border until DHS can get its act together and sufficient border barriers can be erected. The Herald released several editorials against Behnke and his plan.
But, now, read what they have to say. Suddenly they are on the side of sealing the border. I didn't think I'd ever see such a thing. Notice their dig at RINO Kolbe as they say " We hope that you realize that we've heard statements from politicians and bureaucrats in Washington, D.C., and that not much has been done, so far." This on the heels of Kolbe's announcement of his idiotic guest worker scam.

If this had been in Maxine Watters' district, the paper would have done a 360-degree turn.

America needs to wake up to the outrage that's happening right under our noses. Millions stroll across the Mexican border every year, who are they?
That outrage needs to be made clear to George W. Bush. It's too bad that he doesn't care. Maybe the coming election will open his ears a bit.

Thanks for the ping. I hope the liberals are finally starting to "get it". I won't hold my breath.

Because leftist organizations and their media boosters are first and foremost AGAINST everything republicans stand for, it may very well turn out that the recent GOP betrayal on the illegal immigrant issue is the best thing that could've happened.

AGAINST everything republicans stand forUnsecured borders is GWB's soft underbelly. With about 75% of the American people wanting secure borders and illegals out it was only a matter of time before someone on the left figured this one out.

Like the saying goes...a conservative is only a liberal who's been raped. I'm not familiar with this newspaper, but the reason for the 180 may well have been one of their own got really stung by some illegals.

There actually seems to have been some movement toward some of them advocating abolishing NAFTA and WTO and protecting US worker jobs.

Being very suspecious of all things liberal. I would suspect this turn around has to do with an approaching guest worker program, or an amnesty of some sort, that they are privy to.
