Has anyone posted the rules on removing oneself from the recall ballot? I wonder how much more time Tom has before he cannot bow out of his doomed campaign?

Ads cost money. McClintock doesn't have any.

Right. The TV stations are going to let him run them for free. He may not have as much as other candidates, but just pouring money into ads means nothing if you don't put the content into them. Simon learned that the hard way.

He doesn't have much time to raise it. And he doesn't have a lot of time left for those ads to be effective.

Funny, Arnold doesn't seem bothered by the short amount of time.

The window is slamming shut on his campaign.

And you're happy to help with the slamming, from the sounds of it.

Given this reality, McClintock's run reminds me of the great pastime that has done more to get Democrats elected and conservatives shut out in this state than anything else: the vanity candidacy.

This is the argument that, above all others, makes you anti-McClintock types look completely stupid. You're carrying water for an actor with, at best, some history of involvement in the political process and you have the gall to describe a man who's actually working to stop the Democrat fascism from spreading in California a vanity candidate? Just how much are dues in the Flat Earth Society, anyway?

Conservative candidates in California have a penchant for beating each other to pieces in the primary phase

Did you have to put down your club to type that?

It also may run FR and JimRob in violation of Campaign Finance Reform regulations

Is that a threat? Just how low will you Ahnold supporters stoop?

It appears that a vast number of people posting to FR, don't really understand politics at all and yes, sometimes JR falls into that catagory. Yet, he HAS , on many occassions, preached the pragmatic way.So, I have no idea, at all, what's up with his newest statement.

Tom has absolutely NO chance, none whatsoever, of winning this thing. Splintering the GOP vote ensures a Cruz win. This is THE most simple political idea, ever known to mankind. A spoiler is a spoiler is a damned SPOILER and dog in the manger voters, no matter which party they claim to belong to, what political side they're on, are the bane of those who actually understand poltics.

FR is back to having a lot of the very vocal no glass people, as opposed to the 1/2 full/1/2 empty types. And sticking with their so called " principles " is going to get them, as always, exactly what they do NOT want ...Cruz B. as ggovernor.

Someone posted snidely, that Conservatives don't have a " herd mentality ". I beg to differ. Some so called Conservatives here, have exactly that. They'd rather lose, than win with a little and build upon the win.

Right. The TV stations are going to let him run them for free.

Would you mind telling me what planet you live on?

He may not have as much as other candidates, but just pouring money into ads means nothing if you don't put the content into them. Simon learned that the hard way.

Funny, Arnold doesn't seem bothered by the short amount of time.

That's because he doesn't have to raise a lot of money in a short amount of time.

The window is slamming shut on his campaign.

And you're happy to help with the slamming, from the sounds of it.

I don't control the clock. I don't control McClintock's bank account. I have yet to hear a practical plan for getting McClintock a plurality of the vote in less than five weeks. Instead, I hear complaints of how I'm controlling the clock and McClintock's bank account.

Given this reality, McClintock's run reminds me of the great pastime that has done more to get Democrats elected and conservatives shut out in this state than anything else: the vanity candidacy.

This is the argument that, above all others, makes you anti-McClintock types look completely stupid.

It's not an argument, it's just an opinion formed from watching vanity candidacies on the conervative side of the house.

I actually asked one vanity candidate to step aside for a guy he agreed with, rather than split the vote and make the November election a race between a true RINO (who only put an "R" after his name because he couldn't spell "D") and a leftist extremist who made Ho Chi Minh look like Barry Goldwater.

His response: "Look, I don't care if (prominent leftist nutball) wins the general election. This primary is all about me and my self-discovery, not about winning an election six months from now."

Yes, even conservatives can drink the nutball "human potential movement" Kool-Aid out here.

Unlike you, I've had some experience dealing

You're carrying water for an actor with, at best, some history of involvement in the political process and you have the gall to describe a man who's actually working to stop the Democrat fascism from spreading in California a vanity candidate?

You realize that you just described Ronald Reagan circa 1966 to a tee?

Considering how much McClintock's actually accomplished (not much) and the very low odds of getting elected...yeah, my take is that he's a vanity candidate.

Just how much are dues in the Flat Earth Society, anyway?

I wouldn't know--why don't you tell me? You're the one saying that a no money, no name, no win candidate (when he brags about having lost by the narrowest margin in 2002, that's damning himself with faint praise) has a better chance of winning.

However, you still haven't outlined a real plan for getting McClintock from "Isn't he that guy who lost for some minor office" or "Tom who?" to a pluraity of the vote on October 7th.

McClintock would take his office as Lt. Gov. ad hoc...

Isn't Lt. Gov. an office with no function, one of those warm bucket of spit jobs? It would be fairly ackward, I would think, to be only an ad hoc appointee as part of a "corrupt bargain" in a useless job anyway.

As I understand Calif. election law, when the office of Lt. Gov. becomes vacant for any reason, it is then the right of the Govrnor to nominate a new person for the job, subject to legislative confirmation. If Governor Schwarzenegger nominates Tom McClintock to become Lt. Gov, the legislature would cover itself in embarrassment to say no to the man with the mandate.

Think President Ford's nomination of Rockefeller to become Vice President. Many Republicans had doubts about Rockefeller, and many Democrats didn't want him. Still, it is the sort of situation in which the President ought to get his own choice in that office serving under him. The same logic refers to a Governor choosing a new Lt. Gov. who will serve with him, and replace him if it ever becomes necessary.

If this happens with S and McC, I'll reveal how I knew it was under consideration, but not until then.

Not going to happen.

The **California** legislature would never confirm. We've had multiple statewide offices left vacant for years, due to the Rats' refusal to confirm GOP nominees. State Treasurer, Sec. of State, Supt of Public Instruction. They confirmed Matt Fong to be on the Boad of Equalization only as a result of his mother's insistence (mother was a prominent statewide Democrate officeholder).

That is the whole point, McClintock can't win because most outside of a small conservative base have even heard of him.

McClintock is the invisible man in this race and a vote for the unelectable is a vote for the Democrat Bustamante.

The office of Lieutenant Governor does not become vacant. The Lieutenant Governor becomes "acting governor" just as he does when the governor is out of state. When the governor is elected, the governorship is filled and the "acting governor" reverts to Lieutenant Governor.

The scenario you suggest may be under consideration (I am not questioning your personal integrity but that of Wilson and the scum running Arnold's campaign) by Arnold's camp to persuade actual Republicans to stomach Arnold on the false premise that he will promote McClintock. McClintock will be finished politically if he trades his integrity for any mess of pottage from Arnold even a ranking bureaucratic post.

This is all academic because Arnold isn't going to be governor in any event.

Seeing CA is just about washed it's hands (and feet) of Davis, there is a very real chance to replace him with someone more revolting - Bustamante.

Although I'm an Objectivist, I wouldn't vote for Leonard Peikoff if he were running for gov of CA. Why? Simple - any vote other than for Arnold supports Cruz.

Ayn Rand said you can indeed vote for the lesser of two evils.

Tom doesn't stand a snowball's chance. If you've got to find a principled stand on something, find a better effort than one that will lead to Bustamante. Join a think tank. Write exposes on CA government waste. Protest a Hollywood elitist. Whatever. Just don't contribute to the Cruz effots - please!

My thinking exactly!

Mary Carey has a great deficit reduction plan to be implemented as soon as she gets into the Gov's Mansion. At $200 a pop, she need only service 1.8 Billion Californians to erase the deficit.

Go, Girl !! McClintock can't top this plan for creative deficit reduction. I am in line, but want a "judicial discount". *S*

Cheers !! Happy voting (twice !!

I like your style but not your choice of candidates. Real Republicans will not empower RINOs with jobs and contracts or give to Wilson any say whatsoever in party or government ever again. They will NOT vote for Arnold. The Demonrats WILL get all the blame they deserve and the GOP will return to primaries as usual to choose the next officeholders in 2006.

Bustamante will not "move up" to become Governor. If the voters vote by a majority to remove Davis, at the very instant the Secretary of State certifies that result, whoever holds a plurality in the race to replace him becomes the new Governor.

There is no gap in which Bustamante "becomes" Governor. Davis remains Governor until that precise moment. Bustamante's only chance to "become" Governor depends on his winning that election. (I discount to zero the possibility that Davis will resign under any circumstances. He has the same all-consuming ego as Clinton -- who also should have resigned, but did not.)

It is a logical tactic for all the Republican candidates to demand that Bustamante put his money where his mouth is. If Davis is rejected on the recall vote, and Bustamante does not win the replacement election, then the whole Davis-Bustamante regime will be repudiated. (It is the same tactic as demanding that Lyndon Johnson or Joseph Lieberman resign from their Senate races as they were running for President and Vice President in their respective years.)

Assume that Bustamante does not resign. It is in the power of the new Governor to assign him an office in the men's john with no phone and no fax. Then, that Governor can assign any other person to undertake the advisory and ceremonial offices that would otherwise belong to the Lt. Gov. Are you with me so far?

McClintock's only possibility of becoming Governor, given the present electorate and habits of voting in California, is if he becomes second-in-command to Schwarzenegger. Absent that, McC has no chance at that office. So, the agreement I describe makes sense both for Schwarzenegger and for McClintock.

That does not mean it will happen, only that it is both logical and possible.

Billybob / John
