On NBC News tonight, chief foreign affairs correspondent Andrea Mitchell (Mrs Alan Greenspan) had a report on Shirin Ebadi, the Iranian lawyer who won the Nobel Peace Prize today. The report had a film clip of Gary Sick, identified as a "former National Security Council official", commenting on Ms Ebadi. His comments were appropriate and unremarkable.
What I do find remarkable is the use of Gary Sick as a commentator. Sick, you may recall, was behind the resurrection of the "October Surprise" accusation during the first Bush administration. The October Surprise accusation held that George H W Bush, while running for vice-president in 1980, met with Iranian officials in Paris and arranged that the Teheran hostages would not be released prior to the November, 1980, election.
Now, I thought that the October Surprise scandal was shot down. Why does Sick have any credibility? Why is he in NBC News's Rolodex? Why do I ask questions with such obvious answers?
