Mr. Schwarzenegger Gets a Pass

New York Times ^ | October 5, 2003 | KATHA POLLITT
Posted on 10/04/2003 10:58 PM PDT by calcowgirl

On Thursday, The Los Angeles Times published a 3,700-word front-page article in which six women accused Arnold Schwarzenegger of humiliating them with crude pawings and taunts. At the last minute, will the Barbarian be turned back at the gates? Don't bet on it.

For the charges to sway the recall at this late date, it will take more than the ad campaign being mounted by women's groups. Politicians and the press would have to treat the story as a major scandal with potentially devastating consequences for California, the nation, morality and Western civilization. One wonders what would happen if even a fraction of the energy expended on Bill Clinton's sex scandals was applied to Mr. Schwarzenegger.

Instead, reaction as been strangely subdued. Thursday night's "Hardball" was typical. Chris Matthews, who chose the curiously sweet, rather affectionate word "fondling" to describe Mr. Schwarzenegger's behavior, seemed mostly interested in getting Senator Dianne Feinstein to compare the actor's grotesqueries to Mr. Clinton's affair with Monica Lewinsky....

Arnold is No Bill Clinton

Now that nearly a dozen women have stepped forward to accuse California gubernatorial front-runner Arnold Schwarzenegger of groping them, Democrats and their media friends are brimming with comparisons to Bill Clinton.

But are the allegations against Schwarzenegger and Clinton at all similar? Not really. In fact, they're not even close.

Nothing that Arnold stands accused of comes remotely close to the charge by Juanita Broaddrick, who was subjected to a thorough FBI investigation and vetted by NBC News for a full five weeks before the network would even consider broadcasting her account of a sexual assault by Mr. Clinton.

The encounter, by the way, left Broaddrick not merely humiliated, as so many of Arnold's accusers say there were, but, instead, bruised and bleeding....

PARTY TIME - California's New Trend: Big-Tent Republicans

New York Times ^ | October 5, 2003 | John Micklethwait And Adrian Wooldridge
Posted on 10/04/2003 11:07 PM PDT by calcowgirl

SAN FRANCISCO — In the latest "Terminator" movie, Arnold Schwarzenegger plays a robot who returns from the future to save a grand old civilization from chaos. In Tuesday's California recall election Mr. Schwarzenegger stands a chance of transforming a grand old political party, not just in California but possibly on the national stage as well. That prospect exhilarates national Republican leaders, even as some acknowledge that it carries risks as well.

The election goes beyond the prospect of salvaging Republican pride in Ronald Reagan's backyard. For many Republicans, a Schwarzenegger victory also carries an even more tantalizing promise with it: "rebuckling" the Republican Sun Belt, so that a revitalized libertarian Western wing balances the party's currently dominant moralistic Southern wing....

11:30 PM PDT, October 4, 2003

Four more women have come forward to say that Arnold Schwarzenegger fondled, spanked or touched them in incidents they said took place as recently as 2000 and as long ago as 1979.

In all, 15 women have now accused the Republican candidate for governor of grabbing or groping them. On the campaign trail Saturday, Schwarzenegger denounced as a "puke campaign" news reports that he has behaved abusively toward women.....
