Top lawmakers publicly declare their support for the proposal to codify the legal definition of marriage as a union of one man and one woman.
The eons-old understanding of what makes a marriage drew the spotlight Wednesday on Capitol Hill when senators, civil rights leaders and family advocates threw their support behind the Federal Marriage Amendment (FMA).
Erik Hotmire, press secretary to Kansas Republican Sam Brownback, one of the senators present at a news conference in support of the FMA, said the message was clear and unequivocal: Marriage "should be defined as between a man and a woman, simply put."
"As Senator Brownback would say," Hotmire added, "the fact that marriage is between a man and a woman (makes it) the most universal social institution in the world."
Sens. Rick Santorum, R-Pa., and Jeff Sessions, R-Ala., also appeared at the news conference.
Also on hand was Alliance for Marriage President Matt Daniels, a key player behind the FMA, who said the proposed constitutional amendment would protect against tyrannical courts imposing homosexual "marriage" on states.
"Let's put it this way: Our laws defining marriage are like roadmaps that tell young people of the next generation how to find the path to a healthy and satisfying and fulfilling life," Daniels said.
Homosexual activists claim traditional marriage is passé, and that homosexual couples are raising healthy, happy children. Daniels called that the "family evolution argument" — and he rejected it.
"Kids do best when they have a mom and a dad — period," he explained. "The last thing we need is to now destroy our marriage laws."
Recent judicial decisions, like the U.S. Supreme Court's Lawrence v. Texas ruling striking down the Lone Star State's law against sodomy, have given momentum to homosexual activists intent on changing the legal definition of marriage. State judges in New Jersey and Massachusetts are expected to rule soon on whether to expand the traditional meaning of marriage to cover homosexuals.
None of this has escaped the notice of mainstream Americans, Hotmire noted.
"They're waking up," he said, "and they're saying, 'Look, we cannot sit by and allow the judicial activists to take over the country.' "
The FMA, already introduced in the House of Representatives, needs a two-thirds vote in the House and the Senate; then at least 38 state legislatures have to ratify it.

At the website Girl Love Garden, pedophiles claim to be on a quest for social acceptance of their sexual preferences. The website celebrates "the emancipation of girls of all ages and 'girl love,' in general."
But "boy lovers" need not feel left out. At the Free Spirits website, visitors learn that "boylovers have not chosen of their free will to become so."
Julie Posey, a self-described "cyber-crime fighter" runs the website Pedowatch.org. Posey's website claims that "since 1996, she has passed on hundreds of tips to law enforcement involving child sexual predators who use the Internet as a tool to gain access to children who are later sexually assaulted and in rare instances murdered."
