NOT SO INNOCENT

October 8, 2003 -- ONE of the whopping lies of our time is that journalists are simply innocent bystanders with no responsibility for the outcome of events. In fact, our own media may turn out to be the crucial variable in Iraq. They've already made a success of post-modern terrorism as surely as Colonel Tom Parker made Elvis a star.

"don't tell me you're reporting honestly, when you're only reporting the negative one-tenth of one per cent of what's happening, while playing up each terrorist attack"

WoW. An honest journalist.
Attacking his own.
How novel.

(even for N.Y. Post)

Well he's a "journalist" now, actually more of a commentator. Ralph Peters is a retired US Army officer, a writer, and a frequent contributor to Parameters. His most recent book is Beyond Terror, Strategy in a Changing World, and his early novel, The War In 2020, which has developed a cult following over the years, has just been republished.

A VERY GOOD article of his can be found at
http://carlisle-www.army.mil/usawc/Parameters/02autumn/peters.htm

(note)The War In 2020 very good, a little depressing but very good.

Is it true that many journalists work for secret government agencies like the Mossad? I understand that these agaencies like to report journalists and photographers who work for Reuters, the NYT and the ABC/CBS/NBC/CNN net works because the are so anti-American in the first place that it provides great cover.

I heard that the recent Reuters RIF had less to do with mismanagement and financial finagleing than it did with several spy agencies under such pressure that they wanted their people back. The RIF story was the best way to cover the "recall." Verdad?

Ralph Peters may be the reincarnation of Nostradamus. I remember reading War in 2020, and it was depressing, but so much of that book that I considered literary license then has come to pass, or easily could. Peters saw this coming 20 years ago.

The American media, with a few exceptions, is full of people ideologically inclined to blame America first. The Vietnam war established the permanant adversarial relationship between the press and the military. The US military is assumed by most newsies to be either liars or incompetent or both. The Tet Offensive of 1968 was a victory on the battlefield, but a defeat in the living room. Walter Cronkeit and the rest of the media were willing agents of the North Vietnamese psychological warfare and agitation/propaganda bureaus. These same kind of people took Baghdad Bob seriously.

Fox News, the internet, and especially bloggers are breaking this anti-American monopoly on information. We don't need graduates of elite Ivy League schools of journalism to tell us what is going on anymore.

You nailed it. Call it the blessings of the information age. But it is a fight.

When I first saw Fox News Channel launch in 1996, I also noticed they were initially sued out of many markets they tried to enter. For example, New York City's cable network was run by Ted Turner who obtained an injunction from letting Fox News market itself to cable subscribers.

It's still a tough road to trek. When we see FNC displace CNN on Airport TV monitors, we'll know we've won.

America will fall to its knees in defeat, when we refuse to look evil in the eye.

The media is orchestrating a failure. They must not win.
