Yah, and whosits who wrote "Pines of Rome"--et al.
Agreed that XXthC. America is a wasteland.
And grade/high school music? Sucked. (SSND's and Jebbies, respectively.)
I pretty much had lay teachers in that regard at CSJ and SSND schools, but most were into the "blend" movement, and lets face it, young voices in the first months of training (in a real conservatory away from school) don't know how to blend. It was awful and my voice would stick out. And instrumental training was either in the few years I was in public schools or privately.
It's just not there and you just can't convince anyone that it isn't.
I believe the Ratzinger report was published in 1985 after he had completed his first term as the Grand Inquisitor. :-)
Don't you just love it when agnostic Anglicans write songs inspired by Hindu godesses? The use of this song by everyone from Unitarians to Catholics is a classic example of willful and pervasive general ignorance in American religious life.
Although within the last year I ran across a charismatic mega-church on TV that was going one better. They were singing, as a "praise and worship" chorus (with a pulsating rock 'n roll band in accompaniment) the refrain from the old Beatles tune: "Come together, right now, over me..."
Gave me the creeps...
Seriously, though, K and Ratzinger are both right that it would take a wee bit longer.
Tell me about the state of affairs for organists in your city. With a German dominated milieu, I would expect that you have good instruments and a pretty good supply of organists -- and maybe a few less ravages of the NO revolution?
Respighi?
Ratzinger observed that rock'n'roll is the antithesis of Christianity (or words to that effect.)
I LOVE telling my kids' grade school teachers that factoid; one of them is a mind-numbed "Christian" rock dipso (who also doesn't understand momentum in elementary physics...)
It's mediocre.
The demand slightly exceeds the supply but no one is able to make a serious living (say $50K plus bennies) as a church musician in the RC churches.
As a result, part-timers are exceedingly expensive--it's about $150.00 for simply accompanying 4 hymns during a Mass.
There are a number of fine piped instruments in the area; needless to say, they attract good organists almost regardless of compensation.
But the number of piped instruments is decreasing, slowly, and the really big money is in the non-denominational "Christian" church-of-FeelGood-places. They are also, by far, the largest 'worship' buildings in the metro area.
Yes, thanks.
His "Church Windows" includes the Gloria from Mass VIII (de Angelis) as the main theme. Not particularly great, but certainly 'good' music.
" Make that a Margarita for me, and I'll be happy. :)"
We will be pleased to make allowances for your youth!
"... it seemed everyone in the restaurant was holding an old-fashioned and a cigarette - both in the same hand."
Now that's the way to spend an evening!
Ah, civilization... where have you gone...?
Seriously, I'm glad not to have cigarette smoke in my restaurants these days while I'm eating, but I must admit that some of my most enjoyable smokes in my young and wild days were over animated and wide-ranging conversations after a fine restaurant meal.
What's the name of that joint in St. Louis? I think I'd have a BALL there!
Regards,
Now that's the way to spend an evening!
Don't forget the cheesecake or chocolate cream pie, and the apertif of B&B.
Don't know as I need the cheese cake, but the B&B and a Cohiba, well that would be nice. We could sit around and wonder what the poor people are doing! :)
About two of those dinners and we wouldn't have to wonder.
But if we managed to achieve East/West unity, we could spend the rest of our lives on the lecture circuit, all expenses...
