His Doc Holiday was as good as it gets in a modern Western.

Wholeheartedly agree.

>>I read hick accent as a Southern accent.

>Whew!!....I feel better. I thought for a second there that they might actually have hicks in New Mexico as well.

I'm sure they do. But what I was saying is I wonder how Val's 'Deliverance' imitation would go over if people heard him doing it. When the writer says hick, he is giving Kilmer a pass. If the writer accurately wrote that Kilmer was going around doing phoney Southern accents, it would make him seem sort of dopey.

Yeah, it takes a real genius to call 80% of your neighbors drunks and racists. You may think it's funny but I doubt if his neighbors do and that was my point. He may be accurate in his assessment but he's dumb for saying it to a reporter.

Hey guys, please send me any interesting NM links that can help me research the background for "Domestic Enemies," AKA "Kosovo, USA."

Um, like what kind of links?

Just FYI--the native New Mexicans whose families have been here since the conquistadors can't stand the illegals (mojados) or even legal Mexican immigrants from the Mexican border states.

While some NM pols would have you think otherwise, NM is NOT pro-immigration. We have our own culture and it is more Spanish than Mexican or Mestizo.... More european than New World up in Northern New Mexico.

I have heard the Nortenos referred to as 'Hispanic Hillbillies'. They have no love for Mexicans (or even 'Anglos') showing up. They've been here 450 years....

Do you live in NM? I'm in the research stage for my next novel, set mainly in NM, and I'm always looking for a link.

What kind of links? All kinds. Maps, newspapers, demographic studies, info on gangs, drug trade, famous ranches, local scandals, anything interesting.

I'm in the research phase, like a dry sponge looking for leaky faucets.

I think Tesque is a bit north of that ranch/resort is it not? ......

Yes it is, North and west....just North of Santa Fe ....that's what's confusing about this story. Maybe he moved since I saw him last....?? Who knows. Lots of folks are leaving the Santa Fe area as it's expensive and a crowded tourist trap these days IMHO.

Stay Safe !

Tell yer buddy to call Jim at Ranger Outreach in Pecos. He'll take care of that "infestation" problem for him. Above board ,good troop who does a great job of convincing those little POS wannabes to move to a different state.

Stay Safe !

Reminhd me to elaborate someday for you the time I crashed skiing in Taos and tore up my mouth and lost teeth and had to call my folks from the hospital...

...while I was supposed to be at Ole Miss in school...lol...spring of 79. My dad woulda killed me if it weren't for all the maxiofacial crap they had to do to my face. My binding broke while I was curled over doing a straight down the black diamond run Rebel Yell and I slammed over straight into the tips of my K2s at probably about 60. Only time ski patrol ever carried me off a slope.

I used to go to New Mexico every other year for the first 20 or so years of my life to Santa Fe. Loved it...been awhile.

Had Season pass to Sandia and Santa Fe when I was stationed in NM and did the Taos slopes ONCE !......Damn Death Trap that place.....as you well know by now.....:o) They may groom the slopes a bit better these days but I do not like anything in or around Taos. Skied Pianco Valo in the Dolomites during my wingnut tour at Aviano alot.

My favorite place in the world for sking was Crested Butte in CO.........I think they named the place for my Girl Friday (story I tell her friends anyway :o) as all the face plants she did all I saw was a crested butt !

Stay Safe !

Howdy stranger.

Yep...actually my buddy who was with me had to call my dad...lucky coward I!!!

My mom got him to chill but needless to say my ass was back at school asap for late registration with my face looking like that guy in Halloween..the movie. My old aunt from Santa Fe looked out for me too and ran cover for me. She was a matriarch of the family and had influence...still alive today her...living in her old adobe house off Canyon Rd at age 94.

I like Crested Butte too....I used to hike out of Gunnison to Uncompagrhe peak. Drove my Honda civic over the MT from Lake City to Silverton once in summer too....what fun.

I did Summit county a lot but my favorite was Sun Valley....so much open bowl skiing...which I loved.

I hear Whistler in BC is great for that too.

I tried to ski outside La Paz in Bolivia but the 18K altitude was too much. I lit up a Marlboro Red and about keeled over...no way I could even hold onto the ropelift...lol....we had a O tank in the Rover and I sucked on that thing for all I was worth all the way back to La Paz. About two years later I got really sick above Santa Marta Colombia above 16.5K for about two weeks looking for Tarona(sic) artifacts and my tolerance for high altitude has never been the same.

I last skiied at Sugar Mt NC with my girls a few years ago and had to walk 3/4ths of the way up the damed MT because their binding came loose and they just sat their and boo-hooed....bout killed me.

As I recall Canyon Road in Santa Fe....you went east back behind the old Mission by the little stream that runs thru old town and up and across the road where the Pink Adobe restaurant was and then it sort of just winded up the mountainside...lots of galleries and artists back then...sadly....I have not been in the Rockies since 80.
