U.S. Says Effort Has Halted Desert Deaths
By Kevin Sullivan
Washington Post Foreign Service
Monday, September 22, 2003; Page A20
MEXICO CITY, Sept. 21 -- Mexican officials are strongly protesting a new U.S. program that flies illegal immigrants caught in the Arizona desert hundreds of miles to Texas, where they are returned to Mexico.
U.S. officials say the program, begun Sept. 8, is a humanitarian measure aimed at preventing returned migrants from simply attempting to cross again into Arizona, where many have died of exposure. Instead, U.S. officials are flying them as far east as Laredo, Tex., into more populated and less dangerous sections of the border.
The U.S. Embassy here said the pilot program, which concludes at the end of this month, has worked. Nearly 2,400 illegal immigrants have been taken from Arizona to Texas, and since the program began, no deaths have been reported in a desert that has averaged more than one death a day in recent years.

Officials in Mexican cities along the Texas border have also complained that dumping thousands of immigrants in their communities will be expensive and disruptive. They say the plan offers no long-term solution to illegal immigration and will strain their already limited budgets for sending immigrants back to their home towns. But it's OK to dump them by the millions in US cities all over America. How ironic is this situation and blatantly hypocritical of them to say this.

Expulsion-program. Does this mean no more refried beans?
Seriously, if libs gave a damn, they'd help us make Mexico a real, economically-vibrant nation, instead of aiding them in blaming everything on U.S.
Mexico has lots of natural resources, not least its hard-working people, who if freed from the nanny-state of socialism, wouldn't need to take these hidieous risks.

why not fly them back to mexico...to an isolated airstrip in Chiapas. Probably expensive, some would say cruel...
But maybe criminals would get the point that breaking American law can be a real pain in the @ss
The more weakness we exhibit, the more they will exploit us.

How come these attorneys for the immigration advocacy groups do not set up offices in Mexico and help the Mexicans navigate thru the immigration paperwork to come to the US legally? Why hasn't any GOP politician challenge them on this issue?

I guess these Mexican officials are "racists", like everyone else who points out the obvious.

Mexicans in this country illegally are lucky that the US government sends them back to Mexico humanely. They're lucky they aren't shot trying to cross the border. They should STFU and stay in their miserable cesspool of a third world country and try and drag it out of feudalism into the 21st century. Miserable dogs.
To: One_American
Mexican idiots.
A person could pull out their hair with hypocracy so blatant.
Maybe the United States should send a BILL to the Mexican Government for the education expenses related to the children of illegal immigrants, and any social service afforded by the use of the Mexican consular "matricula" card, and highway fees associated with any Mexican citizen holding an American driver's license.

Hispanic-immigrants are screwed, because at this time both parties and the president of mexico are more interested in playing political fotball with them, rather than actually fixing mexico's economy.
if i were them i'd at least cast a vote for repub's and buy into America, rather than buying the empty victim-pandering promises of the libs.

Makes sense! The Mexican offical in the area where the wetback crosses is the one that gets the cut from the coyote and/or wetback, no matter how many tries it takes. If the wetback crosses successfully at another point, the goberment official at the first point has to send the official at the second point the wetback's crossing fee (less "handling" fees specified by Mexican law).
When is our government going to realize the great danger we face from Mexican wetbacks and foreign terrorist who cross the easy border and do something about it. SEAL THE BORDER; SEND THEM HOME. DO WHAT THE CONSTITUTION REQUIRES YOU TO DO AND WHAT YOU SWORE TO DO!!!

It looks to me like breaking American law is no problem for 10 million illegal Mexicans. They're aided and abetted by the Mexican government, our own government, the ACLU, the Republicans, the Democrats, etc, etc. Did I leave anyone out?

We treat these illegals much more humanely than the Mexicans treat the Central Americans that invade Mexico's southern border. I don't think the Mexicans give their invaders welfare and free education. Why aren't they considered racist?

And make them walk off the back ramp at 12,000' AGL with no chute. A couple of those flights, and the problem would be cured.

As I have said before, this is only a half-ass'ed answer!
They should be transported to the furthest reaches of Mexico, the tip of the Mex. side of the Baja gulf at the least.
I am sick of hearing these illegal invaders refered to as "hard working", "undocumented workers", "migrants", "refugee's" etc.
Hard working? Then let them do the hard work of correcting their own corrupt and despotic government instead of merely exploiting the sacrifices of OUR fore-fathers!
I know, they are too fond of the benifits of socialism to actually force any significant changes, it's so much easier to sneak into the U.S., take a good job from an American, and send enough money back to allow the relatives to bribe their way to the top of the local dung hill!
So long as WE continue to make it more appealing to keep the status quo going in Mex. than to force a change nothing will get any better on either side of the border!
So long as we continue to allow V.Fox to export his political opposition, then profit off the money they send back home, WE are implicated in the continued Mex. tragedy.
Mex. has plenty of natural resources, there is no rational reason for Mex. to remain the ****-hole it is!
Sealing the border might be painful for some on both sides temporarily, but it is the only right thing to do in the long run, for the good of both countries!

To see how much the Mexican officials really care about the illegals, our officials only need to say "oil for illegals" and they start showing their true colors. No --- they don't care one drop of oil about these people.

Seriously, I would prefer that they be flown back to Mexico City.
Mexico is one of the leading petroleum producers in the world, and an industrialized country that sells its primary products for dollars on the world market. There is no reason at all that they should be unable to absorb their own population. There is no reason they should be unable to pay their work force more than $1 to $2 an hour. Their products sell on the world market for dollars, same as everyone else.
If access to cheap labor is the supposed secret of our economic success, why is Mexico unable to prosper when it is the source of that cheap labor?
Hundreds of thousands of Mexicans leave every year, a calamity of biblical proportions, and no one questions it. Its accepted as being just part of life, like the weather.

There is no reason they should be unable to pay their work force more than $1 to $2 an hour.Exactly. Some people believe in "zero-sum" economics and think that there are a set amount of jobs, a set amount of middle class lifestyles and that we must "share" ours with the less fortunate. But Mexico could easily have a high standard of living --- it competes with Great Britain in number of billionaires! It just needs to make a few important changes, denationalize the oil for one ---- they've got huge oil reserves. 80% of the population should not be living in severe poverty.
The other thing --- becoming more and more a parasite economy is only making things worse. In states like Zacatecas, 50% of the population now is living in the USA sending money back to hold the other 50% above water until they too can make it over here. Mexico is becoming like one great inner-city ---totally dependent on money coming in from the outside but no investments being made.

Based on the blatant interference in our domestic affairs by the Mexican government, to say nothing of border patrol officers coming under fire from our good neighbors to the south, my vote would be to send thousands of gringos over the border into Mexico.
Only these gringos would uniformed and armed. In that event, the only thing the Mexicans would do real quick would be to surrender and sue for peace.
That won't happen. Nor does it need to. Those thousands of troops need only position themselves at the border. That'll get Mexico's attention and end the careers of many a coyote.
Unfortunately, Washington seems indifferent to the porousness of our southern border, costing it credibility in the War on Terror, and leaving Americans vulnerable to Islamo-fascist penetration.
