The Rev. Alfred J. Kunz was a priest known and consulted by many in the Catholic Church. He was a canon lawyer, meaning he had thorough expertise in the laws of the Church -the Code of Canon Law, as it is known. He also was a staunch defender of orthodoxy, not much liked by Catholic liberals (at least, those who actually knew of him), and a thorn in the side to those who desire to see authentic Christianity wiped off the face of the earth.
In March of 1998, Fr. Kunz was found murdered. Brutally murdered. And his murder remains unsolved. For a little background of the case, I give you the following text, provided by Detective Kevin Hughes of the Dane County Sheriff's Office:
"On March 4, 1998, at 7:00 a.m., the body of Fr. Alfred J. Kunz, DOB 4/15/30, was found in the hallway of St. Michael School. The school is in the Village of Dane, population approximately 600, located in rural Dane County 5 miles northwest of Madison, Wis., the state capital.
"Fr. Kunz was the victim of a homicide. His throat was cut with an edged weapon severing the carotid artery. He died as a result of blood loss. The body was discovered by a teacher arriving at the school and was found lying in the hallway near the door to the father's living quarters in the school. All the doors to the school were locked and there was no sign of forced entry.
"Fr. Kunz was a traditional Roman Catholic priest, who had served at St. Michael Church for 32 years. He had strong traditional orthodox Roman Catholic views that were evidenced by the fact that he conducted Latin Masses as well as English Masses. He was an expert in canon law, the law of the Church, and as such many people nationwide consulted with him.
"On the night prior to the homicide, Fr. Kunz participated in the taping of a religious radio talk program, which was to be aired at a later date. After the taping, at 10:00 p.m., he was dropped off at St. Michael Church/school by another priest. Subsequent to that, at about 10:30 p.m., he had a phone conversation with another priest.
"Investigators believe the killer is someone that Fr. Kunz knew and is familiar with the village and St. Michael's. Fr. Kunz was probably not fearful of the killer. The attack was cowardly, unprovoked, and unexpected. The particular motive is unknown but may be related to jealousy, revenge, betrayal, or any other issue which was personal to the killer...."
There are, of course, at least a few theories about who, or what, might have been behind Kunz's murder. The prominent theory is that Kunz was killed because he "knew too much." About what? About the sexual misconduct of some men of the cloth. Men who were able to cover up their misdeeds for years, even decades. Men who formed the underbelly of the American church.
A significant aspect of that underbelly is the homosexual network, a network that has existed for a long time but is seldom if ever discussed in politically correct circles. Actively homosexual priests who seek to destroy the Church from within. This is the homosexual network. "Never underestimate the power of this network," Kunz reportedly once told a close associate.
Kunz was an advisor to the Illinois-based Roman Catholic Faithful (RCF), headed by lay Catholic activist Stephen Brady. RCF investigated the misdeeds of the now-former bishop of Springfield, Ill., Daniel Ryan. (For more information about RCF's work, visit www.rcf.org.)
The police are, understandably, very tight-lipped about the status of their investigation into the Kunz homicide. But, to my knowledge, the investigation continues. In fact, press reports have stated that the police have interviewed over 2,000 people during the course of their ongoing investigation.
So if and when the case is finally solved, we'll know for sure. We'll know the full story. But, until then, all we have is speculation. Educated speculation, that is. And, I would submit, a little educated speculation - coupled with a lot of prayer - can go a long way.

May we have his courage.
It is well worth our considered reflection, to remember his time, and to hope to God that if our time comes as such, we might be be similarly inspired by his example.
Take note of the prayers in your daily missal for propers on feasts of martyrs for due contemplation on this theme. For example, the Feast of St. Stephen, protomartyr, is most worthy of our consideration today:
Grant us, we beseech Thee, O Lord, to imitate what we venerate, that we may learn to love even our enemies; for we celebrate the birth to life everlasting of him who knew how to pray even for his persecutors to our Lord Jesus Christ, Who with Thee liveth and reigneth in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end. Amen.
Furthermore, although it is not from the season of Lent, it nonetheless abides precisely in that mode of prayer in which we are now immersed, the great festival of the incomparable St. Lawrence gives rise to perfection in this present season of fasting and prayer:
Grant us, we beseech Thee, O almighty God, to extinguish the flames of our evil dispositions, as Thou didst grant blessed Lawrence to overcome the fires of his torments. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, Who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end. Amen.
Was Martin the close associate he revealed that to? hmmm... While I believe there is a ring of truth to that statement, it is just a small piece of the puzzle.
I'm more interested in the cattle "sacrifice" that took place 24 hours prior to his murder. Does anyone know if the blood was drained from the calf in this particular instance? It would be interesting to know if it is somewhat similar to the cattle "sacrifices" taking place worldwide.
This is the first I've heard of the cattle sacrifice you mention. There is a strong suspicion among the people who knew him that something rather conspicuously satanic was employed on that dark day, involving some of the local residents there (I will not say any more), to the effect that no suspects are known to be under surveillance by the local law enforcement agenc(ies).
The ritual execution-style murder had key elements, like the evidence left had to be just so, such that the demonic power invoked could be effective. This would explain the lack of suspects. The result is to heighten the fear communicated to others who survive him, and to give satanists more confidence in their nefarious undertakings.
This is why we pray we would not fear our enemy, but rather pray for his conversion, like St. Stephen; and that we might be able by our prayer and God's grace to overcome our own temptation within, as St. Lawrence did.

Tragic. In contrast, former Archbishop Weakland continues to live in luxury at the Cousins Center in Milwaukee.
Prayer bump.
Yes, Kunz was a personal friend, confidant, and source to Martin in general, and specificly for Windswept house.
I had heard the story of this cattle mutilation coinciding with his death before - but not sure where.
Your question about similar mutilations is a pertinant one.

Note those names....click on them.....keep following the trail. You will see the likes of Luckner, Weakland, and Bernadin rear theri ugly heads
The trail leads back to South Carolina.

No, my dog tag in days of yore said: "Prot-non-denom".
But I do believe the Evil One is making a special attack on the RC branch of His Church.
Please add me to the ping list too.

What a ghastly, creepy, but intriguing story. I had never heard of this and did a quick search. Found this:
THE BIZARRE CASE OF REV. RYAN ST. ANNE SCOTT
"....As you can see, I am a priest. My name is Father Ryan St. Anne. I am a Benedictine Monastic priest, but I am also a victim of sexual abuse by members of the Catholic clergy in an incident that occurred in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee.
"In 1996 when I brought this forward in a private meeting with diocesan officials [in La Crosse, Wisconsin], the information I provided was used against me in the form of public defamation, denouncement, libel and slander. Because I came forward, the bishop [Burke] had me jailed for 23 days under false charges, and while I was being held, that same bishop obtained a restraining order forbidding me to speak to him for three years..
**** "In 1998, my confessor, spiritual director, friend and colleague, Rev. Father Alfred J. Kunz, from Dane, Wisconsin, was brutally murdered in his church, just prior to substantiating not only my story, but the scandal itself that is rocking the Catholic Church today.
"In the early fall of 1976, as a young religious, I was brutally gang-raped in the rectory of St. John's Cathedral in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I was lured there under false pretenses by a fellow priest and set up for humiliation and bodily harm.."
Does Fr. St. Anne's story hold water? Not according to the Diocese of La Crosse......
Perhaps the most intriguing unanswered questions have to do with the aforementioned still-unsolved murder of Fr. Alfred Kunz, Scott's alleged spiritual director. (According to Scott, Father Kunz was the one who determined that his ordination was indeed valid.)
In a telephone conversation several months ago, Scott told me he provided to the police all of the names of the priests who had allegedly assaulted him. He also claimed Father Kunz had confronted each of the priests involved in the alleged predatory ring and that none of them denied assaulting Scott.
Scott also gave me the name of an ex-priest whom he claimed had been involved in the ring many years back and who might be willing to talk about the ring's activities.
When I asked, via e-mail, Detective Kevin Hughes of the Dane County Sheriff's Office (who is well aware of Scott), which is investigating the Father Kunz murder, if that ex-priest's name rang a bell, the detective responded, "I cannot answer that.".....'

R.I.P. Fr. Kunz. May the wheels of justice grind exceedingly fine.

I have heard of this story before. Dont know enough to say if its totally valid, but things like this have happened. The victims rarely talk.........or if they do tend to die or disappear.
Bumping in honor of Father Kunz and praying that his murderer(s) will be brought to justice.
The investigators drew the conclusions important to them. They want to catch the murderer, so they conclude that the murderer came from a close circle.
I see the same fact, that the martyr was not fearful of the killer and reach the conclusion important to me, that Father Kuntz was a courageous man. This is what the phrase literally says, and his steadfast defense of the faith provides the corroborative context.
Thanks for the help, Ethan_Allen.

"Bishop Leo" was a real person. And there is a traceable line of succession.
I was just doing some research and and once again was led to one of your prior columns. I've since then bookmarked renewamerica. If you have a ping list, then I would very much appreciate it if you could add me. Thanks!
How absolutely wonderful that Mel got to speak with Sr. Lucia before her passing. I knew he had done much research on Anne Catherine Emmerich who had traveled in the spiritual world but verifying with Sr. Lucia of the message of Fatima is an added bonus in regards to the Passion.
In regards to Emmerich -
1Corinthians 15:44 It is sown a natural body, it shall rise a spiritual body. If there be a natural body, there is also a spiritual body, as it is written.
Biblical Seers or Prophets who are said to have "dreamt" actually travel outside of their body to the spiritual world to see and return. Fascinating subject!
The calf sacrifice happened exactly 24 hours prior to his death. Slice the throat/drain the blood and sacrifice to their god. Some farmers/owners do not even report and those that have just regard it as a ritual of a satanic cult. It happens all over the world. Some extreme elements of a particular religion still believe in this sacrifice. I strongly believe Kunz knew too much...they used the calf and Kunz as an offering. Kunz had his throat sliced as well.
Was Christ offered blood at The Last Supper?
I'm of the mindset that Martin's Windswept House was a dis-information campaign. Is it possible that he could have been misleading Kunz?
I don't have a ping list, sorry. But thanks for the friendly response!
Mel wanted very much to have lots of time with Sister Lucy, but he's lucky he got any at all. They say it took some hundred e-mails back and forth to set it up. We have people here who know Mel, and it's not too hard to get a message to him. But Sister Lucy is another story. The Portugese newspaper finally verified the rumors that everything Sr. Lucy had said for years had been filtered through her superiors and the Vatican. It was a long time ago that her private letters to people, in which she said some very revealing things, were published without Vatican censorship and revisionism.
When I heard that Mel had had a meeting with her, I thought that might be the first of a series over time. Next thing we heard was she passed away. It was a shock. Now there are conflicting stories about Gibson making a movie about Fatima. It could be that he's trying to debunk rumors so that he can keep the pressure off. Remember the hassles he got over the filming of The Passion: they had started their propaganda campaign before there was any film to criticize, using a stolen early draft of the script! He had to threaten to sue them for libel.
What you say about the out-of-body topic is kind of true. But it's also very dangerous, so watch out. I have met people who assured me they have had such experiences, even showing me physical marks on their bodies to prove it. Often times their experience is associated with narcotics. But there are credible warnings from those who know the worst side of religion that the devil uses such experiences to his advantage, if possible. In fact, anyone who has such an experience had better also have a very good priest for a confessor, lest he be deceived.
We ought to listen to St. John of the Cross, who was very familiar with mysticism. He warned the faithful to avoid it at all cost because it is so dangerous.
Martin was a compiler. I don't think of him as being the source of Kunz's information, but that rather Kunz was supplying Martin with information. Kunz had had a long career of handling very sensitive cases, while Martin was busy writing books. Martin had connections, but he was not in the thick of the action. He relied on his connections for new data, and I think that Kunz was such a connection for him, not necessarily for Windswept House, but in general.
What Martin wrote had to be fictionalized so as to protect the identity of his sources. People could get into serious trouble if their giving of info to such as Martin was discovered. People could be killed...like Fr. Kunz was!
