Pope Benedict XVI waves from the window of his papal apartment in his first Sunday noon appearance at the Vatican May 1, 2005. Pope Benedict appealed for peace in Togo, telling a cheering crowd of more than 40,000 in St Peter's Square that the late Pope John Paul was 'closer than ever.' In what was a welcome return to a much-loved weekly papal tradition, Benedict called for an end to fighting in Togo which has been shaken by days of deadly rioting following a disputed election. People wait for Pope Benedict XVI to make the first appearance of his papacy from the window of his apartment overlooking St. Peter's Square at the Vatican, for the Sunday Angelus prayer, Sunday May 1, 2005. In his address, the pontiff told tens of thousands of faithful and curious he was keeping up the cherished tradition of his beloved predecessor, John Paul II, who had last appeared to crowds in St. Peter's Square in silent suffering. With some 50,000 people gathered in the square below, Benedict stood at the window of the papal apartment, which he moved into on Saturday, blessed the crowd, wished Orthodox Christians a happy Easter and said he hoped efforts toward Christian unity would continue.(AP Photo/Plinio Lepri)

Excellent-excellent photos!
Thank you.
Ah...the Pope looks as good as ever.
Thank you again.
When do we find out who the new heads of the CDF and PBC are?
Thanks, as always, for the great pictures and your work in putting them together.
He's talking things over with a friend. :)
Yes, I truly believe that. They are soul mates.
Those tears of mine... flowing again.
Peace be with you dear FRiend.

And business shall be done. Its about time this great Pope stand up against relativism and other humanistic theology which destroys essence of Christianity and unity with God. I'm not as religious as my wife, however I want church the way it used to be; simple and humble and straight forward. I especially want to see this Pope reign on those who have defile their priesthood and desecrated Most Holy God body and blood; I want this Pope to reign on those who say they are Catholics but approve abortion, homosexuality and other deprivations that makes church weak.
On behalf of Sara my wife Thank you
Wonderful pictures. Thank you very much! My only complaint is the reference to the "German Pope". He is German-born, but he is the Pope of all the RC church. I suppose that is how it was printed in the original source. They ought to be more accurate.
I'm very encouraged by the threads posted here that Benedict XVI will likely move to clean up the Augean stables of American seminaries. I think he even used the word "filth" (while he was still a cardinal) in referring to the sex scandal that has so devastated the Church here. Godspeed to Pope Benedict XVI.
Great pics!
There is a short video clip of Benedict XVI praying at JPII's tomb ans St. Peter's tomb over at Yahoo! News.
OK, thanks ELS, I'll go have a look right now.
I've read that Pope Benedict has never had a drivers license in his life.
Hot diggity!!!! Pope photos, thanks for the ping a ling!!!
Is it me , or does it look like Holy Father is completely comfortable in His role as Pontiff? :-D

Well, he was very close to Pope John Paul II, so in the secular sense, he has the "edge" of more or less knowing what his duties are, what his role will be.
And as we've seen in the pics, he also has the ultimate Spiritual Advisor.
Pope Benedict XVI will do just fine.
Oh my goodness. I forgot all about yesterday being a month since he died.
It has been a tumultuous month. It's like we've lived through a lifetime in the short 30 days.
Wonderful pictures. Thank you very much! My only complaint is the reference to the "German Pope". He is German-born, but he is the Pope of all the RC church. I suppose that is how it was printed in the original source. They ought to be more accurate.

Reuters appears to be the main source, but Reuters also gets its information from other sources, often some of which are in a language other than English. Could be that Reuters' original source lost something in the translation.
And if the source was German, well, having a German Pontiff is still a major source of pride in his native land. I would forgive the Germans for blowing their own horn...at least for now. :)
I agree, and "tumultuous" is the word for this past April.
A month filled with upsets, profound saddness, and then finally the joy of Pope Benedict XVI.

Dittos to you and Sara .. God Bless You Both -- from Starwise, 100% Polish!!
If you didn't get a chance to read it today, there is a wonderful essay on Truth and Beauty by the Pope written while he was still a cardinal.
Oh, and I just heard on Fox that the President is going to visit the Pope, and that Pope Benedict will be here in late June!
So wonderful to see. Thanks for taking this on, Pyro.
PLEASE get a digital camera and take pictures, and be sure and post a detailed account! Lots of us won't get the opportunity for such a wonderful experience, and we would really appreciate your account!
heard that one about the pope who wanted to switch places with the chauffeur? He visits a city where there are....political favors. But the pope wants just a brief chance behind the wheel. So he and the chauffeur switch places. He commits a minor traffic violation and gets pulled over by a cop. The cop sees that the pope is driving. So he calls headquarters.
"Hey, I've got a big one," he tells the chief.
"Is it the mayor?" asks the chief.
"Higher than that." says the cop.
"The governor, then?"
"No, higher than that."
"The president, then."
"Hmmmm....."
"Who is it, then?" asks the chief.
"I'm not sure," says the cop, "but the pope is his chauffeur."
I'm sorry. Y'all have probably heard it a million times, and someone else has probably posted it too. I couldn't resist.
He's coming HERE to the states? Did they say whether he would be here to say Mass for the faithful, etc. or just meet with the President privately?
Wonderful, wonderful pictures. Thanks for all your hard work!
I am pretty certain that there is an official photographer and that those who have audiences with the Pope can get pictures from him. (I knew a priest who met with JPII and had some pictures that were taken by the photographer.)
Thanks-Thank you
