“Saddam We Love You!” - What Germans are being told about the Iraq conflict.

“Saddam We Love You!”
What Germans are being told about the Iraq conflict.

By Michael Fumento

Anybody who's been to Iraq lately knows that the gloom and despair in our major newspapers concerning the conflict is low-grade liverwurst. Yet as I recently discovered when I picked up a copy of the Financial Times Deutschland on a trip, our papers look like Pentagon propaganda compared to what the Germans are reading. Such reporting may go a long way towards explaining European opposition to our Iraqi efforts.

While the entire first page of the "Agenda" section was devoted to what was presented as straight reporting, "agenda" was clearly the proper description. Titled, "Saddam, wir lieben dich!" ("Saddam, we love you!"), the words might as well have been from the German reporter, not the Iraqis who were allegedly shouting them.

The difference between an op-ed and biased "straight reporting" is that the opinion writer says what he thinks while the reporter scrounges up others willing to support his position. (Let's not even entertain the possibility that some quotes may be fabricated.) So it was here.

In the city of Fallujah from which the story was reported, among 200,000 residents not one could be found who did not have utter contempt for Americans or didn't think of Saddam as a reincarnation of the prophet Mohammed with a bit of Santa Claus tossed in for good measure.

Given the chance, "I'd have killed every American who passes my way," says one Iraqi in pull-quote. Compared to the British, "The Americans are completely uncivilized," read the other pull quote.

The Financial Times Deutschland also found American troops guilty of the ultimate war crime: insensitivity. It noted that when U.S. soldiers accidentally kill an Iraqi, as is inevitable in urban fighting in which the enemy wears no uniform, they pay the families compensation. But "$1,500 for a brother, that's a humiliation," grumbles a young man in a Baghdad supermarket.

Obviously no amount of money can adequately compensate for a human life. On the other hand, there's nothing in the article about compensation from Saddam's supporters, even though they've proved themselves far more adept at killing their own civilians than slaying Coalition troops.

Blame on the Americans even extends to winning the war. There's no mention of polls showing the great majority of Iraqis are glad Saddam has fled or hidden. The reporter picked Fallujah precisely because it was a Saddam power base, one of the few cities where he spent the money he stole from the rest of the nation. "Here," we're told, "almost everyone awaits Saddam's return."

"I'd like 100 Saddams and no Americans," cries the owner of "the best Kebab restaurant in Iraq," according to our investigative reporter-turned-gourmet. "There is no freedom so long as there's an American occupation of Iraq." The reporter apparently sees no irony in placing this quote immediately after saying the city was a major recruiting center for Saddam's secret police, a virtual carbon copy of Hitler's Gestapo.

Americans are even held responsible for the actions of the Iraqi government. A building contractor complained bitterly that an order he received from the government before the war ended wasn't paid for. "The Americans drove off the administration officials, but refuse to be responsible for my damage. Those are the sons of a pig." Perhaps we should have left the government intact just long enough to make sure it paid all of its bills.

There is simply nobody in all Fallujah who does not want all the Americans roasted slowly on a spit, according to the Financial Times Deutschland. "Mothers explain to their children that the Americans are monsters," we're told. Had the reporter bothered to interview the cats, dogs, and lizards, presumably he would have gotten a similar impression.

Ah, but the U.S. will pay for such crimes! "America will experience their second Vietnam," crows an Iraqi. Relief for the oppressed peoples of Iraq is at hand! The activities of the disparate groups will become coordinated, Financial Times Deutschland assures us. "We have enough money and weapons to struggle for years against the Americans," says an unidentified Iraqi. Thousands of young men stand ready to die for the country and "the great leader Saddam Hussein." Many "men from Fallujah are ready to die to restore their lost honor and pride."

Hmm...Is that why their typical modus operandi is to set off a bomb in the road by remote control and then, as a minstrel from a Monty Python movie put it, "Bravely taking to [their] feet [they] beat a very brave retreat."

When three shells hit a U.S. military compound, you'd think from press reports it was the Viet Cong infiltration of the U.S. embassy compound during the Tet Offensive. Actually, it was more like kids tossing snowballs at passing cars. The attackers again bravely fled, leaving nine precious shells unfired while those they did fire bounced harmlessly off the building because the terrorists were too hasty or scared to aim their shots.

The courageous and savvy VC these are not.

Curiously, not only does the German reporter make no effort to deny that those attacking U.S. troops are by no means strictly indigenous, as some American media outlets have insisted, he repeatedly emphasizes the presence of fighters from Saudi Arabia and other countries and even labels them terrorists.

The purpose, apparently, is to show that this is a pan-Islamic effort against which the U.S. cannot possibly prevail. "Everyone hates the Americans. Terrorists from neighboring states want Iraq to be a battleground in the war against American transformation," warns a policeman.

With another reporter, in another paper, this just might lead to the issue of whether the president is right when he says Iraq is now the main battlefield against terror.

The final lines of the article, in reference to a funeral for the eight Iraqi policemen who died in a crossfire between American troops and terrorists, speak for themselves. "The sad guests shoot in the air with their Kalashnikovs and swear revenge. 'Saddam, we love you!' cry the men. 'We will defend you with blood and steel.'"

Nobody needs three guesses as to why the French want to see our butts kicked. Germans, however, like us. But faced with Goebbels-like propaganda such as this, it's easy to see why they — and other Europeans similarly brainwashed — want nothing to do with our efforts to keep the Iraqi people free. Nor do they seem to realize that using Iraq as a terrorist magnet and killing ground makes it that much less likely they will attack targets in America, or more likely in Europe itself.

Someone tell me again why our mainstream (inter)national press - by intentionally, selectively reporting negative news with intent to undermine our war effort - is not guilty of both war crimes and crimes against humanity?

Interesting, although not unexpected. What amazes me more is that this is being reported in the country run by Gerhardt Schroeder . . . the same Gerhardt Schroeder who is so high on everyone's sh*t list, he would kill for any sort of positive relationship from G. W. Bush.

By the same token, Schroeder has made a patsy out of Bush twice before and Bush would be well advised to keep him at arm's length. Schroeder will turn on Bush in a New York Minute if he thinks there is political gain from doing so.

Germany supporting genocide and terror. What a surprise.

Perhaps Germany (several times the enemy of the people of the United States of America)
should invade France again (another POS-enemy of the people of the United States of America).

Go ahead, Germany. It is your way and this time you might get away with it.

Hillary's very popular in Germany. Her book and Michael Moore's are German favorites.

"America should seek "a secure and solid foundation" for relations with Europe, instead of "relying only upon our [U.S.] military strength." .. "for eight years we were on the right course to a globalized and integrated world - which is coming, one way or the other." ...Not only is a "globalized and integrated world" inevitable, it is a foreign policy priority of the Democratic Party...Der Spiegel concludes: As Europeans become more familiar with Clinton and her views, their impact will be felt as they bring money and influence to her or a like politician's campaign...The socialist European expectation will be that a Democratic victory will bring into power a U.S. government more to the liking of one-world European politicians. ~ Hillary Clinton Der Spiegel interview, June 17, 2003.

This article seems to imply that the Germans are easily riled up and manipulated; that some articulate leader could easily whip the masses into a frenzy and lead them down a destructive path.

LOL...like that could ever happen....

While in Europe, Clinton attacked U.S. President George Bush, his policies, and called into question the validity of his election.

While asserting her support for Bush in Afghanistan and Iraq, Sen. Clinton criticized present U.S. policy in Europe, and questioned the Bush administration's use of intelligence information.

Clinton stated that she stands for the "same policies" as her husband, former impeached U.S. President Bill Clinton.

It is apparent that der Ms. Clinton has gone global with her campaign for US president. Both Clintons admired Adolph Hitler’s leadership capabilities which included the gassing of thousands and the use of slaves, minorities primarily, to run his war time factories. I find it inexplicable how a person of Jewish heritage, could in good faith vote for a Clinton as their agenda is the same as Hitler’s for America. They, the Clintons, are at heart Dictators, not democratic Americans. If Mrs. Clinton were to gain the White House the For Sale sign would once again be on all privately held lands in the US and the White House.

Old EU is diminishing in size and wealth under socialism, but Mrs. Clinton doesn’t stop there, she will link up with the inept UN, give them millions of American taxpayer $$ and make Bill the UN secretary...a worst scenario than the holocaust if you ask me!

Europeans are second only to Arabs when it comes to being easily demagogued. Their minds are thoroughly managed by their socialist, America-hating media, yet they think we're the ones who have been duped. It reminds me of Chomsky's theory that private media is more interested in and more effective at mass manipulation of the public than the enlightened media enterprises of the disinterested state. When you're dealing with socialists, everything is upside down.

Having lived in Germany for 10 years now...I can attest to the fact that Germans are manipulated on a daily basis and over 70 percent cannot think for themselves. Its a educational thing...they push technical knowledge for the bulk of society with very little taught in history or geography. Everyone counts on these magazines or the 8pm news to ensure they are kept updated on the world. The typical German is usually shocked when I can counter their argument without using any news from the prior evening newscasts. They always want to dispute facts unless its on the 8pm news show.

Ugh, Chomsky. He's the one who swore up and down that the Killing Fields of Cambodia were a CIA inspired lie and that 2,000,000 peasants did NOT get slaughtered. He insisted this till finally the Khmer Rouge said, "No, we did it." Then he switched to (paraphrasing) "...oh... well... can you BLAME them? We practically FORCED them!"

If they didn't have Operation Iraqi Freedom, there would be some other issue utilized in the attempt to undermine and remove President Bush.

Now let a German say something about that.

Why do you think, we don't know our history?
I know what hapenned 60 years ago and I'm not proud of it.
Do you know, what has happended that time?

A leader of a big country is standing in front of his people and sais "To live in peace, we need war. Ev'ryone who doesn't join us is our enemy."
Who do you think said that? A little hint : it's been just a few years ago.

By the way... Hitler is dead - since 1945. (I know some American who really asked me how he's going - erm.. who said something about history?) What would an American call a German who sais "I love Germany!" ? Nazi - (which is an abreviation of national socialist) - So what should a German say about an American who sais he loves America? Hero??
- Sorry, I don't think so.

wizardos said that European are "naive, unsophisticated, reactionary, parochial, and easily manipulated"
Well do you know where Europe is?
There are American who think that Germany is somwhere beneath China. Hey, do you know that China is in Asia?

In Germany we say that American people are "naive, ignorant and easily manipulated - especcially by their tv" do you think that's true? I know some - but i also have met American wich aren't.

Next one, Onlivetogive : Sure, that we are "easily riled up and manipulated; that some articulate leader could easily whip the masses into a frenzy and lead them down a destructive path" ???
This time, we are the ones who said "Make love - not war".
By the way. I don't like Saddam but do you think, I'd love someone who tells me I've got to agree with his political aim's or I am his declared enemy?

Did I mention that worldwar II is over for almost 60 years? Why does everyone compare modern Germany to those people?

Don't you think, we all should have learned not to prejudice people by their religion or origin?

I know several hundrets of German people and only a few of them are unable to think for theirselves. But maybe I only know representatives of the 30 percent of intelligent German? - Do you believe that's possible?? I don't...

Next time you try to generalize the people of a country, please take the time to meet them. Promise, I'll do it, too.

Last thing concerning to your posts :

There is some text under my Post - buttons which sais
"Please: NO profanity, NO personal attacks, NO racism or violence in posts."

Are German people persons? - I'd say YES!
Is racism limited to skin colors or religions - I'd say NO!

please think about this before offencing people...

(Sorry if I made some mistakes - my English isn't the best; what about your German?)

Thank you for sharing.

The German troops working with ours in Afghanistan are doing an awesome job. I thank you for your country's support there.

The easily manipulated are the ones opposed to the war in Iraq. Our mainstream newsmedia and cultural elites as well as our professors are - by a vast majority - against the war and want America weakened on the world stage. They support the UN and the EU and international global socialism.

Why we don't.

Our little naive country has the longest lasting Constitution in world history.

Though our educators, lawmakers and information providers choose to ignore it, our Founding Fathers didn't just base our Constitution, our new nation on man's law.

Our troops are volunteering to risk their own lives in Iraq. They do it because they were awake on 9-11, and they love their families, their freedom, their neighbors - and, usually men and women courageous to serve - they love God. They fight to free a longsuffering people, and to rid the civilized world of some serious enemies of YOUR freedom, whether you believe this or not.

The press - America's press as well - has been lying to the world about the war from day one. I can prove this to you if you're truly interested. Click on my Freepname and scroll down to the bottom for a refresher course.

We are defending OUR freedom and OUR Constitution from those around the world who would break up the foundations of our nation - the strength and goodness of our communities - by breaking up families, and attacking our faith, and undermining our Constitution which limits the governments intrusion into our private lives (is supposed to, but relies on a moral population). Those who prefer the fantasy of a EU-UN socialist Utopia are fighting for something that has never existed outside the Garden of Eden - a stable, free population with MAN creating the rules, assuming self-restraint and morality can be enforced externally - and willingly, ignoring all history and human nature.

Back to Iraq, our troops and the Iraqi people are attempting a very difficult thing after decades of brutality. They are inviting those who would mass-murder innocents into the country where they are taking a stand for all of us, so that no nation or people is forced to appease a mighty and inhumane tyrant, or suffer the death of untold numbers of loved ones due to a WMD in unstable and cruel hands.

They are doing noble work by any decent humane standard. They deserve not only our support, but our gratitude. We can not repay our heroes for the sacrifices they are making for the world's freedom today.

By the way, my great grandfather was a Bavarian citizen until the 1850s when he moved to Pennsylvania, settled with other German-Americans and as a community they made America a better place - giving us not only pretzels and good beer and music, but the Conestoga wagon and the "Kentucky" long rifle.

And oh btw, ZOT!
