No...

The problem with McClintock is that he can't garner votes from ANYONE but Conservative Republicans. And California, unfortunately doesn't have enough of those. They do have enough of Independent and free thinking Democrats that will cross over and help someone like Arnold win though.

It's not that hard to grasp, really.

I hate to tell you another fact you won't like, but modern politics is basically just that.

I'm interested in a serious discussion. Do you think this is to be wished for? Or do you think it's unfortunate, but unavoidable?

I can hear Arianna now and and it hurts to think about it.

But dahhhhlink, I get allerrrrgic smelling hay...

I know, let's put Cruz Bustamante between Arianna and Mary Carey! Ohhhh the possible seating arrangements! We could stick Larry Flynt on Arianna's immediate left, hahaha, maybe that will finish him off!!

Conservative Arnold supporters would vote for McClintock if he could win, but that's at most half of Arnold's base. The other half are liberals who would vote for Bustamante and maybe even against the recall. So divide Arnolds 53% by two, give 26.5% to Bust and 26.5% to McClintock and you see why these guys are going to vote for Arnold.

Who says Arnold is my boy? If I lived in California I'd vote for McClintock. However, that does not change the political reality of how a frontrunner deals with debates.

Please tell me one policy difference between Arnold and his Uncle Teddy Kennedy.

Just off the top of my head. Teddy hasn't seen a tax he doesn't like, while Arnold thinks that Californians are taxed too much.

I'm not an either-or supporter ('specially since I don't live in CA). It was just a statement of principle -- I think it's lame for politicians to only participate in debates when they get the questions beforehand.

I disagree. Please explain to me how extemporeneous speaking skills translate to being a good Govenor. Yes, it may demonstrate a mastery of the issues, or it may show the politician has good "zinger" writers. However, that doesn't mean doodley squat. I've known may good managers who couldn't spout out minutia about what the people below them were doing, yet they were darn good managers. Gore was a wonk, but he would have been a Terrible president. Knowing policy minutia and saying zingers aren't near as important as the ability to assemble a good team, give them a vision and let them do their jobs.

Oh Well...I guess I am just a hopeless romantic...and will vote my desire while going down in the flames of defeat. Seeing as I live in California and will have to live with the consequences.

I just remember too recently that the newscats were "shocked" that Simon won as much as he did after running a horrible campaign and coming off looking like an idiot. I guess I just feel like there is still hope in the momentum from last time...

Yep.

Or do you think it's unfortunate, but unavoidable?

Yep.

There is politics the way I wish it could be, and politics the way it is. This is a mutant election, so there aren't primaries to flesh out views within the party. And the time frame is highly compressed.

Personally, I favor McClintock and would vote for him if I lived in California. But as an observer of politics here on FR for many years, I also know that when it comes to debates, the front runner generally tries to avoid them and those trailing the leader want as many as possible. And, in an election cycle of 60 days and on a ballot of 130 some-odd names, name recognition is everything. It stinks like dead meat, but that's how things are.

Hope springs eternal. I don't see any problem with people campaigning for McClintock, the Arnold bashing is a bit over the top but I understand why it's happening. If I were in your shoes my actual vote decision wouldn't be made until I was driving to the polls, if it looked like Bustamonte would lose no matter who I voted for I'd vote for McClintock, if it looked like Bustamonte would win unless the conservatives rallied around the same flag I'd vote for the guy with the best chance of beating Bustie. "My guy right or wrong" got us 8 years of Clinton, at the last minute conservatives should have pulled together under the same flag rather than being proud of their ideals as the ship sank. Dieing with honor is OK, but not dieing at all is better.

The term RINO is so subjective. Probably every Republican is one to someone else!

I prefer calling myself a "Broken Glass Republican".

I HATE the rats. I wouldn't vote for Zell Miller over Olympia Snow simply because I wouldn't want to take the one vote away from the Senate Republicans and give it to the rats...Even though Zell probably represents my ideology better.

And out of respect for true "Conservatives" I don't like calling myself one. It would be hypocritical of me to do so based on a few of my own personal beliefs on some issues (Abortion being the biggest one. Plus, I'm not "Religious". I believe in God, but I don't neccisarily believe the Bible was written by him).

Anyway...I vote Republican...PERIOD!

Make any sense??
