LISBON, PORTUGAL - Sister Lucia Marto, the last of three children who claimed to have seen the Virgin Mary in a series of 1917 apparitions in the town of Fatima, has died, Portuguese media reported. She was 97.

Sister Lucia, a Roman Catholic nun, had been ill for the past three months and died Sunday at the Convent of Carmelitas in Coimbra, 120 miles north of Lisbon, TSF radio reported, citing family sources.

Lucia and two of her cousins, siblings Jacinta and Francisco, said in 1917 that the Virgin Mary had been appearing to them once a month and predicting events, such as world wars, the re-emergence of Christianity in Russia...."

The first sighting was May 13, [1917] and the appearances continued for another five months, ending abruptly in October.

Sister Lucia Marto

The Third Part of the Secret, which Sr. Lucia wrote down on Jan. 3, 1944, obviously was done when she got comfort and permission through Our Lady appearing to her in the Infirmary on Jan. 2, 1944, to go ahead and write it down. Sister Lucia's Her loyalty to God and The Virgin Mary was unwavering. Her place among His angels and saints is assured.

It is my hope this thread will speak to what we know of the Fatima messages, and what must be done meet their direction.

Further, Sister Maria of the Immaculate Heart of Mary received further direction from our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and The Blessed Virgin Mary.

Perhaps we would do well to reaffirm our reverence for and commitment to God as emulated by Sister Maria of the Immaculate Heart of Mary:

On December 10, 1925, Our Lady, with the Child Jesus beside Her, appeared to Sister Lucia in her room. She was holding out Her Heart surrounded by sharp thorns. Both asked for reparation to be made to the Immaculate Heart. Our Lady promised to assist with all the necessary graces for salvation at death of those who would make the Five First Saturdays. That is, those who, for five consecutive first Saturdays of the month, would go to Confession, receive Holy Communion, recite the Rosary and spend fifteen minutes meditating on the Mysteries of the Rosary, all with the intention of making reparation to Her. (Later Our Lord said that Confession could be on another day as long as one receives Holy Communion in the state of grace.)

On May 29, 1930 Our Lord explained to Sr. Lucia that the five Saturdays were in reparation for:

1. Those who deny the Immaculate Conception.
2. Those who deny Our Lady's virginity.
3. Those who deny Our Lady's Divine maternity and that She is the Mother of all mankind.
4. Those who cause children to have indifference, contempt or hatred toward Our Lady.
5. Those who commit outrages against Holy Images of Our Lady.

Please, please, please, avoid the 'did or didn't' baitings.

A thread devoted to the abundance of apparitions Sister Maria of the Immaculate Heart of Mary reported would be a testament to her role as Heavenly Messenger. The apologists for this pope will not be convinced he did not reveal the Third Secret. Let them blather. Take the high road. The road He would prefer we take.

Before posting an article, one appropriately does a search using the headline from the article in question to learn if it was already posted. I followed this process to obvious conclusion. Seeing no article by that title, it was posted.

But then the thread you reference was posted with no supporting documentation. Consequently it would not have been brought to my attention, and I could have done something better with my time. The vicissitudes of life weigh heavily.....and all that rot. FR's post 'search' simply does not take into account related threads by way of word association.

Sr.Lucia died today,the 13th. On the same date,the 13th. Our Lady
first appeared to her. On this 13th day, Our Lady came and took
Sr. Lucia home. With her celestial court to escort Sr. Lucia past
the doors of purgatory, where as a young child, the Blessed Mother
showed her the horrors there, and where today the souls of popes,
bishops, and priests are being purified, for among other things,
their doubting this chosen child of Our Lady. Upwards to the throne
of Christ the King they take her. Her King and Savior then placed on
her head a crown of golden roses that was made from all of the roses
sent to His mother from each of Sr.Lucia's rosaries during her long
hard life here on earth. Her cousins run to great her and never more
will she need permission from Ratzinger to speak to anyone. God has
Blessed you Sr. Lucia please pray for us here on earth.
Every saint needs a miracle perhaps her miracle will be that we get a
catholic pope and the consecration will be done as the Blessed Mother
said.

I would hope people would not focus so much on the third secret itself, but the message of Fatima in general. I think Cardinal Ratzinger said it best on 10/13/96 at a Mass at the Cova da Iria:

"To all the curious I would say I am certain that the Virgin Mary does not engage in sensationalism. She does not create fear. She does not present apocalytic visions, but guides people to her Son. And this is what is essential."

He is also quoted as saying on a Catholic Radio interview that "Our Lady did not appear to the Fatima children to create sensation. Mary's purpose is, through these simple children, to call the world back to simplicity, that is, to the essentials: conversion, prayer and the sacraments."

God Bless Sr. Maria Lucia!

I actually thought that the 3rd secret was known to the church.

It was revealed several years ago.

The conspiracy-minded say that (1) the Church never discovered the third secret and Sr. Lucia took it to her grave because the evil men who run the Church never let her tell it or (2) that the Church knows it, but the evil men who run the Church have kept it hidden and that in either case, the divulging of the secret a few years ago by the Vatican was a fabrication.

Those who are swelled by their spiritual pride into believing their own fantasies will never be satisfied.

I expect some Dan Brownesque charlatan to make some quick bucks off this situation in the near future.

I heard rumors that the 3rd secret is that there will be corruption in the Church, testing its faith and foundation, or something to that extent.

Well the third secret was revealed, so there's no need to rely on rumors. It speaks of the Church being beset by enemies within and without.

"She does not present apocalytic visions"

Based upon that, we should all ignore what she said at Fatima........and to Lucia post 1917........as well as what she said at Lourdes, LaSallette, Akita, Betania......

She was sent by God to us with warnings - which have, by and large been ignored by the clergy. Woe unto them!

Sister Maria Lucia of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart

It is now uniformly being reported that Sister Lucia took the name "Sister Maria Lucia of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart"

The Vatican publication Zenit News Agency refers to Sister Lucia as "Sister Maria Lucia of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart"

In their story "Fatima's Last Visionary Dies" Catholic Online reports in part:

On Oct. 24, 1925, she entered the Institute of the Sisters of St. Dorothy and at the same time was admitted as a postulant in the congregation's convent in Tuy, Spain, near the Portuguese border. She made her first vows on Oct. 3, 1928, and her perpetual vows on Oct. 3, 1934, receiving the name Sister Mary of the Sorrowful Mother.

She returned to Portugal in 1946 and two years later entered the Carmelite convent of St. Teresa in Coimbra, where she made her profession as a Discalced Carmelite on May 31, 1949, taking the name Sister Maria Lucia of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart.

What Sister Lucy has said about the Third Secret is worth repeating. There are consistent references to Churchmen "being fooled by false doctrine;" to a "diabolical disorientation" afflicting "so many persons who occupy places of responsibility" in the Church; to "priests and consecrated souls" who "are so deceived and misled" because "the devil has succeeded in infiltrating evil under cover of good . . . leading into error and deceiving souls having a heavy responsibility through the place which they occupy . . . They are blind men guiding other blind men," and so on.

Actually, it was Mark in the Old South who asked me to clarify the name Sister Lucia took as a Discalced Carmelite. When I did my initial search, the name "Sister Maria of the Immaculate Heart of Mary" came up. The search I did yesterday (using the journalistic two source rule) came up with "Sister Maria of the Immaculate Heart of Mary".

Thanks for the post, Debbie.

"Sister Maria [Lucia of Jesus] of [and] the Immaculate Heart of Mary".....I think the thing about teaching an old dog new tricks comes into play here.

Sister Lucia has always been "Sister Lucia" to me. I guess if I find myself writing her name often enough, "Sister Maria Lucia of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart" will find it's way into my lexicon.
