ADDENDUM: LETTER FROM 90 WEST STREET

"To the Editor:

A friend e-mailed me your article on 90 West Street - a building we both used to work in. I just wanted to inform you of a correction. Two people died in an elevator at 90 West - where the article states "Everyone was OK". After the first plane hit, 90 West lost power. Unfortunately, only one elevator was inoperative - the elevator with the people inside. Close friends of mine (employees of Cushman & Wakefield), were the last to speak to [name deleted to protect victim's privacy] alive. I'm told, after all was over, it took firemen over three hours to get to them in the elevator. No one even knew he was not alone until the firemen were able to gain access to the car. I don't know the other person's name, but I'm told it was a young girl. They both died of smoke inhalation.

But 90 West was not just a place where I worked, it was a place where I met my best and closest friends. We naturally were in the Trade Center every day - for lunch, shopping and transportation. Although countless people were affected, it was like our neighborhood. Now, a year later, I still haven't been down there. At first I was seeking closure, but decided my mental images, my memories, were the ones I wanted to keep.

Tom Arezzi"

Actually until recently, there was a site that contained 4 or 5 "censored police photos" of bodies recovered in the concourse under the WTC or near the subway; I couldn't tell, but the tile and stairs looked similiar to some photos from the FEMA site. All women. One of the dead is in front of a shattered gift shop with merchandise and cigarette cartons scattered everywhere. A couple of others are either badly burned or decomposed. Everyone here would find them extremely disturbing. I had them on a small D drive that went bad so I can't post them (!) and now can't find them omline. If they where authentic or not I don't know.

When I look at these photos you posted; I ask myself "What happened to these people?" " Are they ok now?" " what is that stuffing on the ground? Is that aircraft insulation? I s that part of the aircraft skin? Is she still alive? Is he ok? ( the bloody guy) It's like I want to know who each person is and how they are now, to talk to them and be their friend, don't you?
And what is the big blood smear on the road the cop is steering everyone around? What in the hell happened here?
Too many questions and few answers.

I'd buy that argument if there weren't literally hundreds of examples of the
media showing blood and gore, and not giving a dam about anyone's sensitivities.

Oh, the selective application of "sensitivity" in what the media prints/broadcasts
is abundantly clear.
I'm absolutely in agreement with that.

My guess is that the phenomenon of the media self-censorship we saw after 9-11,
depending on the individual company probably arose from motive all along the spectrum
from angelic concerns for survivors' feelings to totally cynical desires
to make sure Mr. And Ms. America don't get the full impact of what Islamics
really would like to do to all of America, if they could.

And your example of the LA police car-pursuits...that's about the only
real growth industry here besides the porn empire of the San Fernando Valley!
And shows what the real reptilian motives of a lot of the local channels are.

"It didn't at first enter my mind that I was in danger, only that a great catastrophe was underway. Plane parts were on the ground on Vesey Street. People were fleeing buildings in tears, some injured. On Church Street and Dey, I saw a friend, Police Officer Bobby Fazio, helping a man suffering burns to his face and back. He handed off that man to medical crews and ran back to the buildings to see who else he could help. That was the last I saw of him. I raced to Liberty Street once Susan Watts from the News showed. There were body parts and luggage scattered on the ground - a human hand pointed at me on the pavement. Jagged parts of the plane were strewn about, one spear-like piece having pierced the hood of an auto. It is here that David Handschuh and I crossed paths momentarily. Cars were burning in the parking lot and firefighters were attempting to put them out as small pieces of debris rained down from above. A firefighter was struck by something that fell from the building, his head and chest bloodied. Fellow firefighters were dragging him away from the danger, one screaming "hold on, brother, hold on." Incredible Denver Post article about that teacher getting heat over covering 9-11.

And some folks wonder why home schooling is growing and growing...

. It is here that David Handschuh and I crossed paths momentarily.

I remember seeing David Handschuh on a panel on The Charlie Rose Show.
His story about arriving on the scene early and getting lots of photos...and then
being rescued by FDNY after his leg was broken...a real story.
IIRC, Handschuh said he had some photos that he'd never publish (as even he was
disturbed by them despite all his years in photojournalism).

(For those photographers/videographers, I wish they'd at least allow the
material that they can't bring themselves to publish...that they'd at least
give them to the National Archives with a proviso to not release them until some later date.)

True. How are they different from Brady's photos of Civil War dead, or the color film of dead on the beach at Tarawa.
In this war, every US citizen is a combatant.
It's part of our history.

How are they different from the bloody marketplace in Sarajevo the mainstream media ran over and over. The dead,
naked corpses being fished out of the water after the USS Vincennes shot down the Iranian airliner. These were shown over and over on TV news, to support the agenda of the media.

I find the photos unsettling. But here, I think, is a need to know what really happened here.

In all fairness to Guillermo, this was actually addressed by our President Bush. In his State of the Union address, he said that America will help the oppressed people "secure their country, rebuild their society and educate all their children-boys and girls."

Our military can end the regimes of today. But, then, we must step up and finish the job. We need to contribute to feed, clothe and educate the citizens of these countries; otherwise, the terrorist will come back and recruit.

These regimes keep their citizens uneducated and diseased. They live a life where your own brother will stab you in the back for 'something' you may have.

Then the terrorists come and recruit you. They give you food, clothes, an education, and a wife. "It's a good deal" a first ranked mujahiddeen told me. Then the regime will continue to support your family once you are martyred.

This is what our President meant by educating and rebuilding their society. I think Guillermo's post sounded like that too.

So sad. And quite an insight into how it might have all looked and sounded to an eight-year-old.

You might want to explain to her that New York City is also "News City"; the camera trucks are practically ubiquitous here and of course they were all going to rush right over to the WTC. But it still took time to get there, depending on where they were when the first plane hit. I don't recall any televised footage from street level until after the second plane hit---up til that point, every channel was showing the same live feed from the NBC traffic helicopter, which had already been up in the air at the time.

Wow! That deserves a thread of its own, in my opinion. Although I personally am on the side of the teacher, I'm sure other FReepers would have a range of opinions on this. From my point of view, as long as the kids are say, 9 or 10 or older, and the teacher was approaching it in a dignified, truthful way, it could only be beneficial to cover the attacks in class as it seems this teach was doing.

Do you know if there was ever a stat published on how many people on the ground or in other buildings died as a result of falling bodies, debris and the resulting fires?

Oh, yes, I really DO wish I could know each personal story and comfort every individual. I also wish I were able to be on the front lines with our troops. But since I can't do either of those things, then the least I can do is make sure the truth of what happened — is still happening — NEVER GETS BURIED. There may be but little I can do, but it will get done.

You are right, of course, VOA. Especially in your comments about local news. Disgraceful and reptillian don't even begin to describe them. But, then, it's one instance when mere words fail.
