Bring every man and women in the armed forces, line em up side by side with survallience aircraft along the Tex/Mex border and you still won't stem the tide of immigrants.
Forget it. Too many miles to cover.

Finally - someone grew some balls.
Now, if choking off the terrorist flow is good enough for us, why does the U.S. slap Israel up side the head for wanting to do the same thing with the Hamas?

I've been wondering when this would happen (assuming DEBKA is right, a big assumption). That's a long and porous border but it's about time we sealed it. I'm hoping hot pursuit into Syria is allowed.

That is a pretty long border to close with a few troops. I wish we knew how they were "closing" it so we could do the same along our southern border.

meanwhile...
The US-Mexican border is still WIDE-OPEN!
Gotta keep that dirt cheap labor flowing over the border to depress wages and steal jobs from law-abiding and tax-paying Americans!
This shows where President Bush's priorities are, eh?
It sure as h*ll isn't American workers or jobs in this country!

Well, The Syrian border is approximately 400 miles in length with just a few main crossing points.
The US Mexican border is 2,100 miles long and has populated areas all along it and many crossing points.
It's not an excuse but there is a large difference in scale and scope.

"REASON: TOO MUCH MONEY WOULD BE LOST BY LOSING THE CHEAP LABOR"Actually that cheap labor already exists. That labor used to be performed by teenagers and young folks starting out.
Financially it is very expensive to use illegal labor. The income is not taxed and the profits are all sent back to Mexico.

"Looks like Rummy has had it with playtime.." Say what you want about Rumsfeld, but he has been exactly what we needed and at just the right time for Iraq.
The only thing I disagree with him on is the size of our active duty forces. His hands are tied on this one though, it's politically incorrect to increase our military size - especially right before 2004.
It's gonna have to happen though. Our reserve forces are taking a beating - they were never intended to carry out long-term (e.g., over one year activation) operations such as will be necessary in Iraq.

"Bring every man and women in the armed forces, line em up side by side with survallience aircraft along the Tex/Mex border and you still won't stem the tide of immigrants. Forget it. Too many miles to cover."That's not the American attitude!
You are also wholly incorrect.
The solution lays not just in placing fences and roadblocks in the path of illegal immigrants. The solution lays in increasing the consequences and cost to any illegal caught crossing the border.
For instance: Every illegal would be detained in US Border detention camps for a minimum of 1 year. During that time they will be used to build and maintain fences, roadbuilding and trach pickup. The cost for detaining those illegals will be billed to the Mexican Government.
If we applied serious consequences to the illegals then a fence would not even be necessary.
Now CUT OUT that losing mentality! You're an American, now act like it!

"And votes. Don't forget the votes." Political formula for success in America:
1. Keep the borders open.
2. Keep the flow of cheap illegal labor into the U.S. gushing - flooding if at all possible.
3. Keep business happy with #2.
4. Bring in as many votes as you can from Mexico.
5. Get as many votes from Mexico as possible on your ticket by passing as much special interest legislation as you can without going to jail or having your house burned down (e.g., extending driver's licenses to any and all illegal immigrants).
6. Lie through your teeth and insist you vehemently oppose any of the above when interviewed on local or national televsion or media.

This is NOT meant to really close the border.
It is another trap we are baiting.
When the trap is 'sprung' we have an excuse to attack Syria and REALLY clean out the snake pit.
All part of the plan from day one, occupy the ENTIRE mideast if necessary until all resistance is neutralized.
The Brits and Russians don't know how to deal with the Islamist radicals.
We DO.

I am in no hurry to go there either...
On the primary subject... I think sealing the Syrian Border is long overdue...
On the Mexican issue... I have problems with illegal immigration but I am realistic in accepting that we can not have it both ways... We want the cheap labor but we don't them here after 6:00 in the evening... We want them to watch our kids will we go make six figures but we don't want them to ever have a shot at six figures...
Been to Tijuana just once and that was enough but I need to say that we can not have our cake and eat it too...

On that one I agree... It is a vicious circle because their government has no incentive to make life better back in Mexico....
The other valid point is that breaking the law for economic gain and then demanding instant gratification on health benefits and other services is going way too far... It is the lack of social mobility and "take the money and run' that I see which causes hostility...

If we applied serious consequences to the illegals then a fence would not even be necessary.
That won't happen until there is a change in attitudes in the American judiciary.
One of my friends is in charge of U.S. immigration enforcement in our corner of the Pacific Northwest. Last night, I asked him how things were going in his line of work and he said there was a greater emphasis on catching and deporting illegals starting with the ones considered to be a crimminal element.
The problem, he said, was that after they were flow all the way back to San Diego and deported to Tijuana, they would be back in the U.S. in a couple of days.
"Well, there is your problem right there", I said. I pointed out that, when rangers capture a troublesome bear at a Yellowstone campground, they don't release the bear just outside the campground parking lot. They helicopter the bear's @ss as deep into the middle of nowhere as they possibly can before releasing him.
The solution, I said, would be to deport these people with flights to southern Mexico. That would force them to travel the length of Mexico just to get back to the Rio Grande. They're not going to be able to do that in a couple of days.
He replied that the INS had tried that. One group was put on a flight and released in southern Mexico somewhere around Oaxaca.
Shortly thereafter, the INS was sued by "immigrant's rights group" claiming that the INS had violated "civil rights" by flying them into southern Mexico. The judge must have agreed because the INS stopped the practice.

The solution lays in increasing the consequences and cost to any illegal caught crossing the border. Now you're talking about a judicial problem. The ACLU and it's ilk will be in court the moment stricter legislation is recommended. We're talking about an institutional judicial problem here.
Start here before you waste money on manpower.

In reality, if you want to stop this problem, start fining companies $50,000 per day, per illegal. Make it mandatory that all fines are paid within 14 days of issuance. I gurantee you after some good INS raids and millions in fines, the problem will return to Mexico and out of our nation.
