I'll post a link on the Canteen and the Foxhole, both have a lot of traffic from vets.
Maybe we can get the VetsCor board to make a note of it during their board meeting...

I've been trying since December to get my father's service records. I wrote to my Congresswoman in December, and finally received a copy of the letter her staffwrote to the service center - in June. Still nothing. I also went to the website (can't even remember which one now, it's been so long) and requested his records. Also December. Nothing. I suspect that his records were destroyed in the infamous fire. I have his service number and dates of service (WW II), but just haven't gotten very far. He's been deceased now for 12 years, so I can't ask him directly.

If you are very lucky among your father's papers there should be a DD form 214, Record of Service and Discharge (may not be that exact form number but the title should be similar). That plus what you already know and this link maay just get you what you are looking for.
Also, you might want get in touch with the nearest American Legion Post to you. They may be able to help get you to the right person in the maze of letter openers who actually knows how to help.

I believe I do have a copy of his discharge form. My mother gave me copies of those papers. Thanks. I'll check into the American Legion. I think there is a post in the next town over. I'd just like to find out if there are more details available about his service, such as where he had been.

I just had another thought, go to
Army Times and click about us then on the right side of the window click Editorial Contact Information. You should have a number of email addresses that could help you post an advertisment in the Army Times or one of the other services Times for information on your father. You'd have to tell all the important stuff like full name, and the rest of what's on his discharge papers but you should get something back if his service brothers who served with him have not yet made the move to the final duty station.

It's been 2 months since I requested mine. **
I waited 6 months for my fathers from WWII but had records from the Revolutionary War & Civil War come back in just weeks. It all depends on how much information was provided along with the request, and how busy they are at the time.

Probably NOT, there was a big FIRE several years ago and many records were destroyed. I tried to get hubby's uncle's records and my Dad's who are both WWII vets, and all I got back was that the fire destroyed those records...sorry.

Thank you for another great suggestion!
I know that my dad wasn't in any combat units - he'd had a degenerative disease that caused his spine to fuse - but I'd still like to know as much as possible about what he'd done and where he was. He didn't talk about it, as many veterans do not.

I signed up for Military.com a few years ago and it seems to be pretty comprehensive on veteran concerns. They have email alerts, free email, and some good job hunting stuff for vets and those planning to become vets.
