Sorry, I let out a big laugh when I read this. I was told my paternal Grandmother wanted to name me "Bruno"....
My friends from Zaire are name Edwine, Albert, Gabriel, Theodore and Jacques.
The kids quickly became Gabby and Teddy, but Jacques (age 2) remained, stubbornly, Jacques. When Edwine gave birth to a little girl, they named her "Bonnie", after an American Christian lady who showed them great kindness...it's Scottish and means "good."
The point of naming a child after someone you respect and admire is a wish for them to emulate that person in life. Hense, my daughter is named Margaret, and is Maggie for short. When she was old enough to ask, I explained about Maggie Thatcher.
In most Catholic families, the children are named for Saints. I married into a family that uses the mother's maiden name as a middle name. My future grandchild, if male, will be stuck with "Theophilus", due to the Dad's family tradition, or Strange, if they choose Mom's family tradition.
Frankly, I like Buckwheat better!
A friend of mine who worked at an employment agency told me that they used to bypass the resumes that had obviously black names.
LOL...new one
He's a distant cousin to another FReeper's friend, Hugh Jardon.
His brother, Haywood Jablomi, has been out of work for years.
"...and if I ever have a son, I think I'm gonna name him Bill, or George; anything but Sue. I still hate that name!..."
Sorry, couldn't help but think of that song when I read your post.
We're all gonna miss John an awful lot.
I won't abide the mentality, and it's prominent in caucasian populations now, of giving God's children names that sound as if they're corruptions of JRR Tolkien. Mrs. Churchjack and I named our first li'l blessing together Joe, with tradition as one consideration. Freekin' Chazzdyns and Madisons poppin' up--in our strictly blue collar circle. It's embarrassing.
Of course, we could cave to pressure and call him Jeaux. Then he'd fit right in...
