Patriotic "Liberals?"
Gulf1 ^ | 10/10/03 | Col. Robert Pappas, USMC, Ret.

Posted on 10/09/2003 9:53:36 PM PDT by ppaul

The "mainstream" media wrings its hands daily and wails with increasing crescendo about combat casualties that continue during the Occupation Phase of Operation Iraqi Freedom. They do this in a transparent and concerted effort to over blow problems and create the perception of a "Vietnam syndrome," with the ultimate objective of labeling the Iraqi Freedom anti terrorist action a failure, discredit the President and propagandize the citizens for an election defeat.

The writer is not an apologist for "GW" Bush and has considerable heartburn with his backhanded treatment of Veterans and other political failures such as "out-democrating" the democrats on a wide array of domestic social and economic issues. However, in totally false spin, the "liberal" leftist mainstream media and democrat presidential candidates state as gospel that the President and Administration officials have declared the war as won, then point to ongoing casualties in horror.

Truth bears only vague similarity to their assertions. No responsible person has stated that the war was won. What has been said is that, "major combat is over," and "The battle of Iraq is one victory in a war on terror that began on September 11th, 2001, and still goes on." In typical "liberal" leftist spin the media attributes the word "victory" to the entire operation but neglects to point to the phrase at the end of the statement, "still goes on."

Given that there is continued "resistance" in Iraq, hardly well organized and hardly perfectly executed, rather, more like a mosquito attacking an elephant, it would be useful to put casualties in perspective: Note: Killed in Action (KIA), Wounded in Action (WIA), Non Battle Death (NBD).

x Revolutionary War: 4,435 KIA 6,188 WIA NBD Not Available
x War of 1812: 2,260 KIA 4,505 WIA NBD Not Available
x Mexican War: 1,733 KIA 4,152 WIA 11,550 NBD
x Civil War: 214,938 KIA 281,881 WIA 283,394 NBD (Union only)
x Spanish/American War: 385 KIA 1,662 WIA 2061 NBD
x WWI: 53,402 KIA 204,002 WIA 61,114 NBD
x WWII: 291,557 KIA 671,846 WIA 113,842 NBD
x Korean War: 33,741 KIA 103,284 WIA 2,835 NBD
x Vietnam War: 47,415 KIA 153,303 WIA 10,785 NBD
x Persian Gulf War: 147 KIA 467 WIA 235 NBD
x Iraqi Freedom: 176 KIA 1570 WIA 104 NBD (as of 092503)

By comparison there were 45,815 killed on US highways in 2002, or and average of 128 each day. From 1990-2000, 1,054 police officers died in the line of duty for an average of about one every third day. There is an annual average of 4,000 civilian fire deaths and some 22,000 fire injuries with 75,000 fires of suspicious origins.

In the grand scheme of things US loses in Iraq are relatively small when compared to losses in other wars and fades even more when compared to violent death in the US on a daily basis.

This is not Vietnam, the US is not bogged down no matter how much the so-called "mainstream" media and leftist "liberals" would have one believe; and President Bush has done the right thing. To argue otherwise reveals blind partisanship, ignorance and self-hating, unpatriotic motives. As for "liberals" and our "friends" worshiping at the altar of the United Nations, well there's a phrase for them, but it isn't suitable for print.

"Liberal" leftists partisan bitterness and vile rhetoric is befitting the enemy not patriotic Americans, as "liberals" secretly pray for increased casualties, political failure, and military defeat. How sick, disgusting, vile and treacherous! If they had any integrity they would admit their allegiance to bin Laden and other Muslim extremists.

Patriotic "liberals?" That's an oxymoron if ever there was one.

The leftists no longer make a pretense about how they seek harm to America.

Calling themselves "patriots" or making speaches in front of the American flag (ala Cruz Bustamecha)is a sick joke.

I am going to be so bold to say that there's no such thing as a patriotic liberal. A liberal's core beliefs are the very anti-thesis of what makes American great. Their core beliefs are to tear down America, and divide Americans as we saw when they put up a mighty row over prop.54. Their core beliefs hobble pupils going to schools that more resemble a DMZ rather than an institution of learning (thanks to teacher unions and liberal feel good politicking).

About a year ago a power point presentation was e-mailed around the net. It showed a photo sequence of a soviet BMP crowded with Taliban being 'zapped' by our special forces people. Wish I had the know how to find that and post it here.

Amen, Brother!!!! September 11th, 2001 had more deaths than
we suffered December 7th, 1941 at Pearl Harbor. People were not SPOILED ROTTEN as they are now in 2003!!!! People back then had the BACKBONE to stick it out until Surrender terms were signed by the Japanese on September 2nd, 1945!!!! These people of today are so SPOILED ROTTEN, it makes me sick to watch them!!!! They need a real good *ss chewing just to make them realise how good they got it today as compared to back then. No they tell us not to reflect on History or they tell us get into the 21st century. They dont care what lessons of the past should teach us!!!! All they want to do is sit drinking their beer watching football games or their wallets get thicker instead of kicking those people in the *ss who want to kill us!!!! They use petty excuses "It costs too much too want to achieve total victory on the War on Terror", "Bring the Troops home"(When the fighting and destruction of the enemy who would kill us here at home if we do not fight them over there continues around the globe and should continue until final victory has been achieved).

If we had this same SPOILED ROTTEN Mentality of Today back in December of 1941, we might be speaking Japanese, German, Italian instead of English!!!! Thank GOD people
were not so SPOILED ROTTEN back then!!!! How many more December 7th, 1941's and September 11th, 2001's do we have to suffer before these people realise we don't stop what we started until the last dead enemy s.o.b. is put to rest, then declare final victory????

I've served 27 years, served all over the world. Served on America's first line of defense before it was allowed to decay to the point where September 11th, 2001 occurred. Our Defense was allowed to decay by the same SPOILED ROTTEN people who want us to throw in the towel (when were winning the battles) now! I was sent to Afghanistan in early 2002. I've recently returned home and awaiting redeployment overseas. Afghanistan and Iraq are two small stepping stones in our march to Victory in the War on Terror!!!! We should not stop until that final Victory has
been achieved!!!!

I am Fully Committed to fight the enemy until he is destroyed!!!!

Thanks for the ping, Tonk.
Excellent post, ppaul.

The LIES by the lamestream press disgust me. Our troops are doing a fine job in Iraq and I'm so proud of them. I hate the way the news media portrays the situation over there.

BUT....the 'net is full of truthful information and a lot of it can be found here at FR, thanks to the efforts of several here. And quite a few of us are making sure the word gets out to others by mass e-mailings. hehe! I just got through sending several things out and loved every minute of it. I simply can't sit back and let the alphabet news stations get away with their lies.

Patriotic "Liberals?" pfffffffft!! I agree....a definite oxymoron.

I can never thank our military men and women, past and present, for the freedoms we enjoy.

"A presidential executive order issued during the Clinton
administration hamstrung the FBI so badly that bureau
lawyers decided it would be illegal to infiltrate Osama bin
Laden's terrorist training camps in Afghanistan, a senior
FBI official during the Clinton administration said Saturday."
(June 1, 2002)

"I don't believe 9-11 happened because of an intelligence breach," Quayle told Fox News Channel's "Hannity & Colmes."
"I think it was really a policy breach. It was the inaction of the previous administration, by and large, that al Qaeda -- and bin Laden in particular -- thought that they could hit the United States, and there would be a retaliation maybe of a cruise missile but nothing more than that," he explained.

The comments make the former vice president, who served under President Bush's father from 1989 to 1993, the highest ranking former U.S. official to suggest that the Clinton administration should get the lion's share of the blame for not preventing the 9-11 attacks.

Thanks for the ping! I've been hoping that someone would pull together these comparisons. To be clear, this does not diminish the personal loss and suffering or the sacrifices endured by the families of our troops who are fighting the war to protect us. But I do appreciate having a perspective with which to evaluate the cost being paid.

I would like to see the total cost of the War on Terrorism as sacrfices have and continue to be made around the world.

Thank you for your service to our country! You are so right. Those of us who were born at the end of VietNam have no idea what true sacrifices were like for the men and women who have gone before. We HAVE been spoiled by the peace afforded by our ancestors sacrifices...and that spoiling has caused a LOT of laziness. I just praise God that there are those in the past who were willing to give themselves for my freedom.

A friend and I were discussing just the other day how impatient of a society we are. We want everything and we want it NOW!! (Applies to many areas of our lives!)

It seems to me that the Korean War deaths have been downplayed in recent years from an orginal number in the 54,000-55,000 range. I'm not sure if this was done to make Vietnam look worse or what. From what I understand, we had lost thousands in the defensive actions in the first two months of the Korean War even before Inchon and the '50-'51 "Edge of Disaster" campaign in North Korea.

A true liberal is someone such as Ronald Reagan, the Founding Fathers, and most of us here at Free Republic, if you accept the true definition of the word as being someone who respects the rights of the individual and the rule of law. The leftists of today are much closer to being fascists, which in fact many of them are.

I couldn't agree with you more! I still remember Al Gore on the stage at the Dimocratic Convention prior to the election of 2000. Algore was standing there with this huge American flag in the background like the beginning of the movie "Patton." Then Al Gore started talking about registering the firearms of Law-abiding gun owners, and issuing National I.D. cards to all citizens! I've never been more revolted in my life!

"Patriotic 'liberals?' That's an oxymoron if ever there was one."

Alan Colmes would be soooo disappointed to hear that.

But like that which collects around the anal cavity and is eventually expelled, liberals are a necessary part of this country as we know it.

Yes, duly noted. Mel Gibson has delivered to us many fine examples of American heroic action with his directing and acting. I wanted to see this film, but it had a short life here with little or no pubicity. Hollywood hated it. Hope to get a DVD copy.

Maybe it really happened, but who knows where, by whom, and to whom. Clearly it's being used to further someone's immediate agenda. Our troops are heroes, of course. But I'd rather hear about their real accomplishments. Just standing in the hot sun helping the Iraqi people is far more heroic than trashing a BMP.

The meaning has devolved over the years.
Today, "liberal" means "leftist" or "statist" or "socialist" or "communist."
Take your pick.

I'm a liberal, and I love my country, bub. Back off a bit from the other-guys-are-creatures-of-Satan kind of politics. It's killing this country.
