I agree with Medved on this one. He points out that the only way Republicans are going to lose is if they keep shooting themselves in the foot. (by demanding only "pure" conservatives and voting for "fringe" candidates.) He said Simon had his shot and needs to pull out. IMHO - it will take a mighty charismatic person with leadership to teach and sway the CA people and rule the dems. And Arnold seems to be the one. But I am not voting, the CA people will have to sort this out for themselves...

Do you have proof that Ahhhhhnold supported Proposition 187? It has been posted here that he opposed it. What is the story? What is the proof?

As Winston Churchhill said: Those who would feed others to the alligator in the hope that they will not be eaten should remember that first or last they WILL be eaten.

Good principle makes good politics. The public does have high regard for: He says what he means and means what he says.

On the contrary, I find his high level of discourse very refreshing.

Medved talks the kind of common sense that Rush Limbaugh used to as recently as a few years ago.

Once again, Arnold can't do much to effect the abortion laws in CA with a 2/3 Dem majority

The average voter doesn't think like that.

There are a huge number of people who understand that millions of children are being slaughtered every year for convenience sake. They can't believe that half of our society is willing to look the other way. They are horrified that politicians run in support of that issue and so few are willing to speak out against it. They crawl over broken glass to find out who the prolife candidates are for everything from dogcatcher to President. They vote for them and leave the rest blank.

There are a whole lot of voters like that. And its the same with the 2nd Amendment and family verses homo issues. Altogether you have a massive conservative voting block in the CA GOP and woe to the candidate who goes against them.

Even among liberals, people look for the candidate who shares their views on the issues that matter.

I love Dubya. I despise Schwarzenkennedy. I don't really know you very well. Where does that rank me?

I'm a Californian. My concern is- Arnold turns out to be a Bloomberg. I want more information before making a decision.

WHEN the budget and deficit are under control, and businesses are thriving, THEN he will pile up the social programs

Oh goody. I can't wait.

That's the problem. Arnold doesn't understand that the piling up of stupid government social programs is what got us into this mess.

I'm going to vote for someone who will get the finances under control and then get to work REDUCING the size of government.

Do you agree? Before answering, ask yourself: "Do I live in California?"

Been in West Los Angeles since 1995; relocated from home state of Oklahoma...
so I'm a pretty radical conservative amongst most of my colleagues out here.

I'll vote for recall and for Arnold.
Personally, I'm ambivalent about the recall. Gray and all his minions in the
state legislature should be pine-tarred with having driven California into
backruptcy court.

But, since that ain't gonna' happen, I think Arnold is the guy with sufficiently
wide constituency that he can nudge the state in the right direction.
Granted, in a sane world, Simon or McClintock should be calling the shots.
But maybe Arnold, with all the advisors he has that worked for former Gov.
Pete Wilson, might be able to get some good things done to save this 800-pound
Gorilla of a state.

I haven't heard his show, so he may have changed since I last listened to him. But when he was subbing for Rush a few years ago, at least twice an hour he would crow about how he was a better parent because he didn't have a YV in his house and how anyone who did have a tv and kids was a bad parent. I got so sick of it I actually had to listen to NPR...I know, I know...but I was working out in the middle of nowhere at the time and those were the only two AM stations I could get.

"...I want more information..."

The election is in October! Californians have lots of time to consider soberly their plight.

No one is voting today.

Schwarzenkennedy can and will support Roe vs. Wade rhetorically, always opt for the most pro-abort regs, and, most importantly, send a delegation of gilt-edged social revolutionary nuts and surrender monkeys as delegations to the GOP national conventions to change the platform. I am very willing for you to experience Governor Davis or Governor Bustamente and have a real victory in 2006 rather than cede Californistan's GOP to the same old bunch of socially leftist wind tunnels with wallets whose treason has harmed your state and party so much.

Fortunately McClintock is on the ballot and will be after Droidboy drops like a stone. Then we shall see, after McClintock gets ahead of Schwarzenkennedy, just how sincere all this RINO yak about conservatives needing to be loyal to the droid to help the party really is. The RINOs will jump ship again but this time enough working Democrats will vote for McClintock to save your state. Then it is up to McClintock to reach out to non-Muffy constituencies.

If I am wrong and either Davis survives (unlikely) or Bustamente wins (more likely), Californistan will be fed up enough to vote as it ought to.

Simon & McClintock "can't get elected?" Says who?... You?... Well then let's just forget about the election altogether and just because some FReeper who shall remain anonymous who goes by "quidnuc" says they can't win we'll just accept your word as gospel and let you decide! what galaxy do you people come from???

He probably doesn't have a chance even if Arnold does drop out. Simon's been rejected by CA voters in favor of Davis, and the stain Davis spread all over him will stick.

#9 just how much do you have to bet on that! I'll take it. I think I'll book mark this article with your opinion so after Arnold is Gov. I can show it back to you.

OK, but be sure and ping me with your humble apologies when my prediction comes true.

If you care to browse the FR archives I predicted this same hting back when Riordan was at over 40% in the polls and Bill Simon was around 4% in the fall of 2001. In the closing weeks of the campaign I was the only one I knew who had the audacity to predict Bill Simon would win by 14 points (the most wildly optimistic conservatives had him wining by 8-10 points)...I was wrong though. He won by 18 points.

I repeat, Simon & McClintock are unelectable!

Neither one can come close to matching Arnild's name recognition and star power, and wonkish policy-speak just isn't going to cut it in this election.

The only thing their candidacies will do is split the GOP vote and make it possible for the Democrats to maybe hold on to the governorship.

In other words they're spoilers, pure and simple.
