Youths beat, and stab dog

Youths beat, stab dog By Maureen Boyle, Enterprise staff writer BROCKTON — Youths beat and stabbed a 2-year-old dog at Edgar's Playground, leaving the wounded pooch to inch its way home to Brook Street a few houses away. Pug, a shepherd-husky mix, was found stunned and whimpering by its owner, Howard White, on the family's front porch Wednesday after the brutal attack and is now recuperating at a West Bridgewater veterinary clinic. "It is sad to think someone could be so cruel," said White's wife, Susan. Howard White said he returned from grocery shopping about 4 p.m. Wednesday to find Pug and the family's other dog, Rocky, outside and a person who witnessed the attack waiting for the family to return. White said the witness told him at least two youths were seen kicking and beating Pug at the park. White, who did not get the witness' name, is now trying to locate the person and anyone else who may have seen the attack. The witness said the attackers "were tormenting" Pug while the family's second dog, a 7-pound Pomeranian, barked at the men's feet, White said. "They started kicking him and hitting him," he said. White said the dogs were confined to the family's yard, but the smaller dog apparently dug under the fence to escape and Pug followed. Pug appeared stunned standing on the porch, but began experiencing breathing problems once inside and en route to the emergency veterinary hospital in West Bridgewater. "I just kept thinking, 'Don't take him from me,' " White said. Pug was taken Wednesday night to New England Animal Medical Center in West Bridgewater, which offers after-hours emergency animal care. The dog remains there today. Colleen Kelley, a veterinarian at the center caring for Pug, said the dog suffered a single stab wound to the upper side and there are fears there could be a tracheal tear. She said there was some air in the dog's central cavity and there are worries it could increase, causing breathing problems. Surgeons are being consulted to see if Pug needs surgery or if simply closing the wound will be enough, she said. Kelley said she has seen a number of animals abused recently by strangers, including a number who have been shot. The Humane Society of the United States reports there is no firm numbers on how many animals are abused yearly, but, based on cases it has studied, adult and teenaged males commit a higher percentage of intentional animal cruelty. Of cases the group has studied, 5 percent involved an animal being stabbed, 16 percent involved beating, 11 percent involved torturing and 20 percent involved an animal being shot. White said he hopes witnesses will come forward to help authorities identify the suspects before another animal is harmed As he gently petted Pug at the animal hospital Thursday, White said he is still stunned someone could attack his dog. "He is so gentle," said White, a retired postal worker. "Everyone who knows this dog loves him. He would not hurt anyone."

Most likely wouldn't have happened if the owner had kept his dog on a leash or in his own yard.

"What you do unto the least of these, you do unto me."

It took some mighty brave punks to attack that little dog.

Keep pets in the house or on a leash,or don't have one, lucky it wasn't squished by a car when it was limping home.

As for the terrible wastes of skin that did this,...no comment.

You don't care about a bunch of punks who stabbed a family pet? You have no heart and I personally feel contempt for anyone foolish enough to give a damn about you.

Yes, I agree. I don't ordinarily believe in applying capital punishment for "youths," but in this kind of case (the torturing and killing of a dog), it's imperative that an example be set for others.

It got kicked, stabbed and beaten. The pieces of garbage that did this will graduate to humans. If it were you that they graduated to you would definately care.

And if you don't care then why did you bother to comment?

I remember when my dog trotted up to a guy playing basketball. He was obviously afraid of dogs and I told him she was friendly. She came over when I called her, and he then held his basketball up like he was going to throw it at her. My adrenaline kicked in and I don't even remember what I said. But I know I would have gone postal had this man hurt my dog. Nobody hurts my dog.

These kids should get juvie and psyche evals at the very least. And a Pug of all things.

Where's a rabid pit bull when you need one? I'm sure these punks would be just as tough with a couple of angry rotties or a few pits on their sorry butts.

South Boston--I'm not surprised. Inbred townies. They'll graduate to toddlers next, I'm sure.

Ditto. The scum sucking pieces of putrid vomit who did this to that little pug deserve some serious pain.

You can bet the usual crowd will drop by to voice their "But it was a vicious loose dog, the kiddies might have been scared. Dogs are too dangerous and should be killed if not on a leash" bilge.

Yeah, Looks vicious:

Even aside from doing that to the dog, this kind of behavior shows a depraved mind and suggests that they may soon be killing human beings. The police should certainly track them down before they do something even worse.

The article said the dogs were in their yard but one of them dug a hole and they both escaped.

It happens. Dogs have a natural instinct to roam. They are not robots that can be programmed to act in a certain way strictly in accordance with the wishes of humans. If a dog sees or finds a way of escape, they will take it and trot around discovering new places.

That doesn't mean they deserve to be beaten and stabbed by some loser punks.

Thanks, but he's not mine. I have a Boxer and a Boston Terrier.

I would really like for those little punks to try to "beat and stab" the Boxer. He's sweet as can be and friendly to a fault, but I don't know if there would be much left of them. He's pretty intimidating when he bows up. The Boston is probably just like the pug in the story. Small and very kind, no threat to anyone.

Most likely wouldn't have happened if the owner had kept his dog on a leash or in his own yard.

Most certainly a great number of rapes wouldn't have happened if women were not allowed to leave home.

What a strange outlook you have: to deprive the dog of whatever little fredom it has to avoid being tortured by someone that has no place is human society. What can I say, your kindness has no limits.

All animals, like people, are so different and have their own personalities and demeanors.

I have a soft spot in my heart for innocent animals, when tormented, hurt or even killed due to human cruelty.

The picture of my cat above. She is little by other grown cat standards, she has a big growl, yet she wouldn't hurt a person, a fly, an ant or a spider and is afraid of wind coming through the window. Go figure :)

I don't know how a 7 pound dog could dig a hole large enough for a sheperd-husky mix to use to get out of the yard. However, I hope the jerks that did this are caught and punished soon before they have a chance to strike again.

My Boston is scared to DEATH of thunder and lightning. Whenever a thunderstorm would rumble through, she would sit in the center of the room shaking.

Now, whenever it thunders at night, I know we'll soon have a bed companion. We generally don't like her to sleep on the bed, but it's impossible to say "no" at such a pathetic sight.
