Invoking the words of Ronald Reagan -- another actor-turned politician -- Arnold Schwarzenegger told state Republican leaders and activists Saturday he is the only GOP candidate who can unite the party and take back the governor's office from the Democrats.

About 200 people showed up at the bayside park and most of them were waving "McClintock for Governor" signs.

The Rev. Lou Sheldon, who is leading the effort, said his great fear is that Schwarzenegger will take over the state Republican Party -- and marginalize religious conservatives.

Don't worr rev lou... they are doing a fine job of marginalizing themselves... Arnold won't have to do a thing.

It was a Recall Davi$ Rally ,, there was a announcement thread on FR about it.

Bill Simon endorsed Tom at the Rally, btw.

Republican California State Sen. Tom McClintock, right, now a candidate for governor, shakes hands with former Republican gubernatorial candidate Bill Simon Jr. at a rally thrown by the Recall Gray Davis Committee at a park in Long Beach, Calif., Saturday, Sept. 13, 2003. Simon withdrew as a candidate, leaving McClintock and Arnold Schwarzenegger as the leading Republicans in the race. (AP Photo/Reed Saxon)

In his speech, Schwarzenegger referred to himself as a conservative seven times and three times invoked the name of Reagan...

Arnold should be ashamed of himself. This comparison is a brutal outrage. Arnold is a liberal. Reagan was a conservative.

****************************************

"As Governor, Mr. Schwarzenegger would be a darker villain than any he has faced in his movies, sinking the Golden State into a moral vacuum."

"The common wisdom is that Schwarzenegger is a sure winner. A lot of Republicans think he is. But what a lot of those Republicans don’t seem to know, or care, for that matter, is that Arnold is not really a Republican, but a Democrat claiming to be a Republican. Should California Republicans get behind a pseudo-Republican merely to be able to claim that they’ve put a Republican candidate in the governor’s mansion in Sacramento? Are they that desperate?"

"I know it’s asking a lot to suggest that my fellow California Republicans wise up and get behind the most competent candidate in the race, a proven state-wide vote getter, Tom McClintock. He is the only candidate capable of cleaning up the mess in Sacramento and digging the state out of the black fiscal pit in which Davis and the Democrats have buried us."

Michael Reagan

You are abusing your namesake. I think AS should step aside and let McClintock use the same magic that elected Governor Simon. However, on the off chance that he gets crushed, the “principled purists” may find themselves laughed at for the next decade. Simon was just a chuckle compared to this belly laugh.

At the convention, one Schwarzenegger backer after another took the stage to not-so-subtly urge McClintock to get out.

Get out, Tom, before you cause more damage!

Was it as eerie to you as it was to me, watching Arnold pump his fist towards the crowd, repeating 3 times "Let's unite for victory!"

I don't know whether Arnold won over conservatives. He says he is a conservative. Fine - the test will be what he does not what he says. Actions speak louder than words.

Arnold had the audacity to use "A Time for Choosing" as a poor pun to support his own canidacy. Has he ever read the speech? Have his supporters?

I think you've nailed why Arnold has NOT won over conservatives - he hasn't argued for any conservative principle other than no new taxes. Wait, make that, not raising taxes as a first choice.

It isn't just 'social conservatives' (why is that considered a derogatory term on FR?) who worry - Arnold's lack of any specific ideas worries ANYONE who wants to know what a candidate believes.

Arnold could pick up a lot of support quickly if he would just give some indication he thought 'social conservatives' were something other than, "right wing crazies'. But some of us have a hard time getting behind a candidate who thinks we're insane...

The comparison to another politican and egomaniac who was also born in Austria and rose to power in the '30s and was also a powerful "communicator" and used propaganda machines to advance his cause and ensnare the populace with visions grandeur and uniting for a noble cause, I ain't going there. ;-).

You know how that script ended.
