Heads UP ... Fraudulent Citibank Account Verification Email

Posted on 08/17/2003 11:37:40 AM PDT by clamper1797

I received a fraudulent email requesting verification of my recently applied for (which I did NOT apply for) Citibank On-line Checking Account. This is the email ...

******************************************

Dear Citibank customer,

We are letting you know, that you, as a Citibank checking account holder, must become acquainted with our new Terms & Conditions and agree to it.

Please, carefully read all the parts of our new Terms & Conditions and post your consent. Otherwise, we will have to suspend your Citibank checking account.

This measure is to prevent misunderstanding between us and our valued customers.

We are sorry for any inconvinience it may cause.

Click here to access our Terms & Conditions page and not allow your Citibank checking account suspension.

****************************************

I called Citibank and the Representative said that the email has been sent to a great many people and that their security services were looking into it

She also said that anyone receiving the email should NOT respond to it ... especially with any personal information

It's a good thing I bank with a wonderful financial institution in Nigeria. All my cash is safe there--and non-taxable!

That's nothing. I recently got one titled "You credit card has been charged for $234.65 " The body said,
Important notice We have just charged your credit card for money laundry service in amount of $234.65 (because you are either child pornography webmaster or deal with dirty money, which require us to layndry them and then send to your checking account). If you feel this transaction was made by our mistake, please press "No". If you confirm this transaction, please press "Yes" and fill in the form below.
Followed by a form where I was to put in my card #, expiration date, and click a "yes" or "no" button. I wonder how many people fall for this kind of crap?

I'm going to be rich beyond my wildest dreams just as soon as I send that nice Nigerian gentleman my bank account number.

That email made me stop and think for just a second. I DID once have a Citibank credit card, but it's long gone. The email looked so real, too.

This is just one of many lines that are clearly not from Citibank.

I also got that email. I knew it was spam, but it used the Citibank logo. It could easily fool someone. I hope they get whoever is doing this.

This is still going on: I just got one. The giveaway is that the link looks like:
http://www.citibank.com@211.239.150.170/login/login.htm">http://www.citibank.com@211.239.150.170/login/login.htm

The first part looks legit, but the stuff after the "@" is where it actually goes. Spam scammers use this all the time to fool people into thinking that they're going to the real site. In this case, the site is registered in South Korea.

My Nigerian friends tell me that those Liberian's are running some kind of scam.

Be careful dealing with them.
