Controversial Catholic Voter's Guide Tells Catholics How to Vote on 'Forbidden' Issues; Full-Page Ad to Run in USA Today During GOP Convention

Friday August 27, 10:22 am ET

SAN DIEGO, Aug. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- On Tuesday August 31, over a million voters in and around New York City, Hartford, Buffalo, St. Louis, Los Angeles, San Diego, Las Vegas, Washington D.C., Baltimore, Richmond, and hundreds of surrounding cities will be reading a full-page ad in USA Today that advises them how to vote according to Catholic moral teachings on five key issues when they go to the polls.

The issues Catholics are forbidden to vote in favor of are abortion, homosexual marriage, embryonic stem cell research, human cloning, and euthanasia.

The full-page ad in USA Today is paid for by Catholic Answers, the nation's largest lay-run Catholic apologetics organization dedicated to defending Catholic teaching and dispelling myths about Catholicism.

According to Karl Keating, founder and president of Catholic Answers, Catholics who deliberately vote against the Church's moral teachings and still call themselves "good Catholics" have another thought coming.

"It's a serious sin to vote for moral evils, especially those that are so clearly opposed to the Church's teachings."

He continues, "On these five non-negotiables, there is only one possible position for a conscientious Catholic to take: complete opposition. A Catholic is free to support or to oppose any politician or ballot measure on issues such as jobs, trade, taxes, or the war in Iraq. But with issues such as abortion, euthanasia, homosexual marriage, human cloning, and embryonic stem cell research, all Catholics are forbidden to endorse them or vote for them." Unfortunately, the USCCB thinks the faithful must be protected from this guide.

That's right. They approved the the guide - Faithful Citizenship - and distribution of any other guide I think is discouraged.

I think the influence of the USCCB on individual bishops is waning.

It should be interesting to see what spin it gets from the media...or from certain bishops, for that matter.

It's true Catholics should already know this, but it doesn't hurt to drive the point home in a very public way, especially if it makes the lukewarm and the liberal Catholics come face to face with issues they might be avoiding out of denial.

The false shepherds are at it again.
We badly need new bishops.

We could all do our "duty" and donate to Catholic Answers and help propagate the truth. As my dad always says "build your bank account in heaven".

I agree. Bishop Vasa really threw collegiality out the window when he said McCarrick never shared the contents of the Ratzinger memo.

YOu can only hope Biblical teachings which should be as natrual as breathing would be their guide on voting. For example, would God approve of abortion, homosexuality, playing class warfare. lying etc. ? NO!

Of course I do not disagree, however I believe it's important to add that America shouldn't even be a battleground over 'legal' murder... reading one paragraph into our "birth certificate" proves it!

It it...this just helps to clarify it in case there is any doubt. This is just
like a book from the many ministers that speak on a subject from the bible.

I think the only problem here is the use of the word “forbidden”. These issues are non-negotiable. They are staples of our moral being, not cookies on top of the refrigerator. You would think a Catholic would know about these issues. The sad thing is that a lot don’t. The thing that dioceses are worried about is their tax status. The only way that would be in danger is if they came out and specifically supported a candidate. Since this booklet does not do that, there shouldn’t be a problem.

You would think so. But on the Catholic Answers Forum there is a section called Politics and you would not believe how many Catholics spew hate for Bush there and say they will vote for Kerry - and no amount of dialogue from the rest of us seems to phase them.

I hope that you are right but I am waiting for an October surprise from the super-liberal Democrat,Cardinal Mccarrick. He seems to control most of the east coast bishops.

Face it, two-thirds of Catholics will vote union or party and never give Faith a thought.

This is exactly why we need something like the Voters Guide. We just need to get these folks to read it and put it into application.

"It's a serious sin to vote for moral evils..."

Sad that this would be controversial. And that it has to be pointed out as if it were unclear.
