America's first publicly-funded school for gay and lesbian teenagers has opened its doors in New York.
The first day for the 72 students was marked with noisy displays of support and opposition.
Opponents staged a demonstration outside the Harvey Milk High School waving placards.
One of them said: "Sodomy - it's to die for."
One of the protesters said opening a school for gays was a retrograde step.
He said: "We're going back to the point where blacks and whites will be wanting their own schools. It's absolutely insane."
But a school supporter said all the pupils wanted to be there and had the blessing of their families.
"It's a place where they can feel safe," he added.
Harvey Milk High School is run by a charity but receives £2m in cash from city officials.
It hopes to increase the number of students to 100 in the near future.

So when will they open a school for STRAIGHTS ONLY?
I guess that's not P.C. in our gay-loving society.

Think about it for a moment.
So when will they open a school for STRAIGHTS ONLY?
If all the homosexuals are in seperate schools, what are the schools that are left? Are they not "Straight only"?
I'm not so sure I disapprove of putting all homosexuals and lesbians into their own schools.
To: tomball
Only in NY, or perhaps Kollyfornya, would the taxpayers support this kind of stupidity.

But it's voluntary. Homosexuals can still go to the regular schools. His comment, if I understand it correctly, is that what if we tried to open a school that "prohibits" homosexuals as this school "prohibits" heterosexuals. No can do.
To: 2timothy3.16
Consider this: In this opening of a gay high school we have the tacit encouragement of homosexual behavior, with all it's pain, disease, and heartache. Those kids are being lied to by the left, and it's disgusting.

$2M in funding from the city, and 72 students equals $28K per student. I guess some animals ARE more equal than others.

If I had a child in the NYC school system I would demand a school for him / her (the white straight school?) with funding equal to the massive amount of money this school is getting. This surely would not stand up in court.

But a school supporter said all the pupils wanted to be there and had the blessing of their families. Although at first glance setting up a special school for gays seems insane this may actually be an important step toward school choice in public education if we play it right. After all, if gay students and their parents can opt out of schools that fail to protect and educate them why can't others as well? Moves like this undercut the logic behind the education monopoly's rejection of choice.

I think discriminatory is the word.
To: tomball
A morning radio show aired a few tapes of protesters, some of them children...of course, they all sounded so much like bigots, using words like "fag" and "queer"...and words like that just adds fuel to the gay agenda.
Why can't there be a reasonable debate around this school? The fact that it is segregated for homosexuals only is reason enough to take it to court!

Exactly. I would like to see how many of these kids have ended up in happy, healthy lives 20 years from now. We are telling them that their lifestyle is ok, and the odds are for so many of them it will lead to an early death.
My high school class was from 1974 near NYC. They were still living in the "if it feels good do it" free love attitude of the 70's, and nobody knew about AIDS then. So many of them ended up very dead very young.

Hey pal, we do not have a choice. THe city government is so intrenched that the notion of the citizens having a voice in any of this is absurd. Do you think that New Yorker's wanted the smoking ban or an 18% increase in property taxes (which just gets passed to the tenant?)
In the 20+ years I have been in NYC I have never seen a more arrogant and dicatorial City government, nor have I seen such a supine electorate.
The City is in big trouble.

Hmmm. I guess it's back to "separate but equal". Well, I guess some people are more equal than others.

I've heard they are having a good number of disciplinary problems. Quite a few are being sent to the Principal's Orifice every day.

So many of them ended up very dead very young. That is terrible. The consequences of a lifestyle that veers from the truth are often severe.
