As I understand Calif. election law, when the office of Lt. Gov. becomes vacant for any reason, it is then the right of the Govrnor to nominate a new person for the job, subject to legislative confirmation. If Governor Schwarzenegger nominates Tom McClintock to become Lt. Gov, the legislature would cover itself in embarrassment to say no to the man with the mandate.

Think President Ford's nomination of Rockefeller to become Vice President. Many Republicans had doubts about Rockefeller, and many Democrats didn't want him. Still, it is the sort of situation in which the President ought to get his own choice in that office serving under him. The same logic refers to a Governor choosing a new Lt. Gov. who will serve with him, and replace him if it ever becomes necessary.

If this happens with S and McC, I'll reveal how I knew it was under consideration, but not until then.

Not going to happen.

The **California** legislature would never confirm. We've had multiple statewide offices left vacant for years, due to the Rats' refusal to confirm GOP nominees. State Treasurer, Sec. of State, Supt of Public Instruction. They confirmed Matt Fong to be on the Boad of Equalization only as a result of his mother's insistence (mother was a prominent statewide Democrate officeholder).

That is the whole point, McClintock can't win because most outside of a small conservative base have even heard of him.

McClintock is the invisible man in this race and a vote for the unelectable is a vote for the Democrat Bustamante.

FreeRepublic was a great place, then they got all involved in politics.

Next thing you know they'll be havin' product placements and corporate endorsements on there..

By the by, if you all do happen to get product placements and endorsements, I wouldn't turn down any reasonable reimbursements for, you know, suggesting it...

Right on. These hard-liners will consistently shoot themselves in the foot...and I hope they will, therefore, get used to the State government in the total control of the Democrats for the forseeable future.

The zealots on both sides of the aisle are destined for the dustbin. Just look at Gingrich !! We never seem to learn from our all too avoidable mistakes.

The office of Lieutenant Governor does not become vacant. The Lieutenant Governor becomes "acting governor" just as he does when the governor is out of state. When the governor is elected, the governorship is filled and the "acting governor" reverts to Lieutenant Governor.

The scenario you suggest may be under consideration (I am not questioning your personal integrity but that of Wilson and the scum running Arnold's campaign) by Arnold's camp to persuade actual Republicans to stomach Arnold on the false premise that he will promote McClintock. McClintock will be finished politically if he trades his integrity for any mess of pottage from Arnold even a ranking bureaucratic post.

This is all academic because Arnold isn't going to be governor in any event.

Just look at Gingrich !!

You mean Speaker of the House, Newt Gingrich? And how many years was Mr. RINO, Bob Michel, Speaker?

Last time I checked the US House of Representatives is still GOP ever since the 1994 election despite all he defeatist hemming and hawing about how they had better moderate because the US is just tooooooo liberal to elect a GOP Congress.

Seeing CA is just about washed it's hands (and feet) of Davis, there is a very real chance to replace him with someone more revolting - Bustamante.

Although I'm an Objectivist, I wouldn't vote for Leonard Peikoff if he were running for gov of CA. Why? Simple - any vote other than for Arnold supports Cruz.

Ayn Rand said you can indeed vote for the lesser of two evils.

Tom doesn't stand a snowball's chance. If you've got to find a principled stand on something, find a better effort than one that will lead to Bustamante. Join a think tank. Write exposes on CA government waste. Protest a Hollywood elitist. Whatever. Just don't contribute to the Cruz effots - please!

My thinking exactly!

Mary Carey has a great deficit reduction plan to be implemented as soon as she gets into the Gov's Mansion. At $200 a pop, she need only service 1.8 Billion Californians to erase the deficit.

Go, Girl !! McClintock can't top this plan for creative deficit reduction. I am in line, but want a "judicial discount". *S*

Cheers !! Happy voting (twice !!

I like your style but not your choice of candidates. Real Republicans will not empower RINOs with jobs and contracts or give to Wilson any say whatsoever in party or government ever again. They will NOT vote for Arnold. The Demonrats WILL get all the blame they deserve and the GOP will return to primaries as usual to choose the next officeholders in 2006.

Ummm, If you clicked on my name you would have learned I do not live in California, so I can't vote there.

Therefore I still will not vote for McClintock.

Bustamante will not "move up" to become Governor. If the voters vote by a majority to remove Davis, at the very instant the Secretary of State certifies that result, whoever holds a plurality in the race to replace him becomes the new Governor.

There is no gap in which Bustamante "becomes" Governor. Davis remains Governor until that precise moment. Bustamante's only chance to "become" Governor depends on his winning that election. (I discount to zero the possibility that Davis will resign under any circumstances. He has the same all-consuming ego as Clinton -- who also should have resigned, but did not.)

It is a logical tactic for all the Republican candidates to demand that Bustamante put his money where his mouth is. If Davis is rejected on the recall vote, and Bustamante does not win the replacement election, then the whole Davis-Bustamante regime will be repudiated. (It is the same tactic as demanding that Lyndon Johnson or Joseph Lieberman resign from their Senate races as they were running for President and Vice President in their respective years.)

Assume that Bustamante does not resign. It is in the power of the new Governor to assign him an office in the men's john with no phone and no fax. Then, that Governor can assign any other person to undertake the advisory and ceremonial offices that would otherwise belong to the Lt. Gov. Are you with me so far?

McClintock's only possibility of becoming Governor, given the present electorate and habits of voting in California, is if he becomes second-in-command to Schwarzenegger. Absent that, McC has no chance at that office. So, the agreement I describe makes sense both for Schwarzenegger and for McClintock.

That does not mean it will happen, only that it is both logical and possible.

Having volunteered for the GOP in elections every two years since 1984, I cannot remember one time I convinced anyone to back my candidate of choice through condescension, sharp words, and a nasty disposition.

I understand and respect that, but we need to turn the state around from its current downward financial spiral first and foremost. Only Arnold and Tom are going there, and only Arnold has a chance of arriving.
