I am sure Arnold knew this was going to come out and already has a plan in place to deal with it.
Fact is, I vaguely remember reading this article when it was first published.
If I am not mistaken, there was even a "Little Annie Fanny" cartoon spoof of him back then too.

To: journey7873
Most of the text cannot be published in the media, because it is so explicit. However, the only really damaging thing in the text is the part about using drugs. Other than that, he was candid about a good sex life. So what? Nobody had to buy the magazine - and he wasn't getting laid in the oval office while on the taxpayers' payroll.
To: journey7873
I also question the labeling of it as a "dirty" campaign trick.
Making unproven accusations or starting whispering campaigns based purely on speculation -- stuff like that is dirty campaign stuff. Or when some people tried to make an issue about the race of Phil Gramm's wife.
But what's so "dirty" about calling to everyone's attention an interview that Ahh-nald gave to a magazine? I mean, what did he expect when he started running?

My morals are alot different now than they were in 1977.
However, I did not do some of the things he refers to.
If I did, I'm sure I would have used the exerience as a learning tool.

I think that his exploits may win him votes in urban communities where his life back then sounds like rap songs today. Maybe Bustamante won't get as many minority votes as he thinks.
To: gdani
What's dirty about it is the insinuation that he's unfit to serve as Governor. That somehow this makes him incapable of the job. It's using people's prejudices and emotions to get them to make a knee-jerk reaction, which, as a poster here recently pointed out, is defined as demagoguery.
To: prarie earth
When arnold 1st became popular ... moreover about his body building fame --- I watched him in an interview say how much he appreciates the homosexuals who like his body !
Never liked him very much after that but I had been hoping he would turn out to be another Ronald Reagan ... hardly seems possible now --- I' m always the optimist - idealist until reality relentlessly takes over !

Drudge is just a hack journalist [sic] who has no class. It's obvious he's no Arnold fan and will dig up the dirt on him for the Dems. I wonder if he's on their payroll. What is the point of bringing up something Arnold said 26 years ago? People change. They grow up, get married, have children. I'd be curious to know how many FReepers lifestyles and views have changed somewhat in the last two decades or so. I'd guess more have than haven't.

California-- home of Cheech and Chong-- will be thoroughly outraged by his use of weed and hash.

To: journey7873
This whole thing seems... fishy. I mean, the interview was awfully descriptive for a guy who wasn't fluent in English for years into the 80's...
To be honest, I really don't care about this revelation. Does anyone expect someone living in his lifestyle to have an innocent history? Not that I am condoning it, but I could give two figs for this (or Bush's drug/alchohol past). I am voting for these candidates today, not 20 years ago. If this all happened in 1997 I would be much more concerned...

That's kind of a half truth there FC. His "appreciation" of the homosexuals who liked his body (by his own explanation) was because they were buying magazines he was appearing in, which was driving up sales, which in turn was driving up his appearance fee.
Most smart business men appreciate people that make them money.

It is slander to use such fodder in a manner as if it still has relevance today. If you think that such a disingeuous ploy to disparage the man isn't a slanderous I'm sure that your fine with the people whom tried to take advantage of GWB past indiscretions in which he to has admitted to and atoned for.

What's dirty about it is the insinuation that he's unfit to serve as Governor. That somehow this makes him incapable of the job. It's not dirty. He did these things. He publicly talked about them. It is perfectly legitimate to question his fitness for office based on this behavior. I clearly recall Bill Clinton getting a lot of heat for his drug use. Many candidates have been disqualified in the minds of the voters because of drugs and "immoral" behavior.
In California, I doubt that admitted marijuana usage (a long time ago) and a vigorous sex drive (in an unmarried man) will be seen as disqualifying. The language is what may put people off.
It may be ugly to watch, but it isn't dirty. Sometimes the truth can be painful.
