I live in a small town of about 10,000. In the 16 years I have lived here, I have never seen anyone in a wheelchair on the sidewalks. About 8 years ago, every corner of every street was torn up and wheelchair accessable ramps were put in.

Somebody, somewhere determined that taxpayers should spend an untold amount of money on the possibility that a person in a wheelchair might some day want to cross the street.

I have no problem with these modification when the side walks are being built or being repaired, but in this case, everyone in the city was redone.

That is one of the things that pushes me a way from being reasonable to this type of request.

I'll just go ahead and ignore your posts from now on. You obviously haven't read through this thread and just want to continue to justify your position without consideration to others.

"So if you can't eliminate all peanuts, you might as well not eliminate any of it?"

I merely said I hope you're right and that this kid doesn't die from some other exposure to peanuts, e.g. on the bus. Don't get your panties in a wad.

And you would rather wait until a cripple shows up, and then have them wait around to have each curb modified?

Well, in this case, the cripple is already here. And all he's asking is that people pack something else in their children's lunch. Completely unreasonable, I know.

I have diabetes. One of the things I do (I refuse to take meds) is eat peanuts because they have the effect of lowering my blood sugar dramatically. I often carry them with me as a snack when I can't get an actual meal. The ravages of diabetes are well known - blindness, amputations, heart disease, premature death. The damage is cumulative. Anything that I can do to keep it down means a longer healthier life for me (and others).

Now the question to be asked is this: In the real world, whose problem should be given preference? Does my right to preserve my life take second place to the possible damage than can occur if I come into contact with someone that has an allergy to my cure?

I have to adapt to treat my disease. I don't ask anyone to change their life to accomodate me.

Not a matter of inconvenience. A peanut allergy, although rare, can be fatal. Even a very slight exposure could be fatal, especially at a place like a school or playground where there might be no special medical equipment (or an adult) close at hand.

Similarly, traffic accidents, although rare, can be fatal.

Better to ban all moving vehicles than risk a life.

Badray, if we were hanging out somewhere and you pulled out a bag of Planters to help control blood sugar, I'd just leave and come back later.

Any other problems that come up, we could work out, I'm sure.

If we cooperate there is no need for complex government policies or questions of who gets preference.

If you got into a situation where your eating peanuts would definitely impact an allergic person, to the point of causing a big reaction, what would you do?

Feel free to ignore me, but I assure you that not only have I thoroughly read the posters (and comprehended what I've read), but I've done some research of this topic independently before this thread was even started. Try not to insult my intelligence and I'll try to be civil.

They have the best commercials too!

Heh...too bad they don't carry pets. But then, Kitty doesn't want frequent flyer miles. :)

"...what would you do?"

I would react to help a person in need, of course. My back just gets up when I hear of preemptive, nanny state, one-size-fits-all solutions that lack common sense, efficiency, and usefulness.
