Riyadh denies US access to Saudi suspect with knowledge of NYC poison gas plot

Saudis have denied US officials access to several suspects in their custody, including a Saudi Arabian man alleged to have knowledge of a plot to spread poison gas in the New York City subway, according to Time magazine.

"Some critics of Saudi Arabia are suggesting that the US invaded the wrong country and seized the wrong oil wells in the spring," according to a special report marking the two-year anniversary of the September 11 attacks, which was due to hit newsstands Monday.

US officials would like to speak to the Saudi suspect to see how far the plot advanced and whether he had associates in the United States, the magazine reported.

The Saudis have provided no detailed information about him, according to the magazine.

"From (Vice President) Cheney, Secretary of State Colin Powell, National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice and, significantly, his father, President George W. Bush is hearing a singular line from his most important foreign policy advisers - that he must engage with the Saudis, work with them to bring about change and not alienate them," the magazine said.

"Indeed, when President Bush spoke to (Saudi Crown Prince) Abdullah for 20 minutes by phone last week, say US and Saudi sources, he went out of his way to compliment the Prince on Saudi Arabia's efforts to combat terrorism." (Albawaba.com)

Why wait? The long, hot summer is coming to an end. This all began with the Wahabite filth, so let's "return the favor"!

Lost me right there. I still want an ICBM aimed at Mecca, but I am sick and tired of hearing that we:

1: "Invaded the wrong country"...BULL. Saddam HAD to come down. YES the Sunni Saudis SUPPORTED SADDAM, but we STILL HAD TO TAKE DOWN SADDAM.

2: That we seized the "wrong oil wells" this neo-lib crap was a lie when we were accused of only wanting Afghanistan's oil (it never had any) or that we went back into Iraq because it was "all about oil". I am so SICK AND TIRED OF THIS PROPAGANDA.

BUSH IS NOT IN THE SAUDIS' POCKETS. IT'S NOT ALL ABOUT OIL.

MECCA and MEDINA people, MECCA and MEDINA. YOU WANT TENS MILLIONS OF NEW TERRORISTS OVERNIGHT, SOME OF THEM YOUR FRIENDS AND NEIGHBORS, AND KIDS WHO GO TO SCHOOL WITH YOUR OWN, BY ALL MEANS, JUST JUMP BLINDLY INTO SAUDI! TALK ABOUT NO PLAN OF ACTION! TALK ABOUT NO THEATER! TALK ABOUT NO EXIT PLAN! THE QUICKEST WAY TO LOSE THE WAR ON TERRORISM IS TO BE SO STUPID AS TO TAKE OVER SAUDI THE WAY WE DID IRAQ.

I agree with you. In fact, I sometimes wonder if bin Laden didn't deliberately try to get us to indiscriminately bomb Saudi Arabia by choosing Saudis as 15 of the 19 9/11 bombers -- it seems like the terrorists we've caught since then are 40% Saudi and 40% Pakistani (and 20% assorted other nationalities). It does seem clear that we must do something about the Wahhabists in Saudi Arabia, but we should tread very carefully lest we spring a trap...

The Saudi royal family created this monster, and yes, it is a trap in a way. We CAN get around it, but it'll take time, patience and most of all, FOCUS.

"I agree that invading Saudi Arabia is not a bright course of action, but, kissing up to them is not working either."

It only APPEARS we're kissing up to them and...I didn't mention any screenames when I put in the accusation of Bush being in the Saudi royals pocket etc. I was repeating rhetoric in general terms. Thank you for your honesty though.

I agree with you 100 percent about our policy toward Israel, though if we publically support Israel anymore than we do now the violence will likely only increase because, as everyone knows, Sharon runs Washington (DeVillepinhead)

We need to be consistant and quit the waffeling...which means first of all, shutting State up, especially Powell whi just has this THING, like a crush or something, on Yasser.

Maybe not. Just return Mecca and Medina to the control of the Hashemites, ie give it to Jordan ( with the understanding that they behave or else). Or make it a nation onto itself, like the Vatican. Saudi control of Mecca and Medina is a recent historical development, and not irreversible.

Good idea...unfortunately, I have no idea how we can get there from here, because we certiainly can't plow through Saudi....yet. Not morally speaking. Also, it seems that, considering most Muslime clerics who weild power are Wahhabists, Jordan would soon regret it.

I don't doubt that some members of the Saudi royal government are right now frantically paying the terrorists to stop embarrassing them by attacking people within the kingdom, while some are still working toward rooting out, shooting or arresting terrorists and SOME are just sitting quietly and waiting for the storm to blow over and the status quo to return. It's a big family. Of course, they have like 60 "wives" apiece. It's a complicated problem, the royal family is part but not all of it and there's no easy solution.

There should be NO DOUBT...
The House of Saud and the Wahhabi sect ARE THE ENEMY.

THEY and they alone have unleashed the hatred.
They have financed the terrorists, built the Mosques that teach the hate and built the schools that brainwash their children.

They are the enemy...
To refuse to acknowledge that is to ignore facts...

Frankly, I'm not interested in any of the "easy solutions"..
The SOLUTION will involve a lot of death and destruction.. I prefer it is the Islamists in the House of Saud and the Wahhabi sect that do the dying.....

If the House of Saud doesn't have the heart or sense to clean up their own mess --- then there will be consequences --- when others are forced to do it for them..

Diplomacy and Negotiation with these Islamists is never going to be fruitful..
History has shown that...
They will have to be defeated in an unquestionable manner, and have the terms of "peace" dictated to them..
