Anyone seen "What the Bleep Do We Know"?

I haven't seen the movie, but before I see a movie usually I check first with IMDb. From the discussions in the movie's board, I found that the movie was basically a promotion of certain new-age idea. The following is from the movie website.

Ramtha. One of the great enigmas that scientists have studied in the last decade is Ramtha, a mystic, philosopher, master teacher and hierophant. His partnership with American woman JZ Knight, his channel, still baffles scholars. Results of their studies point to a decidedly non-local phenomenon and were presented at a conference titled "In Search of the Self – The Role of Consciousness in the Construction of Reality" on February 8 and 9, 1997. At this gathering scholars from faculties of Quantum Physics, Parapsychology, Anthropology, Sociology and Theology who had studied Knight for two years, presented their findings.

Using a sophisticated polygraph, noted parapsychologists Ian Wickramasekera and Stanley Krippner of Saybrook Graduate School repeatedly observed that while JZ Knight is channeling Ramtha, the readings of her brain-wave activity shift to delta, and that the lower cerebellum operates her body which talks, walks, eats, drinks and dances while Ramtha teaches – about the mystery of mind over matter.

Through a coherent system of thought that unifies scientific knowledge with esoteric knowledge of spirit, his students study biology, neurophysiology, neurochemistry and quantum physics. Like Bohm he declares that consciousness is the ground of all being. In his own lifetime 35,000 years ago he learned to separate his consciousness from his body, raise its frequency and eventually take it with him. He has been one of the few human beings to become an eyewitness to the seen, and, the unseen.

haven't seen it so I probably shouldnt comment , but lack of real knowledge has never stopped me before. It was just an ad for some new age cult ramath (???I think, I don't know).
The "scientists" in the movie were not really real scientists. one was a massage therapist , or something else along those lines.

It looks interesting; QM does seem to imply an interaction between subatomic particles and the conscious mind, though some secularists have theories that try to complexedly work around it in Aristotlean fashion.

Stick to good science, and don't patronize films that make a mockery of reason and the scientific method.

And would you consider QM to be quackery?

Admonishing people to stick to 'good' science is at best ambiguous given the many perspectives people have on the subject.

I would say that ID is good science, but many regard it as another variant on Creationism (though hundreds of scientists have signed statements asserting otherwise).

I dont equate this movie with ID or Creationism or QM, but I think I will try and find out more about it before pronouncing it to be quakery.

William Tiller, Ph.D. (www.tiller.org) graduated with a B.A.Sc. in 1952 with a degree in Engineering Physics from the University of Toronto. He also has an M.A.Sc. and a Ph.D. from the University of Toronto. He worked for nine years in the Westinghouse Research Laboratory with theoretical and experimental investigation into the detailed physics of the freezing process of a wide range of materials; i. e., water, metals, semiconductors, oxides and polymers. He also investigated the relationships between the crystallization process and the detailed structure and properties of the solid. He exploited this knowledge of crystallization to generate new processes for ingot casting, material purification, single crystal growth, chemical crystallizers, etc.

Dr. Tiller has been a professor at Stanford University in the Department of materials science and Engineering. He has been a consultant to government and industry in the fields of metallurgy and solid-state physics and formerly Associate Editor of 2 scientific journals. He has published more than 250 scientific papers, three technical books and has five patents issued. His fields of specialization are crystal growth, surfaces and interfaces, physical metallurgy, semiconductor processing, thin film formation, computer simulation and psychoenergetics (70 additional publications in this area). He is also the founding director of the Academy of Parapsychology and Medicine and The Institute of Noetic Sciences.

His Publications include An Introduction to Computer Simulation: The Science of Crystallization: Microscopic Interfacial Phenomena, The Science of Crystallization: Macroscopic Phenomena and Defect Generation, Science and Human Transformation, and Conscious Acts of Creation.

Amit Goswami earned his Ph.D. from Calcutta University in theoretical nuclear physics in 1964 and has been a professor of physics at the University of Oregon since 1968. He taught physics for 32 years in this country, mostly at Oregon. Goswami is a senior scholar in residence at the Institute of Noetic Sciences and teaches regularly at the Holmes Institute in L.A.; UNIPAZ in Brazil; and The Theosophical Society in Wheaton, Illinois.

He also wrote a textbook on Quantum Mechanics that is well regarded and used. He is the author of five books, including The Self-Aware Universe, Quantum Creativity, Physics of the Soul, and The Visionary Window.

Now, while I think Hagelin's ideas on public policy (in which he calims to be an expert) are silly, one can't doubt his scintific credentials.

John Hagelin, Ph.D. (www.hagelin.org) is a world-renowned quantum physicist, educator, author, and public policy expert. Dr. Hagelin has conducted pioneering research at CERN (the European Center for Particle Physics) and SLAC (the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center) and is responsible for the development of a highly successful grand unified field theory based on the Superstring. In his book, Manual for a Perfect Government, Dr. Hagelin shows how, through educational programs that develop human consciousness, and through policies and programs that effectively harness the laws of nature, it is possible to solve acute social problems and enhance governmental effectiveness.

In recognition of his outstanding achievements, Dr. Hagelin was named winner of the prestigious Kilby Award, which recognizes scientists who have made "major contributions to society through their applied research in the fields of science and technology." The award recognized Dr. Hagelin as "a scientist in the tradition of Einstein, Jeans, Bohr and Eddington."

Dr. Hagelin holds an A.B. summa cum laude from Dartmouth College and an M.A. and Ph.D. from Harvard University. He is currently Professor of Physics and Director of the Institute of Science, Technology and Public Policy at Maharishi University of Management, and Minister of Science and Technology of the Global Country of World Peace. He was also the Natural Law Party presidential candidate in 2000.

Professor Albert is the author of Quantum Mechanics and Experience and Time and Chance, and has published many articles on quantum mechanics, mostly in the Physical Review.

Stuart Hameroff M.D. (www.quantumconsciousness.org) is a Professor in the Departments of Anesthesiology and Psychology, and Director of the Center for Consciousness Studies at the University of Arizona in Tucson, Arizona. He is an attending anesthesiologist at University of Arizona Medical Center, spending 4 days per week in the surgical operating rooms. In the 1970’s and 1980’s he studied the molecular mechanisms of anesthetic gases, and computation in protein cytoskeletal structures – microtubules – that organize interiors of the brain’s neurons and other cells.

In Dr. Hameroff’s words: “In the early 1990's the study of consciousness became increasingly popular and I was strongly influenced by Roger Penrose's The Emperor's New Mind (and later Shadows of the Mind, Oxford Press, 1989 and 1994). Quite famous for his work in relativity, black holes, and quantum mechanics, Roger had turned to the problem of consciousness and concluded the mind was more than complex computation. Something else was necessary, and that something, he suggested, was a particular type of quantum computation he was proposing ('objective reduction' - a self-collapse of the quantum wave function due to quantum gravity). He was linking consciousness to a basic process in underlying space-time geometry - reality itself!’

‘It seemed fascinating and plausible to me, but Roger didn't have a good candidate for a biological site for his proposed process. I thought, ‘could microtubules be quantum computers?’ I wrote to him, and we soon met in his office in Oxford in September 1992. Jeffrey Satinover, M.D. (psychiatry), (www.satinover.com) M.S. (physics, doctoral candidate in physics). For over twenty years, Dr. Satinover has been an author and practicing psychiatrist. He was until recently a teaching fellow and doctoral student in the department of physics at Yale University, where he has completed a master?s degree as a member of the Theoretical Condensed Matter Physics group and Yale's newly-established W. H. Keck Foundation Center for Quantum Information Physics. His area of research is in supersymmetric many-body theory as applied to quantum computation. His most recent book, The Quantum Brain, explores the interface of neuroscience, computation, artificial intelligence and quantum mechanics. He is presently completing his doctorate in physics at the Laboratoire de Physique de la Matiere Condensee at the University of Nice, Sophia Antipolis, under the direction of Didier Sornette, pursuing new techniques in the prediction of chaotic time series, with applications to biological systems, climate change and markets.

Andrew B. Newberg M.D. is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Radiology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and is a staff physician in Nuclear Medicine. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 1993. His research, which has been performed in collaboration with the Departments of Neurology and Psychiatry, has focused not only on specific disorders, but also on various activation studies designed to explore how brain function is associated with various mental states.

He has published numerous articles and chapters on the topics of brain function and neuroimaging and has presented his research at both national and international meetings. He is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Nuclear Medicine, and Nuclear Cardiology.

Dr. Newberg has been particularly involved in the study of mystical and religious experiences as well as the more general mind/body relationship in both the clinical and research aspects of his career. Much of his research has focused on the relationship between brain function and various mystical and religious experiences. His research also includes understanding the physiological correlates of acupuncture therapy, meditation, and other types of alternative therapies.

He has presented his work at scientific and religious meetings throughout the world and has appeared on Good Morning America, ABC World News Tonight as well as in a number of media articles including Newsweek, the New Scientist and the National Catholic Reporter.

He was an associate director of the Neuroscience Section for the consensus conference on Scientific Research on Spirituality and Health sponsored by the National Institute of Healthcare Research and was a member of the advisory board for the American Association for the Advancement of Science Program on Science and Religion.

He has also co-authored two books entitled, Why God Won’t Go Away: Brain Scienc e and the Biology of Belief and The Mystical Mind: Probing the Biology of Belief, that explore the relationship between neuroscience and spiritual experience. He recently completed two studies with cancer patients. First, he just completed a two year clinical trial on the effects of an intervention he and his team developed for cancer patients that incorporates mindfulness meditation skills combined with creative artistic expression. The results showed that the eight-week intervention dramatically reduced-stress related medical symptoms and significantly improved quality of life. The results are currently being prepared for publication in a medical journal. This study was funded by the National Institute of Health (NIH). Secondly, he has begun studies on a mind-body-energy intervention called Neuro-Emotional Technique (NET) with traumatized cancer patients. The preliminary data is shows that the patients who receive the NET intervention have decreased distress and improved immune systems.

Dr. Monti is currently writing a scientifically based book for the lay audience on how mind, body, and the energetic systems are part of an intricate network that constitutes our physical and mental health. The book will focus on strategies for identifying and resolving blocks to having a successful, healthful life. The book is expected to be released in 2005.

Dr. Joseph Dispenza (click to email ) received his undergraduate training at Rutgers University where he majored in biochemistry. He received his Doctor of Chiropractic Degree at Life University. His continuing education has been in neurology, neurophysiology and brain function.

His research has been into unraveling the mysteries of “miraculous healing” within the context of currently accepted science. For the past three years he has traveled the world lecturing on the close relationship between brain chemistry and physical health. His forthcoming book is on the subject of genetics, molecules of emotion, neuroscience brain anatomy and physiology.

Dr. Candace Pert (web site) was a graduate student in her mid-twenties when she discovered the opiate receptor, the cellular bonding site for endorphins, the body's natural painkillers, which she calls our "underlying mechanism for bliss and bonding." This breakthrough presaged a sea change in scientific understanding of human internal communication systems, pointing the way toward the information-based model that is now supplanting the long-dominant structuralist viewpoint.

In the years since, Candace Pert has focused her research on developing non-toxic pharmaceuticals that selectively block receptor sites for the AIDS virus. She has lectured worldwide on these and other subjects, including her theories on emotions and mind-body communication. Dr. Pert holds a number of patents for modified peptides in the treatment of psoriasis, Alzheimer's disease, chronic fatigue syndrome, stroke, and head trauma. They sound like "real scientists" to me!

Clearly, it supports conclusions he doesn't want to accept, so it MUST be bad science.

Okay but which one of those was the psychic JZ Knight, who channels a 35,000-year-old mystical sage from the lost continent of Atlantis??? and if a 35,000 year old atlantian has a degree does that make the person channeling him a scientist also????

From what I heard the movie is a fraud so I have no desire to see it.

Maybe you should read more carefully.

I have not seen the movie, but I am aware that QM has some things that are definately non-intuitive like retrocausailty, indeterminism, and states that are dependent on observation.

Many have considered QM to be opening the door to a nonmaterialistic view of the universe.

None of those people is J.Z. Knight. She also appears in the movie, as does a Church of England theologian. The producers sought (and got) a wide range of perspectives.

So you "heard" that teh movie is "a fraud." From whom?

I haven't seen the film either but since I know a Psychic is used as an expert I think I'll pass (though the film may be entertaining enough, I just wouldn't take it too serious)

I despair for this country, sometimes. Anyone who can't instantly reject any film with JZ Knight (or any other fraudulent "psychic") in a starring role hasn't got the reasoning power to resist Islam, either. It doesn't matter who the scientists are - if they have something important to say they can say it in peer-reviewed journals, not by sharing the screen with fortune-tellers and mystics.

I am reminded of "davinci code" when the book came out I said to myself "no one will believe this crud" and then you actually meet people who do. Not that raising questions about that sorta thing is bad, but to believe such tripe is just silly.

Also some of those "scientists" have come out and have said that what they said in the movie is competely out of context.

I mean this movie is just to goofy, everyone knows we are controlled by super intelligent Lizard Men from beyond reality.
