Johnny on the spot after he slams U.S. (Johnny Depp)
New York Daily News ^ | 9/04/03 | Rush & Molloy

Johnny Depp is feeling patriotic - about France.

The "Pirates of the Caribbean" star slammed the United States over Iraq in an interview in the German magazine Stern this week.

"America is dumb, is something like a dumb puppy that has big teeth - that can bite and hurt you, aggressive," he was quoted as saying.

Depp lives in France with the French singer and actress Vanessa Paradis, with whom he has two children.

He said he was delighted when he saw that French fries had been rechristened "freedom fries" in the U.S. Capitol canteen.

"Nothing made me happier than when I read that - grown men and grown women in positions of power in the United States government," Depp said. "I was ecstatic because they revealed themselves as idiots."

He said he wants his children - Lily-Rose, 4, and Jack, 1 - to regard the U.S. "like it's a kind of a toy - a broken toy, maybe. Investigate a little bit, check it out, get this feeling and then get out."

Depp joins a chorus of complaint over U.S. policy expressed recently by actors including Harrison Ford, Sean Penn and Susan Sarandon.

Coming a few days after the one-time Indiana Jones knocked the Bush administration, Depp's dig prompted a counterattack of punditry.

"There's no puppy love for a bunch of terrorist killers who slew 3,000 people in New York City not long ago," Larry Kudlow, of CNBC's "Kudlow and Cramer," told us. "Maybe Mr. Depp should think about that. Unfortunately, a lot of good actors say very stupid things. Frankly, I'm sorry he said this, because I was looking forward to seeing 'Pirates of the Caribbean,' but I'm not going to now."

Joe Scarborough, of MSNBC's "Scarborough Country," agreed that it was "a stupid thing to say. But he's got the freedom to say it because we liberated the French from Hitler."

Though he normally leans right, the former congressman added, "I'm a big Johnny Depp fan. The guy has already voted with his feet [by moving to France]. I don't think he's being hypocritical, because he's not enjoying American freedoms."

As it happens, Depp will be in the U.S. this weekend - visiting New York for the premiere of his movie "Once Upon a Time in Mexico," which co-stars Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek.

Chelsea set to wed?

Are Chelsea Clinton and boyfriend Ian Klaus circling the altar?

The former First Daughter, 23, just returned from a romantic Spanish getaway with her 24-year-old boyfriend.

"Chelsea and Ian's trip basically amounted to a honeymoon before the marriage," a pal says in the National Enquirer's next issue.

That's probably hyperbole, but the two plan to live in New York - mind you, in separate apartments.

Though it's said she'lll be earning a salary of $120,000, Chelsea is "going to be living in Manhattan with a good friend of hers," Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton told reporters on Tuesday.

"She is starting work this week at McKinsey [& Co.], which is a consulting firm here in the city," said the senator, adding, "I don't know what consultants do. I asked her that and she goes, 'Oh, mom!'"

Aside to Hillary: The Enquirer also features photos of your bikini-clad baby frolicking with Klaus in the hotel's pool.

Actors/actresses live in a world of make-believe. Unable to embrace the concepts of world realities, they live in that dream world where they play for money and play their lives out. It's clear Depp is another mentally damaged human with the usual delusions of self-importance. It's a damned shame he was allowed to breed. Perhaps, his offspring will reject his "occupation" in the future and seek competent help so they will not be afflicted with his, and his "companion's", disease.

Until he renounces his US citizenship, he remains a hypocrite. That will sever all ties to American freedoms.

He remains an American in exile at this point. Pining for Albert Gore Junior to take a seat in the oval office.

He said this to the Germans?

Johnny Depp is still making movies?

I thought he was just another burned-out Mouseketeer, sunk into obscurity and living in the south of France, like Barbra Streisand.

Oh puleeze! His wife is French and she wanted to be with her family. Voting with his feet means she was taking the kids with her and if he wanted to smoke pot with them and provide a "role model" for them he better move too.

With all of the Muslims taking over France, he has some nerve calling the US a broken toy. I wonder if he has taken in any of the heat-afflicted in his surely air-conditioned Villa.

Where I come from, pointing out your salary is considered quite tacky and unprofessional....however, I have to hand it to The Rodstain here as she comes of very condescending and arrogant while elevating her daughter many thousands of dollars over the middle class little people who just want a tax cut...

The last Johnny Depp movie I saw was "Nine Gates" I think, and although he's another celebrity moron it didn't take his ignorant statements to convince me never to go see another one. At least he moved to France instead of just saying it though. As far as "dumb puppies", I admit he must be right...especially if they are paying to see his crap (regardless of how good it might be) after making these sort of statements. It's like being looked in the eye and told "You're a dumb puppy American...now go watch my movie!!"

That's because Chelsea doesn't know what consultants do either.

(In fact when people ask her exactly how she got the $120,000/year job, her response is exacly the same..."Oh, mom".)

Comment on the Chelsea item: I think Chelsea will announce her wedding plans to coincide w/her mother's run for the roses. Like the book tour this summer took the spotlite away from the dem candidates. Like the book tour next summer will take away from the dem candidates. All politics is planned.
