A Party of Gropers
The American Prowler ^ | 10/7/2003 | George Neumayr

Posted on 10/06/2003 10:57:13 PM PDT by nickcarraway

"We need to change our party's image," said California Republican leaders, explaining their early enthusiasm for Arnold Schwarzenegger. If Schwarzenegger wins today, they will certainly get their wish. The face of the California Republican Party will become that of a Hollywood groper.

In the final days of the recall, Republican leaders became exactly what they opposed during the Clinton years: excuse-making, shoot-the-messenger shills for a law-breaking libertine. For the sake of one cheap win, Republicans embraced a Clintonian charmer credibly accused of groping up to 15 women (at last count). Where is the honor in this victory? Where even is the pragmatism? Is it "pragmatic" to solve one problem by creating a host of new ones?

The shilling for Schwarzenegger was Carvillian in its sophistry. Yes, the Los Angeles Times is biased; yes, the Democrats are hypocritical. Does it follow from that that all 15 women are lying? No. Even as Schwarzenegger in a roundabout manner conceded that groping took place, his Republican cheerleaders denied or downplayed the reports. This made them look dishonest, not his accusers.

Nor can Republicans console themselves that a crackpot allegation from someone like Rhonda Miller nullifies all of the allegations. Clinton used false charges to absolve himself of real charges.

After a surge of bad press, Schwarzenegger switched to a non-apology apology, relying on a vague denial of most of the charges while admitting to unspecified "playful" behavior. Apparently honesty wasn't polling as well as he and his advisers had hoped. On a television show this last weekend, Schwarzenegger, incredibly enough, promised to get to the bottom of his misdemeanors after he is elected governor. "I can get into all of the specifics and find out what is really going on," he said. "But right now I'm just really occupied with the campaign."

So his first act as governor, should he win, will be to investigate the charges against himself? That would cap a carnival-like recall. It is becoming clearer that by attempting to replace a corrupt pol with a corrupt actor California Republican leaders have not ended the state crisis but extended it. The press reports that Democratic Attorney General Bill Lockyer has "called on Schwarzenegger to submit to a state investigation of the sexual harassment accusations, regardless of if he is elected governor," and "Assemblyman Mark Leno, D-San Francisco, said he will introduce a bill he called 'Arnold's Law' to increase the penalties for sexually harassing women in the workplace."

If Lockyer gets his investigation and discovers what Schwarzenegger has already confessed -- that he has molested women -- what happens then? Schwarzenegger is subject to a recall? One irony of a Davis defeat is that the Democrats then get a chance for clean leadership while Republicans are saddled with a confessed sexual assailant.

This is the sham foundation on which state Republicans have chosen to build their party. It won't take long for it to collapse. If Schwarzenegger wins, Democrats needn't lament their loss. They have already won more than they realize. They so rattled Republicans with their conservatives-can't-win rhetoric that Republicans ran into the arms of a Kennedy-family groper who will do more damage to the Republican Party than they ever could. Incidentally, it is ironic that the country club Republicans who refuse to believe the Los Angeles Times report about Schwarzenegger completely believe the Times when it editorializes that conservative Republicans can't win in the state.

When Republicans behave and think like Democrats -- by operating according to the same dishonorable ends-justify-the-means calculus as Democrats, by treating crimes as "no big deal," by accepting the Clintonian coarsening of American politics, by playing dumb about real scandal, etc. -- the whole political system moves to the left, which is a victory for the very destructive liberalism that the Republican Party exists to arrest. It becomes not the solution to the problem but part of it.

The lesser-of-two-liberals politics the California GOP takes as gospel means liberals win every election. Ordinary Republicans may soon come to see this as a futile and shameful politics -- a politics which leads anti-Clinton Republicans to entrust the state to a Hollywood libertine they wouldn't trust with their wives.

In all fairness to Arnold, its the Democrats that began sliming when they ran out of issues. The Democrats were the one who told us sex was a private matter in the Time Of Clinton. Now its a serious charge and a Republican deserves to be thrown in prison for allegedly groping 15 women over the space of 30 years. George, spare me. I'm still waiting for Clinton to get long overdue justice.

I heard the first mention tonight on MRKABC from a Hollywood insider that Arnold raped at least four women, and then paid them off to keep quiet. Now I have no way of knowing if there is any truth to it, but if any of these women do a Juanita Broderick, man, are we opening a gaint can of trouble in California, not only for Arnold, but President Bush in 2004.

Even the NY Times has had to retract the George Butler Arhold admires hitler story.

If the allegations are true than he will be dealt with and not by a party that accpets such behavior (dems) but by us.

I submit the Trent Lott incident as a case in which we were willing/ risking to give up national power to preserve our principles.

Our principles not the LA and NY Times principles.

I am baffled beyond all belief how much credence so many feepers here have suddenly given the NY and LA Times.

I agree with this author, as I said in several posts yesterday. Republicans are now willing to hitch their wagons to a serial harrasser's star, as long as it will help them win one circus of an election? Ech..

The comparisons to the Clinton reactions are obvious. The charges that Democrats are hypocrites on this issue are true; but that is small consolation for the fact that Republicans are now thoroughly hypocritical as well. Great.

What a bunch of nonsense. I don't like some of Schwarznegger's politics, but here we have a guy with a family and a stable marriage coming out of the sewer of Hollywood and he pinched a few (I doubt 15) women on the butt over 30 years. This isn't even remotely similiar to what Clinton did.

Nobody was raped. Nobody lied under oath. Schwarznegger apologized, which is pretty classy in the face of what was an obvious smear. In fact it isn't even clear that anyone was even that bothered by it until it became politically expedient to be "outraged".

I am a Conservative, not a puritan. This is Anita Hill all over again and you are buying it hook, line, and sinker.

You want to bash Schwarz, do it on his Second Amendment shortcomings. Or come up with a smoking gun. Even Susan frigging Estrich says this is overblown, and you are wringing your hands and moaning like a liberal parakeet.

Hey, where's my ping? ;^)

Good article. I agree with it 100%. Thanks for posting it. I think Schwarzenegger has hoodwinked the people of California, in Clintonian fashion. If Arnie wins, California will get what they deserve.

This has been a very strange two months. Tonight, I found myself agreeing with Joe Scarborough's opening remarks on his show, about California having two bad choices tomorrow. Arnold or Boy Davis. He's right of course.

Vote your principles and vote your convictions. Vote for McClintock.

So, no one can run for political office who has ever done anything that might be considered improper at one time or other in their life? That's quite a litmus test, there! George W. Bush would certainly fail it.

Don't tell me the LA Slime's allegations establish a pattern of recent behavior, either. The most recent allegations against Schwarzenegger (the ones whose facts that can be most readily pinned down) are rapidly being discredited, even as we speak. See the recent ape woman thread.

Anyone who doesn't view these allegations with a very skeptical eye is rewarding the LA Slime for its disgusting last-minute mudslinging, and encouraging more of the same in the future.

This is no longer a mud slinging smear campaign but total character assasination. How can any male defend himself against the charge of rape/date rape from an anonymous source ? This is completely bullsh*t.

It is incumbent upon these women or gossips to specify names, dates, and places. Juanita Broderick and Kathleen Willey are a serious women with a compelling specific story. None of the Arnold accusations come close to their standards.

True. George Neumayr's concerns are correct but we don't do the state and the country a favor either if we help to legitimate the Clintonian "politics of personal destruction." Then only saints will run for public office.

This article is full of lies, half-truths, and exaggerations. Some of them include:

Schwarzenegger is "a law-breaking libertine"--to the best of my knowledge, no one has accused Schwarzenegger of breaking any law. For a fact, none of these women ever filed any criminal charge or civil claim.

Schwarzenegger's "Republican cheerleaders denied or downplayed the reports. This made them look dishonest"--Schwarzenegger himself stated that the specific allegations against him are not true. And there is nothing dishonest about downplaying boorish, but not illegal, behavior that occurred some time ago, inasmuch as it has little to do with how Schwarzenegger would lead the state if he is elected into office.

"Nor can Republicans console themselves that a crackpot allegation from someone like Rhonda Miller nullifies all of the allegations. Clinton used false charges to absolve himself of real charges"--So by refuting the only specific charges of recent boorish behaviour, Schwarzenegger is not "innocent," he is Clintonian? What kind of logic is that???

Schwarzenegger is "a corrupt actor"--what does any of this have to do with being 'corrupt'???

"Schwarzenegger has already confessed -- that he has molested women." Schwarzenegger is a "confessed sexual assailant."--Uh, no. There is a big difference between the kind of boorishly flirtatious conduct that it has been alleged Schwarzenegger engaged in, many years ago (where he stopped when a woman told him to do so), and "molesting" or "assailing" women.

The author of this article can fairly gripe that Schwarzenegger is not as conservative as he could or should be. But to use the kind of lies and exaggeration set forth above is itself very--well, Clintonian.

Arnold does have a character flaw. With people like him, it usually shows up in their policies and how they conduct themselves while in office. Under other circumstances, I'd agree with George Neumayr and Joseph Farah Arnold is unfit for public office. Millions of Californians however, and this includes yours truly, have felt since this is a country of second chances and most of what he did happened such a long time ago, he should be given the chance to show he can be a better person. No one can guarantee a human being will be an ethical person. That's up to the individual in question. Can Arnold overcome the allegations against him and prove his detractors wrong? The jury is still out on that question. The acid test will be now how he behaves and what he does in office. And since we're going to elect someone who has so many skeletons in his closet to our state'a highest office, he had better be worthy of our trust. Its too bad we can't get Tom McClintock elected as no one can imagine him being a serial groper or embracing liberal social policies once he's elected. We've endorsed a candidate who is less than ideal to win and if we don't want to have a cheap victory tomorrow and go the way of the Clinton Democrats, its imperative to insist now more than ever on upholding our conservative principles even if it means being in opposition to our new Governor. For I consider above all that principles are more important than party affiliation.

Forget that it's Arnold for a minute. Since when do we buy into the feminist invention of "sexual harrasement"? Before this heinous crime was created from whole cloth by feminists and Democrats, it didn't matter and was never taken seriously. It was a joke. "Sexual harrasement" can mean literally anything. A glance. Shaking hands and holding on a second too long. A pat on the shoulder. Anything. Therefore, it should mean nothing. It's a tool to use against men, and, oh yeah, Republicans.

I would call a pot smoking, serial groper who gang banged a woman "a law-breaking libertine". And it is against the law to grope someone without their permission, Schwarzenegger's lucky that the statute of limitations expired for those misdemeanors. Schwarzenegger admitted as such and specifically said that some of the reports are true. Face it, Arnold assaulted women while he was married as recently as 3 years ago. Most of his social policies are patently liberal. I can't understand how any self-respecting conservative can vote for such person.

Vote McClintock.

According to the FR chapter of NOW, Arnold is guilty until proven innocent and hung. If not for "sexual harrasment" then for being a heterosexual.

Most truly conservative Republicans in California probably left the state years ago.
