ALS rate in young Gulf war vets unusually high

DALLAS — An unusually high number of young Gulf war veterans have been diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's disease, two studies show.

A study published in yesterday's issue of Neurology shows that veterans of the 1991 war younger than 45 have developed amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a fatal motor neuron disease, nearly three times more frequently than normal.
