Gibson to Re-Release “Passion of the Christ” in time for Holy Week
Life Site | Feb 11th, 2005

HOLLYWOOD, February 11, 2005 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Mel Gibson has decided to re-release The Passion of the Christ in theatres in time for Good Friday.

The new cut tones down the more violent scenes, such as the scourging and some scenes from the crucifixion, in order to avoid a restricted rating. Daily Variety reported Thursday that Gibson plans to trim five to six minutes from the film, for re-release in US theatres March 11.

“There has been quite a demand by the religious community to bring (the film) back for Easter,” Gibson's partner at Icon Productions, Bruce Davey, told Variety, as reported by the Turkish Press.

“And there has been a lot of discussion about the violence,” Davey said. “Mel wanted to try and accommodate those people by making a version that is softer and gentler.”

“There are no new scenes, and the cuts are limited to the more violent aspects of the film, if that's the right term. The scourging scene in particular has been substantially adjusted.”

I heard about this on Trinity Broadcasting's "Behind The Scenes" program on Tuesday evening. Great news. More moulah for Gibson. I've got the DVD, so I'll probably pop that in and watch it on Easter.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if Gibson would do this every year?

You are invited to a last-minute exclusive lecture in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania with Fr. John Bartunek, author of “Inside The Passion”, the first and only authorized, behind-the-scenes look at “The Passion of the Christ”. Fr. John Bartunek, L.C., provides biblical, historical, and theological insights gleaned from hours spent on the set and interviews with director Mel Gibson, actors, and filmmaking crew. “Inside the Passion” is the most complete and thorough commentary on the movie you will read. The book also contains a foreword by director Mel Gibson.

“For weeks I accompanied Mel Gibson, watching him work with the editors, the composer, the promotions team, and the press. I asked him questions about the film that no one else asked, discovering reasons behind some of the innumerable artistic choices that he was forced to make, choices that turned this small art house project into an international blockbuster.” - Fr. John Bartunek

Like any great work of art, this film transcends mere explanations--even those of the artist himself--but well-chosen explanations of the context and the artist’s intent provided by Fr. Bartunek effectively turn this emotionally-stimulating, aesthetic experience into a powerful spiritual encounter.

This is the only scheduled lecture and book signing by Fr. John Bartunek in the United States. Seating is limited to only 80 people. RESERVED SEATING ONLY. To reserve a seat, contact us as soon as possible at (215) 877-9910.

“The Passion of Christ” will be re-released in theaters this Lent. If you have seen the film or plan to see it, this is a great opportunity to delve into the depths of the film with an insider and ask the questions you always wanted to ask.

BREAKING PASSION NEWS

First, we'd like to thank everyone for their support of "The Passion of The Christ"! Your votes made "The Passion of The Christ" the number one choice for The People's Choice Awards, and Mel Gibson received the award with thanks. Although The Passion was overlooked for an Academy Award for Best Picture, it was nominated for 3 Oscars. But which ones? Is it true that there is a new "Insider's Book" being released by an insider to The Passion? Is it true that The Passion will be re-released during Lent with less violence so it will be PG-13? Want to show The Passion in your Church but concerned about licensing? Well, now you can license it. Want to know how? As always, you can find the answers to these and many more questions on our website at the link below:

Christ Rises Again

After being trimmed by about six minutes by Mel Gibson, Newmarket will re-release the film on about 500 screens in March.

Newmarket Films
 Passion will hit theaters again

Newmarket will soon be releasing a kinder, gentler version of Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ for those who can't take the blood and gore. Gibson himself trimmed five to six minutes of violent scenes, and the new version, The Passion Recut, will be unrated.

The recut will begin playing on 500-750 screens beginning March 11. Although the film has already made $370.2 million on its initial theatrical run, Gibson wanted to make a tamer version available to those who stayed away because of the violence. It will be in theaters through the Easter weekend, and, if successful, might be released at the same time each year.

In particular, the bloody scourging scene, in which Christ is brutally lashed by Roman soldiers, has been shortened. Gibson showed the recut to the ratings board, and when it became apparent it would still receive an R-rating, he decided the rating would defeat the purpose, he decided to release it with no rating at all.

Great! I will be watching this with my in laws (Roman Catholic) next week.

Through all our division and infighting, what I like about this movie is it reminds us of how much we as Christians really do have in common.

“Mel wanted to try and accommodate those people by making a version that is softer and gentler.”

Easy. Show Christ's accusers as wily red-eyed Swedes and you won't have to worry about the scourging scene.
