Forty years ago this fall, the Second Vatican Council was finishing work on its central document: the Dogmatic Constitution on the Church. Four decades later, it's surely time for every adult Catholic in the United States to revisit that great text, ponder its challenge to individualistic distortions of the faith, and make its teaching our own. The Pharisees too were enamored of temple worship. All that they allowed in were in the in-group, all others were "them", not "us". Which group did Jesus preach to personally, most of the time? They were the outcasts, the sinners, all without the big grand mother temple, the "untutored" baptized-- hey, maybe we can call them "baptists".
