The Germans were never the medeival animals these Arabs terrorists are.
Oh yes they were. The Nazi's invented their own mythology (based on Norse mythology and medieval legends dealing with grails and knights no less) to justify their crimes. Hitler wanted to bring back a pagan religion to replace Christianity. He had years to indoctrinate the youth and other portions of the German population, and he probably built on the efforts of his predecessors (along with Mussolini) as well. Germany (and Austria) underwent a huge identity crisis after it lost the war. But every German was not necessarily a Nazi.
The trouble with the Saddams of the world is that they've had role models in figures like Hitler and Stalin. Their friends, the bin Ladens, have an equally atrocious ideology that is even older. But every Arab and believer in Islam is not necessarily in one of those two camps. We have to believe that, or the end result of this war will be worse (for the enemy at least) than WWII.

One thing to keep in mind is that both Hitler and bin Laden have married Medieval philosophy with modern technology. But Hitler did a better job, as he started off better armed than all the other nations in Europe at the time. Not only that, he tended to employ "scorched earth tactics" only when it was clear that he was losing the war. bin Laden and his cohorts have used these tactics from the very start, but hey, perhaps that implies that they're well on their way to losing.
