SAVAGE'S SURPRISE SHIFT TO WOR

August 20, 2003 -- CONTROVERSIAL talk show host Michael Savage suddenly returned to New York radio last night, six weeks after he was canceled by WABC and fired by MSNBC.

The blustery ultra-conservative, who was canned by MSNBC for calling a viewer a "sodomite" who "should only get AIDS and die," stunned listeners and industry observers by making his comeback on the formerly subdued - but increasingly rowdy - WOR (710 AM).

This will definitely cut into WABC's listeners; I for one am glad Savage is back in town.

I can remember listening to WOR late night when I was a kid, back in the fifties, Listened to Long Jon Nebel, one of the earliest using the talk show format. He talked about UFOs, deros and teros, etc. Sort of an early Art Bell, I guess. WOR put in a fairly strong and fairly reliable signal to Savannah, Georgia back then. Guess 50,000 watts does kinda burn through the QRN.

I lived in southern Maine as a kid and I'd take my Silvertone radio under the covers with me at night to listen to Long John's show. Generally the nighttime reception was ok although sometimes I'd have to wrap the antenna wire around my hand to improve the pickup. It's a wonder I didn't end up electrocuted.

Wasn't Bob Grant on WOR?

He's quite the "little ray of sunshine" too! lol

Ditto: Monica at 6pm, then Savage at 8pm. My major daily stress point will be whether or not I leave Monica at 8, or join Savage at 9pm.

Nice to have an alternative to WABC........

Bob Grant has curbed his vitriol towards the callers, has outstanding guest interviews, and now SAVAGE!!

YYYYYYAAAAAAAYYYYYYYY

Does your post relate to the thread in any way, shape or form?

Glad to see Savage back on the air.

Anybody know what happened to Tom Maher (sp?), who used to be on at 7 on WOR, or Mark Levin, who used to be on at 7 on WABC?

Monica's too far out there for serious conversation. She uses lots of material from Batchelor & Alexander which is conspiratorial in the extreme.

They all sound like Art Bell wannabes at times.

PS, I find myself listening to Rush less and less, I get annoyed with his endless sports stuff, and my political intellect has matured over the years -- sometimes he has to catch up with me. What I do appreciate, however, is his analysis on the antics of the DC Pols, which I think he gets after being primed by his insider buddies in DC and elsewhere. PPS, I really like the Scarborough Country show, and look forward to seeing it.

Setting aside the matter of their styles, they are the two most literate of the talk show hosts out there. And Grant's knowledge of history is encyclopedic.

Anybody know what happened to...Mark Levin

I've been wondering myself. 'Dr. Levin' called Sean yesterday, so he's OK, but beyond that, I don't know.

I glad Savage is back in town if Mark isn't on, but I hope Mark at least gets his Sunday show back.

I wonder if his fooling with some of Seans less bright listeners who didn't know they were listening to tape delay didn't get him in too much trouble with the brass. ;-)

I have grown to really love Monica--her style is great. She has learned a lot from the MahaRushie. I also would like to hear more of Mark Levin.

My dream, however, is a half-hour television show on FoxNews with Laura Ingraham, Ann Coulter and Monica Crowley. Each night they would bring in a lone liberal and beat the crap out of him or her! LOL!!

The show could be called "Blondes" or you freepers could prolly think of something more creative...

This is big news on the New York talk radio front. Michael Savage was the one guy who seemed to fit well into that time slot on WABC, and now he's on a competing station.

I don't know what the ratings have been, but it would seem to me that WABC has a lot of work to do in that 6-10 PM period. None of the people they've had on the air since Savage has generated much excitement as far as I'm concerned. Mark Levin is great, but he seems to be tailor-made for a show that airs once a week. Monica Crowley is the most overrated radio host I've ever heard. Even Malzburg and Bey were so tiresome that I couldn't listen to them -- they were off the air for several weeks before I knew they were off the air.

No one does a better interview than Grant. His knowledge is encyclopoedic....as you say.......and he does his homework when he has a guest.

I learn more from 15 minutes listening to Grant than all the ranting for 3 hrs. of Sean.

I listened to Savage last night. He had Falwell on and did a great interview. He has definitely curbed his 'insane man' act. Hopefully he will remain cogent and not ruin this opportunity.

They are now touting a new lineup for fist week in Sept. We shall see!

You are so right about Monica Crowley.....over-rated.

Malzberg is on overnight and is over-wrought, paranoid in thinking he's in danger every moment of every day.....whine whine whine.

As for Sean....by now everyone of us could do his show....same old same old rant day in and day out. No homework at all.

As Rush has been saying, his show seems to be show prep for all that follows....and I think he means Sean.

Yeah, I was thinking that he might be the day he was duping Sean's callers. I miss the show, I used to almost pee my pants when he hit the callers with his intro questions like "Sodomy, yes or no?!?".

It's interesting to note that Savage's real name is Michael Weiner. I've often said that he never should have changed his name -- if he had written a book called The Weiner Nation, it would have been a best-seller for decades. LOL.

Malzberg was at his best when he was on Saturday and Sunday nights. He would simply discuss the week's news from his perspective, often adding an interesting angle that hadn't come up during the week. He would also have interesting interviews with people who you never heard on "regular" weekday talk shows.

I still laugh whenever I think of that promo WABC used to run, in which "Bob Grant" (it's actually Brian Whitman) rants about Sean Hannity -- "Hannity this, Hannity that -- I dee-SPIZE that name!!")

I get that same impression from Monica, she always seems all to willing to give in to the nanny state as it's a Republican nanny. When it comes to legitimate roles for the federal government such as national defence, I have no problem, but I think she goes too far. I wouldn't want to be in a tough spot with her, I think she would fall apart. That said, she is a smart partisan fighter.

Monica Crowley has one of the worst on-air personas I've ever heard on the radio. If she were a liberal talk show host instead of a conservative one, she'd sound exactly like Hillary Clinton.

Malzberg has a sunday morning radio show........he just loves the lefties he interviews. He's always praising Corzine (puke) and loves the dem congresscritters from NY........(ugh)

As for Monica.......she seems to think a PHD in History makes her an expert on all things military.....I have to laugh.

Did you know her sister married Alan Colmes......so I gather the family is only nominally republican. Certainly Batchelor & Alexander, where she got her start are way over on the left.
