Prayer Request for A Tiny Baby (Update in post #12850)
Myself | 8-11-03 | Brad's Gramma

Posted on 08/11/2003 12:57:30 PM PDT by Bradís Gramma

If you will, please remember this tiny baby in your prayers. He’s the grandson of a very dear friend of mine. Logan was born on July 25. His due date was in October, making his mommy 26 weeks along, being born 3 months and 3 days early.

Logan was 1 lb 9.4 oz when he was born and is now weighing, as of this morning, 1 lb. 8.3 oz. The little guy is now 12-1/2” long.

He’s a real trooper and is fighting with all his little body can fight with. His Grandma said that he’s starting to recognize his mommy when she comes in the room and hears her voice. She said he tries so hard to open his eyes, and starts kicking his feet.

I asked my friend if there were any specific prayers, other than the obvious…and this is her reply…” A prayer of thanks for the miracle called "Logan.”

On a personal note, I’ve read the emails daily from my friend. I’ve known her for years, I’ve heard her talking about her family for years…but I’ve got to tell you that I’m SO impressed with how her children have all banded together in support. What an incredibly wonderful and loving family.

Father God, we lift up Logan’s little body to you. We pray that you can strengthen him hourly, daily, weekly, until he’s grown enough to go home with his precious family. We ask for guidance for the doctors and nurses who are caring for him. We ask for strength for his parents and extended family. Thank you so much for the gift of life. In Jesus’ Name, Amen

Fellow Freepers…….I bring you Logan!!!

700 to 10000 grams.

I cannot even comprehend that. There are those of us who just don't know how good we have it, aren't there?

Heavenly Father,

You formed this child in your own perfect image. You knew him as he grew in his mother's womb.

We beg you to look upon him now and give him the strength he needs to live and praise Your name. Look upon his parents and his family, that they may have faith in his recovery, and peace if You should call him home to You. Look upon the doctors and nurses, that they may use their gifts of knowledge to save this beautiful child.

Hang in there, Logan...we're all pulling for you!

700 to 10000 grams

Oops, that was supposed to be 700 to 1,000 grams. I think there were even some babies at 500 grams or slightly lower. We learned to think metric at the hospital. If my math is correct then Logan is at about 750 grams now.

And with the weight gain he is heading in the right direction.

Logan not needing the vent is great to hear! Takes away an infection risk. What a beautiful little guy he is!

Logan's Grandma and I were on the phone tonight, and she told me about this organization...I'm putting this out here in case there's people who like to sew (I do!) who may be interested.

Neither of us are affiliated with it, just for the record. But...if anyone happens to be reading this, who likes to sew...here ya go!

Dear Gramma:

I have a preemie of my own, now almost two years old and healthy as a horse. I remember all too well what those days felt like till my baby came home. Prayers are on the way!!!

A few words for Logan's parents:

1. Visit often and stay as long as possible, even if he is sleeping.

2. Sing to him. Studies have shown that babies are comforted and feel safe and loved when their parents sing to them. I could make dogs howl with my singing, but my children think I'm an opera star.

3. Bring in close-up face shots of mom, dad, and any siblings to tape inside his isolet. Celebrate every day. It's okay to call in the middle of the night to see how Logan is doing; the nurses are happy to give reports.

4. If you have any friends near them, urge the friends to cook them meals, drive them to the hospital, babysit any siblings, tidy up the house, anything so they can focus on Logan. Make sure Mom and Dad are taking care of themselves, too. Also, encourage them to talk about the baby, often, daily. Since there is very little they can do to help Logan right now, even talking about it can relieve the heartache of feeling helpless.

5. Encourage them to get in touch with their insurance company immediately. Unless they have exceptional insurance, the medical bills are going to be whoppers, believe me. Find out immediately what insurance will or won't cover. Get a critical care case manager on the file asap.

6. They shouldn't wait for the bills to start rolling in before calling providers. As soon as they see what insurance will not cover and what the balances are, they should contact the care providers to see if they can absorb the differences or cut the bill. If the bills are still overwhelming, they should file economic hardship papers with the hospital.

My husband and I negotiated down a few bills, bit the bullet, and paid thousands of dollars out of pocket. We are still fighting to pay off the debt. They don't have to fight the same fight we did - there are alternatives to massive debt or gutting nest eggs.

7. Start pumping that breast milk; it's the life's blood for preemies. Easy to digest, builds their immune system. Tell Logan's mom to keep pumping as long as she can.

8. When they touch Logan, they should just rest their hands on him. Stroking is very stimulating to babies, and the excitement is not what they need. They need to rest in these early, critical days. Hands on skin is reassuring, loving, but avoid stroking till he's bigger and stronger.

9. There will be setbacks, sometimes several setbacks. These are not uncommon, but should be monitored closely.

10. If they even think they are coming down with a cold, stay away.

11. They should not beat themselves up with guilt, an all too-typical reaction when things don't go perfectly. People forget how many things go wrong for no apparent reason, how birth is a "miracle" because so much CAN go wrong.

12. Pray, pray, pray. God holds Logan in the palm of His hand.

It's not uncommon for babies to lose weight, particularly preemies. My daughter lost several ounces before she built her weight back up enough to come home.

Still, with one so small, even a fraction of an ounce seems so much.

Prayers!

Thanks for the ping, BG.

This prayer request is extra special for me. One of our grandson's is also named Logan. I have the good fortune to be his caregiver while Mom and Dad are at work. Our Logan's mom was also a premie, though not as early as this young fighter.

My dad used to say, "Ya know, even with these bad knees, they never hurt when I'm kneeling before the Lord in prayer."

Lifting up Logan and his family in prayer.

Prayers sent to heaven to help Logan grow stronger and healthier every day and to live a long and happy life.

I have an email friend, another mom, who had to deliver her last child, her precious daughter, at 27 weeks due to no amniotic fluid left. They waited as long as they could. For so long we all prayed and prayed.

Today my friend sent me some gorgeous recent photos of her little girl, now almost two, today. May Logan grow up to be equally healthy and beautiful.
