1. Yes, Zell is probably the best maybe only conservative Democrat of note left.

Lieberman is called 'conservative' but that really means he is an old-style Liberal Democrat who is still a civil individual and not as hardcore Leftist trashtalker like Dean or Sharpton.

2. A candidacy like his would normally go nowhere in the Democrat field. but since G W Bush is unopposed, it would be possible for GOP crossovers to give him a boost and he'd be one conservaitve in a field with 10 liberals, he'd stand out .. but that would self-limit him to 25% support in the party - snowball's chance of getting nominated.

3. In the general election, he would lose the support of many core Democrats, it might boost the Greens. it would generally mix things up differently. Against a weak or Liberal GOP candidate (eg think Colin Powell or a RINO like Chritine Whitman) he might pull in conservative voters but against G W B??? hard to see him making too much of a dent.

He's known as Zig Zag Zell in Georgia for his flip flop on major issues.

When he ran for Governor he ran as an "outsider". However, he was Lt. Governor at the time, had been for years.

I called his office many times during the Lott fiasco in December/January for his lack of a voice while the National Democratic party was calling all white Georgians racist. His office was rude, condescending and typical democrats. I was outraged.

Sen. Miller is an educated man but speaks as if he were Jed Clampet.

All that said, I've always liked the guy but never could bring myself to vote for him in any election mainly because of the (D).

Zell Miller editorial.... http://www.freerepublic.com/forum/a3b1b09447b8f.htm

Don't forget, this is the man who went to the 1992 DNC and said of Bill Clinton "He feels your pain!" He's also the person who introduced James Carville to Bill Clinton.

Don't be fooled... Zell Miller is a Democrat and always will be one.

Judge N. Sanders Sauls(D) of the Floriduh recount fiasco. He doesn't have any political experience, belives in the rule of law, has integrity, and the Dems hate him. Perfect!

Exactly.

I'm glad to see Zell leave the Senate.

Now, I'd rather see someone like Zell instead of Ted Kennedy, but Mac Collins will be much better.

Ex-Senator Sam Nunn, another Georgian, is a good conservative. He left the Senate at the height of his popularity and never gave a reason, at least not one I heard. He would have been a good president. Remember, most of the old southern politicians were conservatives and southern Republicans were non-existent. It is just that most conservatives switched to the Republican Party after Kennedy and LBJ.

Why are you trying so hard to find any Democrat that is acceptable to conservatives. Are you afraid to give up your security blanket of being a Democrat, yourself?

Are you finding the lure of being a conservative so strong because we are so much fun and actually aren't the knuckle draggers you were taught by you family that we were?

Exercise you own will, your rugged individualism and your inate desires for independence and renounce ALL political parties, or at least use them instead of them using you and be yourself as a constitutional conservative that believes that true liberty still resides in the principals sent to us by the Magne Carte, Free Market Capitalism and the US Constitution, to this very day!

Free yourself from the likes of John Garamendi and Zell Miller. They are fossils of the Democrat Party. Be like Reagan and let the Party leave you and experience the exorcism and feel the evil dependency leave your mind and body!!!

Live a little in the time you have left and help us restore the great American traditions and taboos along with the power of freedom in a productive society... Just do it!!!

>>Zell Miller is 100% done with politics when his Ga Senate term ends.

Agreed. He is too old for a Presidential race, and really seems to just want to retire in Young Harris, which he deserves, and I believe he will do.

A much better choice for Zell's replacement than Johnny Isaakson, who is a bit of a RINO.

I am not sure. He still looks pretty young but he must at least be in his middle sixties. Maybe we should Google him. :-)

Sam Nunn graduated from law school in 1962 and he served as a United States Senator from Georgia for 24 years (1972-1996). That should make him about what I said, sixty something. I thought he had been gone from the Senate longer but I now remember he left midway through the Clinton years. I thought then he saw the stench beneath that administration and decided he wanted nothing to do with it. He is still a good man but a loyal Democrat.

#28 - by SierraWasp

At a later time, when I have time, I will have to spend more time responding to #28.
For now, in haste, let me try:

* - When the Dems went off the deep end, many Dems left and went to the GOP or Independent.

They didn't make a stand? They just ran? Is that the American way? If the socialists, etc. - if they want to be wrong, and get extreme and wierd, - WHY don't they change their ways, or why don't THEY leave the Democrat Party? (Maybe we are seeing that as they go to the Greens..?) Why should I leave the Dem Party? (IN the general election) I know how to find the conservative candidates on the ballot!

I'm sure you've heard, "you can run, but you can't hide". I expect that there are many ex-Dem who are disappointed in thier GOP experience. Better to have stayed and fought. Time for ex-Dems to consider returning and finding good conservative candidates to rally around & work with.

* - In my youth, (on several issues) I was as about as 'liberal' as they get. Since I heard a better way, and changed my perspective, so can - many - others.

It is my impression that there is a significant percentage who are tired of the 'liberal' / socialist policies of the Dems, and are ready to change. We won't really know, until we try.

* - The GOP is being distracted, because the Dems are - 1.so strong, and/or 2. so convincing.

If there is some 'movement', the Dems changing on some key issues, - then the Dems benefit, and it take pressure off the GOP, and the GOP can be more true to their values; America & California will benefit.

I'm in a hurry. This may not be the perfect and complete answer, I'll try another time if I must. Let's stay in touch.

Ok... until next time, I'm trying to understand what you are saying. I got so disgusted at the intramural kneeing each other in the groin within the (R) Party, that I simply had to withdraw my support.

But when I look over at what's going on in the (D) Party I'm horified at the phony collectivism and the defending of despicable poverty pimping and despicable characters like Clinton, Gore & Davis, et al... It makes one wonder if there's ANY socially redeeming value left in such an organization. They're acting like zhombies or something.

Ok. Explain it to me later when you have more time. Because I sure think Jack Kennedy today, would almost make a double of Dubya, in policy matters, if not in family life. Funny, but much of Dubya's policies remind me of Nixon's to some extent, too.

Were you ever a Reagan Democrat? Or are you too young to remember those times?

>> 1. Who would be a good conservative Democrat candidate for President? <<

1. Zell Miller is NOT a conservative Democrat, he is a CENTRIST Democrat. We haven't had a "conservative" Democrat in the Senate for several decades. The way they voted in lockstep during Bubba's impeachment and other issues like McCain-Feingold should have made freepers aware of that fact. "Conservative" Democrats are not pro-abortion, McCain-Feingold luvin', FDR worshipping, Clinton apologists. Zell's ACU rating last year was 47%, which puts him right down in the middle. He's the Dem version of Colin Powell, a mushy centrist. In order to find a "conservative" Democrat to be the equilivent of a Chaffee style liberal Republican, we'd have to have a Democrat who REGULARLY votes with the GOP around 60-70% of the time. (Chaffee, Jeffords, vote with the RATs 60-70% of the time)

>> 2. Would Sen. Zell Miller be a good conservative candidate for the Democratic nomination for President of the United States <<

The Dems will not nominate a conservative or EVEN a CENTRIST RAT for President for the reasons previously stated in the Arnold for Gov threads. The RINOs have much more influence in the GOP than the DINOs have in the DNC. RINOs insist on running liberal Republicans entirely in the west coast and New England, and even get away with nominating RINOs in swing states (Specter in PENN.) and sometimes conservative states (Warner in VA) The Democrats, on the other hand, have the ideological grassroots in MUCH firmer control of THEIR party and will NEVER nominate a DINO for statewide office, even a "conservative" states. Democrats don't go around saying "Gee whiz, Kent Conrad is TOO LIBERAL to win in a stauch conservative state like North Dakota, we better nominate someone who is pro-life and pro-gun." Doesn't happen.

OCCASSIONALLY a pro-gun or pro-life rat (conservative on that ONE issue) will be nominated statewide, but ONLY if he was APPOINTED to office (Zell), ran unopposed in the primaries (Casey), or had about six identical liberals splitting the leftist vote in the Dem primary (Poshard). This explains why we have 6-7 RINOs in the Senate who regularly "break" with the party leadership, but only 1-2 RATs in the Senate who break with THEIR leadership. Miller is a fluke who ended up being much more conservative than he was as governor. If they had known that, they would have NEVER appointed him.

A conservative RAT running being nominated nationwide? When pigs fly.
