Beware anyone who describes himself as a prophet or gets his friends to do the same (a very common ploy among New Age speakers)
Dr. Arguelles bestowed upon himself the pagan name of, "Valum Votan". In a New Age magazine interview, he said it was "not until after he experimented with LSD that he realized he was a visionary."
Great, just great. Two guys drop acid, one lives under a bridge and another one goes to work for the UN.
Sounds like a bunch of Europeans are still upset that we have not started using the Metric system. Oh well. I have faith that, Christmas and the calendar that we use now, will remain for a good long time.

Use common sense here. Remember changing calendar means a change of routine for most people on the world. You have to rename all names of months and days, and hey, all softwares with dates instantly become obsolete. If you think the Y2K bugfixing is tedious, think about how much more efforts are needed to change all embedded and regular software containing date mechanisms (changing the number of months from 12 to 13, and number of days in a year).
This calendar actually looks more like several non-Western lunar calendars. (Islamic and Jewish. Chinese calendar is a mix of solar and lunar factors) It actually looks far less rationalistic than the Gregorian calendar, so I doubt whether we will see it.
IMHO this calendar has a greater chance of becoming reality instead, if the New Agers at the United Nations have their say:
This is a rationalistic rearrangement of the Gregorian calendar, and they had even had that "World Day" for the New Age buddy buddy use. ;-)

Traditional Chinese calendar is built with both lunar and solar cycles in mind. Months reflect moon cycles, with a 13th month added approximately every three years to take account of disprency between solar and lunar cycles (If we take lunar cycles only into account, the result would be like Islamic calendar which is useless for agricultural purposes - all special days (not holidays) in Chinese calendars are based on weathers.
Years are usually formed with a 60 year cycle with a combination of two words. In conjunction traditional year name of the emperor is also used with the year name (so we will say Fifth year of blah blah blah, year blah blah in traditional Chinese calendar). Since 1912 with the successful Revolution overthrowing the Qing dynasty and the proclaimation of the Republic of China, China has formally been on Gregorian calendar (except that very often year names were written in xth year of the ROC. This practice has effectively ended with the Communist People's Republic of China in power). However, the old calendar's new year day is still a formally recognized statuatory holiday in China.

I wonder if his holiness will apologize for these statements in the light of these developments.
It seems that these days Vatican apologies are reserved for "overzealous" attempts to convert the heathen and stem the rising tide of islam during the crusades.
