Sir, there is no "lightening up" when you make blanket statements as such. General Lee and many other Confederates were honorable men and women. To disgrace their name is resentful.

BTW, I debate many other neo-Confederates on Free Republic who don't take things nearly as personally as you do. The Civil War happened a long time ago, and nothing we do today can change the fact that the United States of America won.

You bet it's personal - to myself and all patriotic, freedom-loving, God-fearing Americans.

Just as it was unpatriotic in the 1860s, killing U. S. soldiers today is not a patriotic thing to so.

God-fearing -- I'd be willing to grant you.

You're only an American because the United States Government defeated the rebels way back when.

freedom-loving

As President Lincoln observed, people who defend the right to own other people do not deserve freedom themselves. The U.S. victory in the Civil War was an tremendous victory for freedom -- as Ulysses Grant stated, the rebels "fought for one of the worst causes ever."

That would be the same Grant that hired a Confederate General after the war.

What's your point? Are you making the assumption Southerners are less American than those of the North?

He would have looked good in brown, if he had been born in a certain European country...

Indeed. And he would have probably opted for red had he lived here about 225 years ago.

You're right. I'll never be convinced that killing U. S. soldiers is a good idea.

I expect you'll keep that in mind the next time another General Sherman comes along. You can even offer him your assistance by torching your house in advance. That way he will have more matches to use on others who are less willing than yourself to bow down to and worship at the feet of tyrants.

"The ostensible supporters of [all governments] are made up of three classes, viz.: 1. Knaves, a numerous and active class, who see in the government an instrument which they can use for their own aggrandizement or wealth. 2. Dupes -- a large class, no doubt -- each of whom, because he is allowed one voice out of millions in deciding what he may do with his own person and his own property, and because he is permitted to have the same voice in robbing, enslaving, and murdering others, that others have in robbing, enslaving, and murdering himself, is stupid enough to imagine that he is a "free man," a "sovereign"; that this is "a free government"; "a government of equal rights," "the best government on earth," and such like absurdities. 3. A class who have some appreciation of the evils of government, but either do not see how to get rid of them, or do not choose to so far sacrifice their private interests as to give themselves seriously and earnestly to the work of making a change." - Lysander Spooner, 1870

What do you expect from a nut and a drunk? Anyways, I know that is not nice to say, but tell me, since the South were all Democrats in those days ( as you vehemently express yourself, and since you equate them to the Democrats of today on your numerous posts ), why do 90 % of the blacks vote for Democrats to this very day at every chance they get since the civil war my Republican savior?

Robert Lee's reputation owes much to the fact, as events in Iraq now show, that many people think that there is nothing really wrong in terms of character and action with killing U.S. soldiers.

Wrong. General Lee was a man of the highest character as the testimony of his compatriots, enemies, and an abolitionist. This type of post is exactly what I am referring to; no one can look back at his life and find anything to really condemn him with. No, we must defer to cheapshots.

But if you would like we can compare his actions and deeds to any Federal Officer of that time, as well as their superiors in the administration, and their silent consent to murder, rape, and looting of the civilian population in certain States.

GOP cannot win the debate about the legality of secession so he has to resort to cheap, baseless rhetoric. The contemporary writings by Lee's opponents, written during and after the war, do not support his garbage.

Southerners would not be Americans if the United States had not won the Civil War.

President Grant did so after Longstreet snapped out of his rebellious stupor and joined the Republican Party.
