A POPE DESCRIBED AS 'FROM THE SUN' WAS BORN DURING ECLIPSE AND LEAVES WITH ONE

A POPE DESCRIBED AS 'FROM THE SUN' WAS BORN DURING ECLIPSE AND LEAVES WITH ONE

He was born during an eclipse (May 18, 1920) and there will be an eclipse, a rare type of partial eclipse, Friday (April 8) on the day of his burial.

And so now eyes have turned more intently to an old prophecy attributed to the Irish monk St. Malachy O'Morgair -- who supposedly foresaw the entire succession of popes by using riddle-like nicknames, with the one fitting the 110th -- John Paul II -- being De Labore Solis, which means  "from the labor of the sun."

Indeed, John Paul II  was the Pope of Fatima -- where there was the famous "miracle of the sun" -- and reigned during an explosion of other supernatural claims involving solar miracles. Like the sun he came out of the East (Poland). Like the sun he visited countries all around the globe. There was a glow that emanated from him.

Of the sun, yes, and with a stature that means some kind of change of era is coming. This was a giant of a man. This was "Mary's Pope." It was the Pope of her secret. It was as if he was there to prevent or stave off a (long-overdue) chastisement and now he is gone.

The way he died could not have been more dramatic, the "culture of life" Pope dying two days after Terri Schiavo in a benchmark case on the value of life -- she prematurely put to death, in commotion, in terror, he dying with all the dignity with which the old, infirm, and disabled should die.

There was the Pope who had fought for Terri nearing the same end of the road (with even a feeding tube) but in a way that was natural and calm, in a state of prayer, such that he was able to tell his aides he was "happy" and that they too should be happy and then ending his life with Mass, more prayer, and the word, "Amen."

The very way he died was "prophetic." You can't get a much more pointed ending.

And then there is the Divine Mercy saint, St. Faustina, who quoted Christ as foreseeing a "spark" that would come from Poland and herald His "final coming." The Church is extremely and rightly wary when the Second Coming is claimed, but in this case it comes from a saint who was recently canonized -- by John Paul II.

Could it really be a case of approaching such monumental events? If not the Second Coming, a manifestation? Or is there much more yet to play out?

There is St. Faustina and then there was the prophecy of mystic Maria Esperanza -- who in a book foresaw that before a manifestation of Christ and the onset of major purifying events "an innocent person whom He loves a lot will die, an innocent person. This will shock the world, will move the world."

To a growing number of people, that sounds like Theresa Marie Schindler [funeral display, left, or here].

And so the prophetic pulse beats -- rapidly. Eclipses and comets have long been seen by humans as signposts. It was Halley's hanging over Jerusalem that seemed to foretell of the destruction there in the first century (like the sword of Damocles) and there were two eclipses or at least unusual darkness that occurred near Palestine in AD 29 and AD 33 -- events that, for some Christians, give astronomical proof to the biblical account that the sky darkened at Jesus' death on the cross.

In ancient China was the belief that eclipses occurred when the "gods" dispatched a dragon to eat the sun. The word "eclipse" comes from a Greek word, "ekleipsis," which means to "fail or be abandoned" -- and indeed eclipses are often associated with the downfall of kings and other leaders. "The sun has perished out of heaven and an evil mist hovers over all," was Homer's horrified account of an eclipse in The Odyssey.

The one expected Friday as the Pope is buried will be what is known as a "hybrid eclipse," part of a "ballet" in celestial physics (as the press describes it) between the sun, earth and moon. "Friday's event will last three hours and 24 minutes," reported a news service. "It begins at 18:54 GMT southeast of New Zealand, then races eastwards on a line north of the Galapagos Islands, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia and finally Venezuela, where there will be a 33-second annular eclipse at sunset at 22:18. People living in New Zealand and to the north and south of this central line, including most of the southern United States, will see a partial eclipse -- the Sun will appear to have had a "bite" taken out of it. It will be visible on Friday along an arc ranging from the southwestern Pacific to South America, at a time it will already be night in Rome."

The next hybrid eclipse will take place on April 20, 2023. Is there something in that year, or around that time? Was not something around then associated with Medjugirje or mystics such as Josyp Terelya of the Ukraine?

But back to St. Malachy. As one encyclopedia notes: St. Malachy gave his manuscript to Innocent II to console him in the midst of his tribulations, and the document remained unknown in the Roman Archives until its discovery in 1590 (Cucherat, "Proph. de la succession des papes," ch. xv). They were first published by Arnold de Wyon, and ever since there has been much discussion as to whether they are genuine predictions of St. Malachy or forgeries.

"The silence of 400 years on the part of so many learned authors who had written about the popes, and the silence of St. Bernard especially, who wrote the "Life of St. Malachy," is a strong argument, say some, against their authenticity, but it is not conclusive if we adopt Cucherat's theory that they were hidden in the Archives during those 400 years," it notes.

Is there really anything to do? Some say that if it is really St. Malachy's prophecy, there could be the intervention of popes between the next,  De Gloria Olivae ("from the glory of the olive"), and then the last one he allegedly mentioned, Petrus Romanus ("Peter the Roman").

They say he may only have been noting the especially significant pontificates, not every single one.

If not -- if the number he named forms a finite set -- there are only two more popes left, since Malachy saw only 112 of them.

"The statement that the first one occurred in the 12th century is also inaccurate. The statement that the first one occurred in the 12th century is also inaccurate. Again, that only applies to Saros 129."

Yes. That's right. That's what I am talking about. The Saros 129 series. Are you now on the same page as the rest of us?

I see what you are saying. It is an area of speculative theology. The punishment is God's choice. We can't know except through revelation.

The Holy Father did recieve Anointing of the Sick, viaticum, and absolution before he died. Somehow I don't think he'll spend too much time in Purgatory, if any at all. I venture that he is in Mary's arms (or will be very soon).

Now we pray for him. Soon I will ask him to pray for us.

I was googling about St. Malachy this am. I found this on Amy Wellborn's blog. BTW, I doubt the "prophecies" of St. Malachy are reliable.

"The Prophecies of St. Malachy" are a Renaissance fake. It would be fun to write the predictions for popes post-1600 and their names on separate small slips of paper. Draw one from each batch and try to make the prophecy fit the man. That's about what the interpretations of popes post rem amount to. Or how exactly is the scholarly Benedict XIV a "rural animal"? Wake me when it all happens. . . .

Posted by: Sandra Miesel at February 26, 2005 11:06 AM

"Rural animal" definitely is the most hilarious of the Malachy prophecies, except maybe for poor Pius VII being described as a "rapacious eagle." (Ah, say the supporters, but Malachy meant Napoleon, not the Pope himself.)

For an excellent book dealing with prophecy: Trial, Tribulation & Triumph described by Fr. William G. Most as "..a solidly theological work...He utlilizes chielf four solid sources, Catechism, Scripture, Tradition, and majority opinions of the Fathers....All of this Birch does, as we said, in a thouroughly scholarly, theological way. Now there will be no excuse for false notions or denials on the Antrichrist and the other last things. We are and should be extremely grateful to our author for this tremendous resource."

About St. Malachy's prophecies, author Birch notes: As discussed earlier, Nostradamus is also excluded. Similarly, the alleged prophecies of St. Malachy as to a "a list" or index of all the Popes from his day to the end of time have neen excluded."

The author notes, "In the opinion of this author, there is sufficient evidence of major "interpolation" of these prophecies.

This great book should be in every Christian home.

Icon of St. Faustina Kowalska written by Marek Czarnecki of Seraphic Restorations in Avon, Conn.

Through the mediation of St. Faustina Kowalska (1905-38), Jesus has given us a teaching on God's mercy, and a new form of devotion known as the Divine Mercy. The devotion centers on veneration of the image of the merciful Jesus. The image was described by the Lord to Sister Faustina, a Polish nun, and then painted by her. The Divine Mercy devotion includes recitation of the Chaplet of Divine Mercy, celebration of the feast of Divine Mercy the first Sunday after Easter, and keeping holy the hour of Christ’s death.

On Sept. 13, 1935, in Vilnius (now the capital of Lithuania), Jesus "dictated" the words of the Chaplet of Divine Mercy to Sister Faustina. It is important to note that this took place after a vision of an angel, "the executor of Divine wrath," during which the mystic nun, terrified, began to "implore God for the world with words heard interiorly." This was recorded in her diary, Divine Mercy in My Soul (I, 196-197) [Stockbridge, Mass.: Marians of the Immaculate Conception, 2001; subsequent quotes are also from this source]. The next day Christ taught Sister Faustina to pray the chaplet, which she called "the prayer that serves to appease the wrath of God" (I, 197).

Continued prophecies -- for your discernment

For your discernment:

'POPE OF MY SECRET': THE LINK BETWEEN JOHN PAUL II, MERCY, AND COMING EVENTS

Like it or not, the death of Pope John Paul II shows every sign of igniting renewed interest in, even fervor for, the prophetic, and that interest may have grown during his funeral Friday when in a eulogy Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger accented both the Pope's dedication to the Blessed Mother and his focus on Divine Mercy.

"He interpreted for us the paschal mystery as a mystery of Divine Mercy," the cardinal pointed out to history's largest television audience. "In his last book, he wrote: 'The limit imposed upon evil 'is ultimately Divine Mercy' (Memory and Identity, Page 60-61)."

Divine Mercy rings a prophetic bell because it was established as an official feast day of the Church by John Paul II -- who then died on its vigil, April 2, and on the ninth day of the annual Divine Mercy novena.

That feast was originally inspired by St. Faustina Kowalska, a mystic who was from the Pope's native Poland. The first Mass said for the Pope after his death was a Mass of Divine Mercy -- and it was John Paul who canonized St. Faustina.

The connections are clear and the prophetic component comes in with one of St. Faustina's revelations that (quoting Jesus), "I bear a special love for Poland and if she will be obedient to My Will, I will exalt her in might and holiness. From her will come forth the spark that will prepare the world for My final coming" (Diary 1732).

This has dovetailed with the intuition of many who believe that the Pope's passing will signal great changes or even a shift of era in the world, although the Church, especially in the U.S., has been cautious and often reluctant to consider the prophetic component.

As one blogger pointed out, "It has also been noted that not only did John Paul II die on the last day of the Divine Mercy novena and the eve of the feast itself, the traditional nine-day novena-mourning period for the Pope will end on the third Sunday in Easter -- which this year just happens to be the eve of the feast of St. Stanislaus of Krakow, who was a patron saint of Poland, the Pope's predecessor as archbishop of Krakow, and a personal hero of the Pope's." Reportedly, John Paul  even briefly considered taking the Polish saint's name.

And then, there is the Marian devotion. So dedicated was the Pope that an "M" for Mary was placed on his casket, and this too circled into the Faustina revelation. As Cardinal Ratzinger pointed out in his funeral homily Friday, "the Holy Father found the purest reflection of God's mercy in the Mother of God."

Perhaps most direct was a message from Father Stefano Gobbi, an Italian locutionist whose writings have been in wide circulation among priests and Marian laity alike and whose messages, if not deemed as official locutions by the Church (and each to be discerned individually), seem, at least in a number of instances, to have infusions of the inspirational -- as in the one cited above, which correctly foresaw that contents of the third Fatima secret nearly a decade before it was revealed.

That secret cited the shooting of a "bishop in white," which the Vatican said represented the pontiff ("bishop of Rome"), who was shot on May 13, 1981.  The secret was later released by John Paul II -- who believed that the attempt on his life was thwarted by the intervention of the Fatima Virgin and even alluded to this in his last will.

On May 13, 1991, anniversary of the first Fatima apparitions and tenth anniversary of the assassination attempt, Father Gobbi  reported a locution (or "voice"), supposedly from Mary, that said, "You are aware of being spiritually very much united with my Pope, John Paul II, this precious gift which my Immaculate Heart has made to you, who, in these very moments, is in prayer at the Cova da Iria [in Fatima], to thank me for the motherly and extraordinary protection which I gave him, by saving his life, on the occasion of the bloody attempt made upon it, which took place ten years ago in St. Peter's Square.

"Today I confirm for you that this is the Pope of my secret; the Pope about whom I spoke to the children during the apparitions; the Pope of my love and of my sorrow. With great courage and with superhuman strength, he goes about every part of the world, heedless of the fatigue and the many dangers, in order to confirm all in the faith and thus he carries out his apostolic ministry as successor of Peter, Vicar of Christ, universal pastor of the holy Catholic Church, founded on the rock of my Son, Jesus."

That the Pope was not only shot on the Fatima feast day, but also was the Pope who revealed the third secret and who at the same time oversaw the beatification of two of the Fatima seers -- and that his death so closely followed that of the third Fatima visionary, Lucia dos Santos, who died in February -- only adds sinew to arguments that the life of this man was prophetic.

According to Father Gobbi, whose writings have at times ignited controversy (but have circulated to tens of thousands of priests), the Blessed Mother allegedly went on to describe the Pope as giving "the light of Christ in these times of darkness."

"When this Pope will have completed the task which Jesus has entrusted to him and I will come down from Heaven to receive his sacrifice, all of you will be cloaked in a dense darkness of apostasy, which will then become general," she said.

Coming full circle back to prophecies that some link to a manifestation of Christ, or even the Second Coming, the priest asserted that during the same "message," Mary told him that there would be the faithful "remnant" which would find refuge in her heart.

"And it will be this little faithful remnant, prepared and formed by me, that will have the task of receiving Christ, Who will return to you in glory, bringing about in this way the beginning of a new era which awaits you," she allegedly said.

Given my biases, I would have trouble accepting the above on the face of it alone.

Given Bible prophecies and some other prophetic sources I have some respect for saying things somewhat in the ball park, I can readily believe that there's something to it.

I'm not sure I would absolutely 100% totally throw out 100% of the time absolutely everything attached to a Marian something or other. AS was demonstrated in

ETERNITY IN THEIR HEARTS,

God has used all manner of people . . . even shamanistic tribal leaders and we know in The Bible a donkey--to speak prophetically.

It is somewhat conceivable to me that He MIGHT use SOME Marian stuff to speak to those for whom that gestalt facilitated their relationship with Jesus.

In general, I deplore the imposition of any man--or woman--Mary or any other--between God and man. Christ came that we might cry ABBA, DADDY, FATHER.

CHRIST IS OUR ADEQUATE, SUFFICIENT INTERCESSOR.

Dear Catholic Freepers with charitable hearts, please help me with this.

All my life I have had a grave difficulty with the doctrine of hell. It is not doubt (I know that hell exists, and is a "hot possibility" for each and every one of us if we offend God by sin, and especially if we do not forgive those who offend us.) Jesus teaches us this very clearly.

But the grave difficulty is this: if I permit myself to think about hell AT ALL, I am at real risk of losing --- not my faith --- but my hope and charity. It makes me doubt the Fatherhood of God. It makes me question his holy titles, "the Good Lord" and "The Fountain of Mercy" and "the Only Lover of Mankind" (as Eastern Christians call Him.)

I know of ~no~ father who would permit any child of his, however wayward, to be tortured in fire for one minute, let alone for "eternity" --- not if he had the power to stop it. Even if the child were insane enough to keep throwing himself in the fire, a good Father would keep pulling himout--- wouldn't he?

God is Love. Jesus is the Way, ther Truth and the Life. Jesus Himself --- not just this or that mystic --taught the reality and eternity of Hell.

What can the human heart do with this information? I can't bear to think of it. It's like learning that a demon rules the Universe, after all.

Help me, please. Kyrie eleison.

Julian of Norwich had such a concern as you describe when God mystically showed her hell and judgement. But the Lord said to her, "All shall be well and all shall be well and all manner of thing shall be well." And Julian wondered about this and thought it impossible given what she had seen. The Lord told her that for people it was impossible that all should be well, but it was not impossible for Him.

If we walk into the hell of fire, we do so on our own two feet and of our own volition. But the supreme gift of God is his Divine Mercy available to us at such a late moment most of us would have difficulty believing in such a mercy and yet in Jesus Christ it is real. And it is the Father of mercy, the Father of Jesus Christ, His God and Father, who condescends all of this goodness toward us -- even the gift of choosing whom we will serve or not serve and allowing us to embrace our choice finally and ultimately even if it is an ultimate burning separation from Him in the utter darkness of that walk away from Him.

Thank you for reminding me of Lady Julian. She's a good 'un! Very consoling to my heart.

One thing that keeps me going is the prayer given by the angel at Fatima: "O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell. Lead all souls to heaven, especially those most in need of Thy mercy."

There's an un-dissolvable paradox here: the prayer reminds us that hellfire is real; and yet it encourages us to hope that "all souls" might be led to heaven (for how could you pray for something you couldn't hope for? )--- even those "most in need" of God's mercy.

Un-dissolvable here; to be resolved, I believe, in eternity, where EVERY person will acknowledge with astonishment, "God's judgment is exactly right. Exactly, EXACTLY right." Every knee will bend. Every voice will say, "This judgment is astounding. It is absolutely perfect."

I like to envision that.

It restores my hope and charity.

Thank you. Please pray for me.

Julianne

Yes, the Father loves us all deeply -- so deeply that we're called to theosis. As in the Garden of Gethsemane, our will is perfected, not anihilated, when it choses conformity to the Father. Hell is the consequence of God's loving creation of us in his image: with the free will to distort our personal icons, we're fully capable of making a choice against God, and could not be prevented from doing so unless God himself were to debase his creation by short-circuiting our free wills.

Heaven is theosis, not a petting zoo.

This Sabbath is a Machar Chodesh (When Shabbat falls the day before Rosh Chodesh).

I'm sorry, but you're wrong. It is true that most Shabbatot that immediately precede Rosh Chodesh is a Shabbat Machar Chodesh and the haftarah you cited is read. HOWEVER, this past Shabbat preceded Rosh Chodesh Nisan and is known as Shabbat HaChodesh. Because of that a special maftir was read (Exodus 12:1-20) and the haftarah was Ezekiel 45:16-46:18.
