Yes, I do realize it. You do realize that I was illustrating the way someone who is not guilty of the crime would respond, don't you?
Mine were born in the 1920's
You have the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s down but you left out the current 00s
In the 00s the debt still gets larger and larger, Schools get worse and worse and all the other problems created/exacerbated by the boomers still doesnt even get attempted to be fixed and are continued to be passed on to the next generations. Beyond that the baby boomers have aged and are starting to realize their own mortality, they can no longer eat, drink and play like they used to. In other words they are too old to enjoy the fun stuff they used to and being as self absorbed and self righteous that they are they are now out to make sure nobody else does either hence the rise of the current form of tyranny The Health/safety Nazi nanny state. The Boomers cant eat all the fatty foods they use to so because their cholesterol levels are too high so now we must have the War on fat which includes things like the banning of Oreo cookies and lawsuits against McDonalds, Boomers are too old to hang out in bars so in order to make everybodys life miserable they push to ban smoking.
I had my own rant here comparing the legacy of the baby boomers vs Gen-X, I think it bears repeating
Compare the Legacy
Spawned a new era in the history of mankind: The Information Age
Fighting and will win the war on Terrorism.
Voted in a Republican Majority*
Will somehow pay off the bills the Baby Boomers stuck them with.
The Baby Boomers
The ACLU, Activist Judges, Junk Science, Tune in, Turn on and drop out, Health/Safety Nazis, RINOS, Destruction of the Nuclear Family, Destruction of the Black Extended family, Frivolous lawsuits, The Constitution as a living document, The Welfare State, The Nanny State, If it feels good do it, Smoking bans in bars and restaurants, The Liberal Media elite, The founding fathers were nothing more than evil slave owners, Sound bites over substance or facts, Its for the Children, Abortion on demand, NIMBY, The Clintons, Seatbelt laws, Feminism, Tree Huggers, Criminals that have more rights than the victim, Taking time off to find your self, Meathead, Blame America First, Latch key kids, Kids being raised by their grandparents and/or strangers, Helmet laws for Motorcycles, Helmet laws for freaking Bicycles, Cradle to grave entitlements, War on Fat, 21 year old drinking age, Yuppies, Careers over your children, Limousine Liberals, Keeping up with the Joneses, Hatred of the Military, Time Out discipline, Reporters who think they are not only part of but bigger than the story they are covering, Focus groups, Weekend dads, Single moms, Prisoner rights groups, Prozac, Ritilin, Viagra, ½ our income going for taxes, America owes me, Living past failed dreams through your children, Even though the WWII generation saved the world from fascism and tyranny they are still uneducated simpletons, Cocktail Parties with the likes of Mike Bloomberg, Turning an educational system that once was the best in the world to S!@, The 2nd Amendment doesn't mean the Right to bear arms, Do as I say not as I do, Peacekeepers instead of soldiers, The weakening of the CIA, Power Couples, Soccer Moms, NPR, Eradication of Dodge Ball, It's all society's fault type excuses and made up syndromes instead of personal responsibility, and so many more but I will close with.
And an Obscene $6,000,000,000,000+ and still growing national debt that WE the future generations will have to pay off.
* Yes we did vote in a Republican majority in Congress, Senate and White House but unfortunately those Republicans we voted in also happen to be Baby boomers and just like everything else connected to that generation they to are also turning out to be failures.
his pic on the left (naturally)
But the true measure of how low so many of my generation fell was, and is, their treatment of unborn human beings as nothing but garbage. After that, it came as no surprise that they would ordain homosexual clergy in "churches" that rejected God's Word and sought to sanctify abominations. I would like say that there have been other American generations that have produced vipers this bad, but I don't think there are.
seems to me this is a Reagan/Bush/Bush problem. Clinton, for all his flaws and faults, did balance the budget
Slick's republican congress "balanced" the budget. Reagan's & the 1st Bush's democrat congresses didn't. Not to say the presidents weren't to blame, but culpability for the debt does not rest solely on the president.
But what we're talking about is exactly what the ranter meant. If anyone actually tried to balance the federal budget (and I'm not talking about Slick's fake balanced budget), there would be deafening howls from every special interest group. This is the culture that the boomer generation created.
Thank you for pointing that out. I have had the same girlfriend for 4 years, and she has stated to me that it would not bother her in the slightest, if I were to move home with my father, and conserve finances, thus eliminating debt, and eventually saving for an engagement ring. This is in stark contrast to her college friend, who has been dating her boyfriend for less than a year and a half, and has already moved in with him. In my opinion, this is a recipe for disaster, simply because there is no commitment involved. It doesn't surprise me however, as this woman has done whatever she wanted, whenever she wanted to.
Well, I am a "boomer" and don't like panzies, be it a boomer or whatever, nor do I like the generalization of any one group, hence my little "rant."
I am a boomer and treasure my right to BEAR ARMS and other issues concerning that.
Of course if I blamed all my problems on my parents generation I could cry a river a mile wide. Let's see, Hitler, Stalin, Mao, Lenin, Trotsky, stock market manipulation leading to the Great Depression and the socialization of our country with the New Deal and two World Wars to name a few. But I choose not to do that. Instead I see a generation that labored 10 times harder than I did to build the infrastructure of this country and defeated the greatest evils this world has ever seen.
You are no different now than the hippies that saw the establishment as the enemy back in the 60's and blamed all the wrong in the world on it. You think only you have the answers and only your generation has the keys to utopia. You are entitled to that belief because your sons and daughters and grandsons and granddaughters will think the same of you.
Thankfully with age comes wisdom and with wisdom comes the knowledge that you cannot separate yourself from the past. It is as much a part of you as your arms or legs, what you are is built upon on what has gone before. You then realize that each individual is responsible for the good or evil that they do. A Hitler or a Pol Pot can exist at anytime, a Chomsky or a Clinton is not a new invention of the 60's, history is full of turncoats and traitors. History is full of adulterers and mass murderers and cheap politicians are a dime a dozen in any era.
The wise person looks at the past and looks at what he can learn and take to improve on. He also knows when perfection has been achieved and cannot be improved upon but only broken down. The Holy Bible and the United States Constitution with the Bill of Rights are two of those perfections of past generations.
Well I've been working my f'ing ass off longer than 30 years and what do I have to show? Another 20 years or more of the same ol' same ol' I can't afford to retire at 65, so don't climb that horse too high the falls can really hurt.
No need to stereotype just do the math. If a boomer is anyone over 40 or 45 then most liberals AND Conservatives in education are boomers. Just about any group today except for youth oriented groups like sports and entertainment are going to have more boomers than anything else.
When I went to college in the early 70's most profs were also liberal and they were not boomers, it's the profession not the age that attracts the liberals (the worst were the longhairs born in the 20's and 30's) or maybe it's the profession that makes the liberals.
Today most of the weepy mommyists around primary education were born after 1965 and are not boomers. They are the ones that are outlawing the peanuts and the finger guns, not some old creaky boomer that has raised 2 kids in a cigarette smoke-filled home with a bowel of peanuts on the table. These evil boomers would rather that no school taxes be paid and are not scheming some new government program jus' for the chillins.
I'm sure if you went to an anti-war in rally San Francisco any Freepers in attendance would be an extreme minority. By the same token, I would expect to run into several of them at "Support the Troops" rally in Houston. My point is that my rant wasn't about what everyone in a specific generation thought, but about what was considered fashionable by a generation.
There is no doubt about it, every generation contributes both good and bad to American culture. But in the generations which preceded the Boomers people like the Rosenbergs were abhorred, while for the boomers people like Abbie Hoffman were proclaimed the visionaries of the age. Not by everyone of course, and even less so by people who would inevitably become members of FR, but for the majority, the "counter culture" became the prevailing fashion.
It has been the Boomers time to set the fashion where liberal thinking made the greatest gains. This doesn't mean that if you were born during those years you are a bad person, only that you are more likely to be in the minority. Many of you who are Freepers and Boomers illustrated that point far better than I when you said how disgusted you were with your peers. So I guess my secret is out, I wasn't talking about all Boomers just liberal Boomers.
The Boomers have effected the biggest changes in our culture over the last half century or so, and in my opinion the sum total of the effect of those changes was negative. They have made all levels of government less efficient and more costly and gave it greater power to intrude in our lives. They have enforced the courts ability to interfere with law abiding citizens while limiting it's ability to deal with criminals. They have made every effort to destroy the family as a decision making unit and to redefine every one of the time tested cornerstones of our culture from marriage, to our community to our military and private organizations (like the boy scouts) right down to our very relationships with god.
Mind you not everyone in that age group feels that way but the minority has certainly been shouted down.
I posted my rant to foster discussion and it has apparently done that. I knew that at FR I would be preaching to the choir, but I guess I wanted to give the choir a little kick. We all know a liberal or two who is probably a Boomer, but I think they are probably old enough now to know better. When I hear a 20 year old college kid spouting about all the injustice I usually leave him alone. I know time and a job will fix most of what's wrong with him. But in the Boomer's case I think they are old enough to understand that they should start thinking about social policy as something more than a means toward self congratulation. I think it's time we went to them and told them that their party is over and they should start thinking about someone other than themselves. They should take it upon themselves to pick up a sponge and bucket and start helping us clean up the mess they made instead of trying to talk the band into one more encore.
My generation will certainly make it's mistakes too, but I think we're past the tipping point. Socialism is dead. It won't be coming back into fashion for anyone older than 22. Going forward it will be more and more of a fringe group for the immature. And hopefully the mistakes we do make will have a little less reach.
No promises on the outcome mind you. I may turn out to be even more of a minority than many of you were. But I promise to make what noise I can.
Thanks everyone for your comments.
Now go throw some water on a liberal who is old enough to know better.
Not as long as people think in collectivist terms and lump all people born between certain dates into a "class" and define them on that basis.
Down the establishment.
Never trust anyone over 30.
Never trust anyone in an uniform.
These were some credos of the generation that you speak of and of course they thought that THEY could do a better job when they were over 30, in uniform and the establishment. You aptly stated what we got when they took over and hosited THEIR vision of the world on the rest of us.
I fear now you want to hoist yours and when your generation gets the power what methods will they use to claim their "new utopia"? Sometimes the medicine is worse than the disease.
There were little documents written over 200 years ago, The United States Constitution and the Bill of Rights, they have in it the path to walk and the way to do it. I would no sooner want to live in a country where the liberal had no voice than I would where the Conservative was silenced. I do want to live in a country where the Constitution is revered and followed and where the righting of wrongs is done in a Constitutional fashion. If we are to survive we must do this, if we adopt the liberal's tactics no matter how right we are we are wrong.
Make your divisions if you will but make them along the lines of Constitutional behavior and the heart, spirit and intent of our Founders. There are 90 year old men and 15 year old teenagers that love this country as you do. No one holds a high mount from which to preach, that is the essence of Freedom.
That would be the same majority that elected Reagan.
" Xers lean to the right"
The election of Clinton would have been the Xers first national vote.
As a "Boomer", I primarily blame the federal government. I've spent the majority of my adult life working to correct that government. I am most sorry to report that it appears to be a losing fight; as the Republicans have now embraced socialism.
As an "Xer", you seem to primarily blame your parents(and their generation). How original. How brave. How socially responsible.
The Dixie Chicks & Johnny Depp.......all "Xers".
"Xers" have not yet established any record. What a great convenience.......makes it easier to criticise others.
Wait a minute.......there is one entry:
"Boomers" gave us two terms of Reagan.
"Xers" gave us two terms of Clinton.
Comparing your tomorrows to my yesterdays.
Again, I applaud your bravery.
Let's talk again when you have actually done the walk.
It has always been the case that children think they know everything, and that their parents are idiots. But; I'm this is entirely different, right?
I have no guilt either.
The difference is that I have actually done something. I've made the arguments, done the campaigning, elected the finest President ever, defeated the Democrats & the Soviets.
You have brought us Menudo & Britney Spears.
One should be built free when one hasn't done anything. What have you done to warrant this conceited pride though? Oh, that's right. It comes from what you are going to do tomorrow.
I suggest that you continue to do nothing. Only then can you maintain your pride, your bravery, and remain guilt free.
I've been a conservative since before you were born. Your generation continues to spit on me. Now there is something to be proud of.
"We'll just have to see...". Now there's a record to be proud of, and nothing to feel guilty about.
Of course I could be missing yours as well.
